1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

Rivaling the Porsche 911 and Volkswagen Beetle for one of the longest production runs, the Alfa Romeo Spider went through a host of changes (as did the 911 and Beetle) over its nearly 30 years in production; from the classic and simple "Graduate" Duetto until the last of the run in 1993, the Spider was a classic pillar of Italian design, an underscore to the notion that Italian roadsters were front engine, rear drive cars with a manual gearbox - something that would disappear from Alfa Romeos until the 8C very recently. What better way to celebrate in that idea than to look at the last of the run Series 4 Spider, on offer from Ocean Drive Motors:

THE INTERIOR IS ALL ORIGINAL AND IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. THE TOP IS ALSO ORIGINAL AND IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITION. NEW KONI FRONT SHOCKS, REAR MUFFLER, TIE RODS AND BALL JOINTS RECENTLY REPLACED.

Of all of the Spiders, I like the original Duettos and the last of the run Spider Veloces the best. Sure, the body cladding isn't as clean as the original design, but the car looked updated and really showed how good that original design could still look in the 1990s. To me, it was the same way that the 1980s Porsche 911 Carrera channeled the cleaner original design. With modern conveniences like electric windows and air conditioning, the Spider was also updated to make it a more enjoyable car to drive when the weather was less than optimal. The Veloce was the top of the line model, with leather seating, a cloth top and 15" alloy wheels. This is one of the lower mile examples we've seen; I love the white over tan leather as a classic Alfa combination, and recent maintenance means there should be less for the new owner to do except drop the top and enjoy some classic Italian roadster smiles with a touch of modernity.

Double Take: 1980 and 1982 Lancia Beta Zagatos

With the sun finally creeping out from behind the clouds and the last throws of winter grumpily making way for spring flowers, it's nice to think about an affordable Italian roadster. Sure, the Ferrari 550 Barchetta is a great option if you own some oil fields in the Near East, but for most of us the budget will be a bit more modest. One of the more interesting options that would really set you apart would be to look at the Lancia Beta Zagato; if for no other reason than not many remain. Quick depreciation, spotty reliability and rust-prone panels mean these have become a rare sight in the U.S. However, two have popped up on Ebay that are near twins, though being born two years apart. Let's look at the elder first:

Holy mackerel, it's got the original tires on it! What an impressive condition example; it certainly looks nearly good enough to have rolled off the showroom floor and displays none of the normal wear and tear that is associated with these budget convertibles. With under 40,000 miles on the clock and being a California car, the concerns about what's underneath that polished facade are put at ease. What about the second example?

This 1982 also looks pretty stellar, sporting a different grill setup but otherwise nearly the twin of the earlier model. Condition also looks outstanding on this example overall, though unlike the earlier car it appears this car was resprayed at some point:

I have a very nice Lancia Zagato up for sale. This fun little Italian sports car reads only 66000 orig miles and runs and drives great with its peppy 4 cyl engine and 5 speed transmission,it's a joy to drive. The Targa and convertible top have been redone a few years back and look and work great. The paint on the car looks to have been redone at some point but not recent, it shines nice but not perfect. Bumpers and glass are near mint cond. the interior of the car is in very nice cond. no dash cracks, clean carpet, nice seats some seem separation on driver seat only .The engine is clean and runs smooth, the wheels are in nice cond tires should be replaced from lack of use. I have all books, manuals and some service records with the car. Please call or email with any questions. Thank You 1 603 387 1693

So it's a little less than perfect; I have no problem with that, although life in New Hampshire for a Lancia would give me a bit of concern. In this case, I'd spend a little extra to get the all-original California example. Hagerty lists top value of these cars around $12,000 and I'd expect the 1980 is heading that way; the 1982, while nice, probably is closer to half that value or slightly more, but I'd inspect it closely underneath before buying.

1966 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider

A few weeks back, I looked at a 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider, one of the prettier and more Ferrari-like designs to come out of Milan. Decidedly un-Ferrari-like is the price of these vintage Alfas, which despite their elegant Touring-designed coachwork don't generally come within even a tenth of the value of most of the mid 1960s Ferrari crowd these days. For that money, you're decidedly getting one of the better looking and lesser known Italian roadsters ever produced. Today, there is a near mirror-copy of the earlier 1963 model for sale on Ebay; this time, it's a 1966 but nearly everything else is the same!

1966 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider

Chassis No. AR192999
Engine No. AR00601 07437

Rare DOHC Six-Cylinder 1960's Italian Spider
Verified by Alfa Romeo Automobilismo Storico Centro Documentazione
A Late Production Example with 5-Speed Gearbox and Disc Brakes
One of Just 2,255 Examples Produced from 1961-1968, Representing Classic Styling with Strong Performance
Recent Major Mechanical Servicing
Incredibly Well-Mannered Driver - Great for Tours & Rallies

Specs: 145hp, 2584cc. dual overhead cam inline six-cylinder engine, three Solex 44PHH carburetors, five-speed manual transmission, independent front and rigid rear axle with coil springs suspension, front disc and rear drum brakes.

As Alfa's all-new flagship line, the 2600 marked the end of the Italian company's long-standing tradition of producing four-cylinder cars. Offered as a Spider, four-door Berlina, or a two-door Sprint, the 2600 was available to customers in three very distinctive body styles. The all-alloy 2.6 liter inline six-cylinder engine, like its predecessors, made use of dual-overhead camshafts. Less than 2,300 2600 Spiders were ever produced.

Presented here is a highly coveted late production example featuring 5spd manual transmission and disc brakes all around. As driver's quality Spider, this car displays older cosmetics, with recently serviced mechanicals making it the perfect candidate for spirited driving.

Exhibiting a nice patina throughout with typical blemishing and imperfections on the paint (pictured), it appears this 2600 remains largely correct in Red paintwork over a Black cabin and convertible top. The majority of brightwork and all side-glass are untouched as is the dash and several underlying components. The car's numbers-matching alloy 2.6 liter twin-cam, with its freshly rebuilt triple Solex carbs is incredibly well mannered and very responsive. A recent complete tune-up also addressed new rubbers, cooling and intake hoses, clamps, spark plugs, fluids, clutch and brake master + slave cylinders, brake lines and rebuilt calipers, battery, ignition components and more. Its broad torque band and the 2600's inherently balanced characteristics easily tackle the most challenging roads.

Great for tours, rallies and continued use as-is, the Spider is accompanied by a vintage 2600 Shop Manual, 2600 Tech manual, servicing receipts and catalog.

While condition on this car looks close to the earlier example, pricing is significantly less at $30,000 less than the earlier car. For that money, you also get a few less miles than the earlier example. While this car exhibits more patina than the 1963, personally I'd accept that for the hefty discount and to be comfortable taking it for a drive. After all, what use is the car if you can get out and enjoy it? This is a lovely car and a neat (and affordable) alternative to the Ferrari crowd!

1995 Ferrari F355 Spider

Last week or so, I wrote up a Ferrari 512TR and said it was the best looking of the bunch. Well, the car that redesign language inspired was the successor to the similarly mini-Testarossa 348; the F355. With a streamlined design, the subtle change from angles to curves, some new great wheels and that singing 3.5 liter V8 in the middle, the 355 was an instant success. Unlike the many generations of mid-engined V8s that it replaced, it went as fast as it looked, too - with 375 horsepower on tap from the new 5 valve V8, this car was a screamer. 1995 was the first year of the Spider variant, which really took the great looks of several generations of Pininfarina design to the sun. Today, there's a lovely example available in British Racing Green - not generally a color associated with Ferrari, but certainly a color we associate with roadsters:

Condition wise, this car is pretty much immaculate; it's a lovely combination of green and tan, the wheels are perfect and with only 7,000 miles on the odometer it's hard to believe this is a 20 year old car! As bonus items, this car has had the 30K service already and has Tubi exhaust fitted, which really makes the V8 sing. For some time, the value of these F355s has been sinking but appears to be stabilizing; for the first time in 5 years, Hagerty indicated over the past few months that prices have been heading up. Still, many sellers are optimistic; Hagerty places that top value around $46,000 making this car fairly overpriced on the books. But if you're in the market and find the F355 that you want, book value probably won't factor in - you're buying a special car, so get the one that you want and can afford.

1960 Fiat 1200 Cabriolet

To own an Italian two-seater convertible, you have to be rich, right? Not exactly. Look back to the classics and there are a wealth or drop top runabouts to choose from. One of my favorites happens to be based on Fiat's small family car, the 1200. With Pininfarina employed as the stylist, a tidy looking convertible emerged on the scene in 1959 and laid the groundwork for the classic Italian roadster look. More than a few future Fiats and Alfa Romeos took styling cues from this car. This particular 1200 Cabriolet for sale, which has been restored, comes to us from our reader Frank in Denmark.

Year: 1960
Model: 1200 Cabriolet
Engine: 1.2 liter inline-4
Transmission: 4-speed manual
Mileage: 7,000 km since restoration (~ 4,349 mi)
Price: £14,900 (~ $24,747 USD)

CLICK FOR DETAILS:1960 Fiat 1200 Cabriolet

This Fiat 1200 Spider have been totally restored in 1992, and since then it has only been driving 7,000 km. The engine have gone through a complete recondition with new piston and bearings, new bearings in gearbox, new radiator etc. The hood and all of the interior have been replaced with new. This car has only been outdoor driving in the summer, and always stored indoor in a garage. In general, this car is in outstanding condition!

The warmer months are about to begin here on the East Coast of the US and in continental Europe, so a sorted 1200 Cabriolet such as this would avert and down time and allow a prospective buyer to jump right in and cruise down to the coast.

1971 Fiat 124 Spider

There's something that's timeless about the small Italian spider, and while the default is to usually consider the Alfa-Romeo as the go-to spider, in reality there were several great offerings - many of which still pepper the market. This 1971 Fiat Spider is no exception; with the cleaner early body style, simple steel wheels with covers and looking splendid in orange over black, this is a unique expression of Italian motoring:

1971 Fiat spider sport 124 fiat red on black - best combination I think car looks and drives like the day it came off assembly line everything look great including to the engine bay own by same collector for decades always stored inside never driven in elements car was repainted its original color years back all trim was removed polished and reassembled no rust or road corosion upon removale of trim when painting

I love the simplicity of the earlier 124 Spider; while the later Fiat Spiders may have gained power, hood bulges and wider tires, to me the early model looks great. There is a touch of MGB but also Ferrari in the design; while that sounds a bit crazy the combination somehow works and really looks special. While prices have generally been on the rise for these models over the past few years, they're still quite cheap compared to what a similar Mercedes-Benz SL would bring; expect this reserve for this car to be priced in the mid-teens. Sure, that buys you a much more reliable Miata; but then, if you wanted a Miata you wouldn't be reading this, would you?

1967 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto

When you think of the quintessential Italian roadster, more than likely one car comes to mind: the Alfa Romeo Spider. Fortunately, there four generations of the 105/115 Series Spider to choose from that span four decades. So whether you want a classic or something with a bit more modern convenience, there is certainly a Spider model for you. This early Spider Duetto for sale in the Greater Toronto Area is similar to the one Dustin Hoffman made famous in "The Graduate," right down to the color.

There must have been something in the air in 1967, because it seems that the whole world changed overnight. It was everywhere; in music, theater, social mores, political unrest, technology and, of course, automobiles. The height of the muscle car era was in swing and the Summer of Love was soon to start. Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo introduced its spectacular Duetto Spider and it was noticed by everyone who followed automobile design.
The car features a sharp, razor-like nose, glass-covered headlights, a classic scallop running down the side and a boat-like taper at the rear. It looked sleek, sexy and Italian in every way. Interiors were pure sports car, but luxurious enough to keep the driver comfortable during longer trips. Instrumentation was excellent and the overall feel of the car superb. Driving it was pure fun due to its nimbleness and ease of control.

This beautiful 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto has been restored from the previous owner in which includes several upgrades. One of the major upgrades done was the braking, which was originally a boost ATE system. The Alfa itself is equipped with an upgraded 2000cc Engine and a fully rebuilt fuel injection system in which was professionally done by WES. The suspension has all new vinyl bushings and the exhaust system is virtually brand new.

Duettos are some of the most valuable of the 105/115 Series Spiders, and this example is no exception. The aftermarket alloy wheels may not be to everyone's taste, but I've seen Minilite style rims on Spiders before and I find the look to be rather fetching. The asking price here is right on the money, considering good Duettos are now reaching well into the $30,000 territory. At this price, you'll be getting not only a style icon but a classic that you can use without guilt.

1987 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio as seen in “The Wolf of Wall Street”

What is the price of celebrity? Always an interesting question when it comes to collector vehicles. By now we’ve either seen or read the reviews of “The Wolf of Wall Street,” a take by famed director Martin Scorsese on the fast times of the world of high finance in the 1980s. If you were watching closely, you might have spotted a classic sports car from the 1980s make an appearance in the opening scenes. While the easy choice might have been a Porsche 911 or Mercedes-Benz SL, the director decided to go for a more Mediterranean choice in this, the Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio. This particular Series 3 Spider is a two owner car with just over 80,000 miles on the clock.

If this were any normal Series 3 Spider, we’d be looking at a $10,000 to $15,000 car here, given the condition. Is star power worth more than double in this case, then? That’s debatable, given this isn’t the first time this car has appeared in an online auction. It certainly would be interesting to see where this would go with no reserve. Given this car appeared in a movie regarding the investment world, maybe it's worth taking a risk over the normal value for a slice of movie history?

The Series 3 wasn't the most desirable of the Spider lot, but such an original, low mileage example like this will bring strong money. This car has a reserve, and if I had to estimate, it's probably somewhere in the $12,000 to $15,000 territory. There are cheaper Spiders out there that could feasibly be used on a regular basis, but for those seeking the best, this particular car would be a good place to start.

The Series 4 Spider and early Duettos are my favorite Spiders, but this Series 3 certainly catches my eye. Anywhere in the $10,000 to $14,000 range should be about the order of the day for a Spider in this condition with this kind of mileage.
