1992 Ferrari 512TR

Following on the heels of the Testarossa we featured yesterday, here's a low mileage example of its successor, the 512TR. Essentially a facelift of the original Testarossa, Pininfarina's styling tweaks brought the looks in line with the newly released 348. Along with a revised interior layout, improvements were made with regards to weight distribution and the gearbox, which featured a new single plate clutch. This 512TR for sale in Connecticut in Fly Yellow certainly isn't for your shrinking violets out there.

Style / Body: Coupe 2D
Engine: 4.9L 12 Cyl Unleaded Gas

Values for 512TRs don't vary much from the original Testarossa. The 512TR had an MSRP of just over $200,000 when it was new and the prices we see today on these twelve cylinder brutes is about as low as they have ever been. For a mint, low mileage example such as this, we could be looking at between $65,000 to $90,000. The 512's smoother details has always made this my favorite of the Testarossa bunch, however, the yellow, well, it probably wouldn't be my first choice. Still, this is an arresting looking machine twenty years on.

1988 Ferrari Testarossa

The Ferrari Testarossa is one of our favorites here at CICFS and currently, they have become more affordable than ever, no doubt as a result of a lagging economy and the fact that they fall into that modern classic category where bargains can be had. I was watching What’s My Car Worth on the Velocity Channel the other night and a 1991 Testarossa in average condition sold for $45,000. This example for sale in Las Vegas is three years older than the car featured on that show and wears the unusual shade of Oro Chiaro Metallizato (light metallic beige).

This very preserved original one owner Testarossa features a vary rare gold/pewter color. The car is all original, however we discovered the original audio unit in the car was not working so we replaced it with a modern unit. The original one comes with the car. The car has a 5-speed with very low Only 3539 miles it has been very well maintained and all open recalls have been preformed. The car appears to be mechanically sound with clutch & brakes in good working order with no major probelms found. We have noted that the power passenger window goes up and down slower than the driver's window. Also the drivers seat does show some wear and the exterior shows very well. The car also includes Ferrari tools, books, and a car cover.

This Testarossa is an interesting specimen. Sure, it has been used sparingly, but a lot of people will be put off by a color more suited for a Toyota Camry, no matter how rare the hue may be. That being said, $75,000 is probably optimistic, as there are a lot of low mileage Testarossas on the market. We are probably looking at a $60,000 car at best. It's always nice to see the rare colors come about for sale, but honestly, traditional Rosso Corsa is where it's at with these sports cars.

1986 Ferrari Testarossa

Scouring through the ads and auctions every week, I come across many cars that are described as being the best. While there's been some undoubtedly clean examples of all types of Italian iron on CICFS, I think it's going to be hard to find a better Ferrari Testarossa than this one brought to our attention by it's owner, Rick. A 1986 example, this car has racked up numerous awards at prominent Italian car shows and is being offered for sale at auction next month in Monterey, California. Among the many awards this car has won, it secured "Best Ferrari" at Concorso Italiano in 2011. A rather impressive achievement by an equally impressive '80s icon.

Launched at the 1984 Paris show, the Testarossa was aimed directly at the American market as a GT with the ability to gobble up long stretches of pavement with amazing aplomb. The car was immediately praised by the automotive press as Ferrari's best road car to date and one that was far more stylish than the Boxer it replaced. In the early years, the Testarossa was so popular that buyer frenzy fueled additional dealer markups, which peaked at about $150,000.

With its over-the-top straked sides and the "flying mirror", the early Testarossa became an icon of the 1980's. Power for this "Red Head" came from its 4.9 liter mid-engined Flat-12 which developed 390 HP and made it the fastest regular production car in the world in 1986. The Testarossa is a perpetually desirable sports car with an unmistakable design that still stops traffic and turns heads more than 25 years later.

On offer is the 1986 Testarossa, S/N 64537, which is arguably the best example in existence – evidenced by the awards it garnered in 2011.

- RUNNER-UP, "Best in Show"

"Best Ferrari" - let that sink in for a moment. Concorso Italiano is one of the most important Italian exotic car shows in the world. There were literally hundreds of Ferraris competing including the "halo cars" (288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo), Daytonas, Dinos, etc. All of them were asked to bow and curtsey to the mighty Testarossa on that day in August of 2011.

But the awards don't stop there. This Testarossa is undefeated on the car show circuit.

This Testarossa wears Nero Metallizato (901/C) on the outside – a very rare factory color. The interior features a black dash, cream colored Connolly leather and brown carpets. This color combination is quite possibly the most attractive you will ever see on a Testarossa. Originally delivered in August 1986 to a gentleman in Seattle, WA, it quickly traded hands and has been a California car ever since (25+ years). When the car was acquired by the current owner in late 2010, it had not been driven in nearly 15 years. Unwilling to take any chances, the owner had it rolled off the trailer and straight onto the lift for a full engine out service to the tune of $12k (completed in January 2011). Since that time, it was lovingly run-in past the 3,000 mile mark (per original specifications) and subsequently driven up the coast of California to collect a trunkful of awards at Concorso Italiano.

Built in late 1986, this Testarossa is equipped with 16 inch single lug Speedline wheels. The car is as it left the factory with no modifications or after-market parts; a true time capsule with all tools, books, keys, service history, original sticker, spare wheel and accessories. The full 6 piece set of tan Schedoni luggage ordered from the factory by the owner in 1987 (complete with receipt) is also included. There is something truly magical about a 12 cylinder, mid-engined Ferrari. Your piece of perfection awaits.

After speaking with Rick, it's apparent that he's rather proud of this motor. He had also pointed out that a 1990 Testarossa with 900 miles had just sold at Mecum Auto Auctions in May for $101,000. That car would most certainly need an engine out service that has already been completed on our feature car as of last year. Along with the provenance, awards and condition, if the right people are in the room, I can see this car possibly bringing six figures. Even though most clean Testarossas are bringing between $55,000 and $70,000 these days, this car presents very well and is no doubt a known vehicle in Ferrari circles due to the amount of awards in its corner.

Theme Week: A Tribute to Sergio Pininfarina: 1987 Ferrari Testarossa

A high point in Sergio Pininfarina's career was the Ferrari Testarossa, introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1984. The car was a replacement for the Berlinetta Boxer and its name stood for red head in Italian, a reference to the car's red cam covers and a tribute to the Testa Rossa GT cars of the late 1950s and early 1960s. One of the most instantly recognizable Ferraris of all time, the trademark side strakes feeding the radiators and wide rear section made a dramatic styling statement in an era where such brash aesthetics were welcomed. This car is for sale in California and underwent a major service in early 2008.

1987 Ferrari Testarossa, VIN: ZFFSG17A1H0069267, Rosso Corsa with Tan Leather

Upon its introduction in late 1984, the Testarossa stunned the world with its avant garde styling. Long low and wide, the Testarossa appeared even more so thanks to the extensive use of horizontal slatting, a feature that would be replicated both on other Ferraris and on many other lesser cars. Yet beneath these striking features was a surprisingly organic and handsome form that remains as arresting today as it was twenty years ago. Motivated by a new four valve version of Ferrari`s horizontally opposed twelve cylinder engine that made 390hp, the car was quick and made fantastic noises, but was also very plush with leather almost everywhere, including on the rear shelf, headliner, and visors. The trunk is reasonably sized and the car very comfortable and easy to drive, making it an ideal way to cover long distances at high speeds in comfort. Many Testarossa owners use them regularly and there are many owners with cars having covered over 125,000 miles, and even an example with over 200,000 miles!

This particular car has covered just 25,000 miles, and was sold new in California. In the hands of the present owner since 1992, it has enjoyed a single ownership period for nearly its entire life. In January of 2008, at 24,464 (just 1,100 miles ago), a major engine-out belt service was completed by Alfamilano Inc in Los Angeles, California, which totaled $8,610.90 including the replacement of the hood struts, recharging the air conditioning system, and replacing the shifter cover seal to the transaxle. It is current on its service at this time.

The car is in good mechanical order, and runs and drives well. Cosmetically, it is best described as a nice driver, as there are a handful of minor paint and body blemishes about the car, typical of 25 year old automobiles. The interior is very nice, benefiting from the car’s low mileage. The dash exhibits minimal shrinkage, which is common to Ferrari of this era. The front carpets have been replaced with lambs wool overlays. Both the carpeted front storage area, and the engine bay, are in beautiful condition. This car sits on factory wheels, which are in good condition. Included with the sale are the books, tools, jack, bulb set, and records for the Alfamilano Inc. major service.

This is a great opportunity to acquire one of these very neat and important cars. Their astonishing styling still carries tremendous impact, and they are modern, practical, and easy enough to drive to use on a regular basis. This car has been in California for most of its life and represents a great way to enjoy the Ferrari experience as often as possible for the new owner. Moreover, with values of these cars stabilized and are beginning to go up, lower mileage examples such as this one can be a rationally appealing proposition as well.

An average Testarossa of this vintage will usually bring around $55,000 to $60,000, with the best examples glancing the $70,000 mark. Given that one owner possessed this car for about 20 years, this would be a good car to buy. Even though it hasn't covered many miles since the service, time is not kind to any machine of this caliber. A service could be lurking in another few years, the price of which should be factored in to the purchase price.

1988 Ferrari Testarossa

The Ferrari Testarossa is one of those cars that needs no introduction. Instantly recognizable even to those who aren’t car enthusiasts, this was a car that defined a generation in the 1980s and whose moxy still reverberates in the automotive world to this day. This example for sale in Massachusetts has but 5,600 miles on the clock, is in very original condition and comes with all records and receipts.

What we have here is a near perfect 1988 Ferrari Testarossa with 5,600 miles on the odometer. The car is finished in a beautiful factory Bronze Metallic with a full tan leather interior. This car has to be seen to be appreciated. This 1988 Ferrari Testarossa comes with AC, PW, PB, PL, PS and has the original radio that is non-functional; I've often wondered who listens to the radio when driving a Ferrari! We have service records and history for the car and would love to discuss any aspect of this beautiful machine with anyone who has questions. This car's color combination makes this Ferrari special. I've seen more red and yellow Ferraris in my life-time than I ever needed to see but the subtlety of this metallic bronze with the tan interior is both stunning and sophisticated; a true winner.

Even by Ferrari standards, this is very low mileage for an example of one of the brashest supercars to emerge from the 1980s. The very best Testarossas of this vintage may bring anywhere between $60,000 to $70,000. The shade of bronze on this example could be a deciding factor on this car’s final value. Some may love it, others, well, it may not be loud enough. I actually like it. I think subtle colors really show off the Testarossa’s flamboyant lines quite well.

1993 Ferrari 512TR

Even though the basic design lived on until 1996, the Ferrari Testarossa was an icon of the 1980s and remains one of the most recognizable Ferraris to date. In 1991, the original Testarossa underwent a facelift, and was reintroduced as the 512TR. The subtle styling tweaks and updated wheels lent a bit of refinement to this 12 cylinder brute, but kept the trademark side strakes. This bright yellow example for sale in Texas is an almost new example with an impossibly low 4,300 miles on the clock.

Bid with full confidence, This is a SPECTACULAR part of automotive history that has been stored in an air conditioned building and detailed weekly. No expense was spared in the care and maintaining this beautiful Ferrari.

There are two things on this car I'm not a fan of. First is the single stripe down the center of the body. This Pininfarina design is one which does not lend itself well to any kind of alteration whatsoever. Second, this was an era where Ferraris had the motorized seatbelts, as airbags would appear shortly after this 512TR was built. At almost $120,000, this is very pricey for any sort of Testarossa, even considering the mileage. Most Testarossas and 512TRs these days are hovering around $60,000 to $90,000.

1994 Ferrari 512TR

Having grown up in the 1980s, I can state unequivocally that, along with the Lamborghini Countach and Mercedes 560SL, the Ferrari Testarossa was one of those cars that displayed to the world that you were someone. Its popularity amongst the connoisseurs and the wealthy alike is evidenced by its 12 year production run resulting in almost 10,000 units manufactured. An evolution of the Ferrari 512i BB, the BB short for Berlinetta Boxer, the Testarossa improved upon the formula, adding space, comfort and power from the horizontally opposed 12 cylinder engine.

The car received a facelift in 1991 and a name change, to 512TR. Once again, power was increased from 390 to 428 horsepower, a new Bosch engine management system was employed and the front and rear fascias were updated to bring the styling in line with the newly released 348. The final iteration of the Testarossa appeared in 1994 as the F512 M, but this car was a more awkward than its predecessors, with its exposed headlights, fussy wheels and incongruous rear tail lights. The 512TR, for me, was the ultimate expression of the Testarossa. It improved upon the original yet kept much of its character intact. Like most Ferraris, I’ve mainly seen these models in shades or red, black or yellow. Occasionally you see a color outside of the normal Ferrari spectrum, such as this 512TR in Aubergine for sale in Belgium.

1994 Ferrari 512TR

Very well maintained 512 TR, Color: Aubergine with tobacco interior, alarm, power locking, cambelts changed at 88.443 km (03/2007). Very good condition!

I have never seen this color on a 512TR before, or any other Ferrari that I can remember. While it is a tad effeminate, I think this dark hue works great with the lines of the car. It gives it a rich, bespoke look befitting such an awesome machine. At €52,000 (~ $67,500 USD) it is about in line with current Testarossa prices, however, the mileage is a tad bit higher than you usually see. Still, it looks as if it was well cared for throughout its life and the cambelt service is a welcome relief. While this is a 1994 model and not eligible for importation to the United States for another seven years, it would be a nice buy for someone on The Continent seeking a uniquely colored Ferrari.
