We are glad that FCA, or Stellantis, as they are known these days, is able to root around the Ferrari parts bin every once in a while. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is a prime example of technology sharing between the brands; Considering Alfa's sales volume in its market segment, can we really expect them to develop an entire engine on their own anymore? Today's 1985 Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole Cabriolet doesn't lend any technology to the FCA offerings, but it does offer a rare and wonderful color combination of plum over tan. And where do you think we've seen that today? Why, on the Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye, of all things!
We've never loved the Mondial Cabriolets until seeing this one in plum or prugna. The photographs here really capture the low-slung shape, only possible with a double wishbone suspension front and rear, well. Being a Quattrovalvole model, this Mondial actually makes respectable power, with a 235bhp rating from its 4-valve per cylinder F105A V8. Fuel injection comes courtesy of a Bosch K-jet, or CIS, system, which controls fueling entirely electromechanically. Sensitive to rusty fuel tanks, the systems are robust, if not exactly optimized. And, in our experience, they somehow lend to a great exhaust note with hints of overrun on decelerations.
The odometer on this black Ferrari Mondial T, featured here in February of last year, hasn't moved a single click in the span of 15 months since its first listing. Conversely, the price has softened by 8%. Our attraction to this example? Steadfast, if not even stronger.
The Mondial can seem like a compromised 308 or 328, when in reality it is more fairly compared to something like the 964 generation of Porsche 911, which came to market in the 1989 model year. Both are high-end sports coupes with both engine and a pair of passengers (theoretically) located aft of the driver. From a 3.6L boxer 6, the 911 manages 247hp, while the Ferrari produces 300hp from only 3.4L of displacement. That fact that the Ferrari tops out at around 158mph while the Porsche carries on until 163mph is an indication that the Mondial T is geared to rip, with a shorter final drive. Once into the power band, the Ferrari is likely to trounce the Porsche on acceleration.
If you keep up with our sister site, German Cars For Sale Blog, one thing is apparent. Porsche 911 prices, especially air-cooled models, aren’t exactly going down anytime soon. Have no fear, though, there are still some bargain exotics out there to be had. Chief among which is the Ferrari Mondial. A rare triple black Ferrari Mondial 1988; the last year Mondial’s had flared fenders. Upon purchasing the car last year I decided to put a Daytona style interior all in black leather. The exterior is like new condition with blemishes shown in pictures. A very strong running car that is an absolute pleasure to drive. The top is in excellent condition with leather boot. I have the Mondial manual and a service manual that go with the car.
Upon completion of all that was added, it was entered in a local car show winning honorable mention and best interior. Below is a list of all that was added along with all the imperfections of this car. In 1989, the Mondial saw a refresh in the bodywork, with a larger 3.4 liter engine and transverse layout, improving handling. Those Mondials tend to fetch a bit higher value, leaving the earlier generations trailing a bit. This one is priced well to move very quickly, given the amount of work done to it. Sure, the maintenance may be higher than the famous sports car from Stuttgart, but Ferrari panache is hard to beat.
The Mondial t was the final evolution in this mid-engined, 2+2 Ferrari that has always gotten sort of a mixed reception amongst Ferrari enthusiasts. While it looked similar to the original Mondial, this was a vastly different car, with the biggest difference appearing under the hood. The new Mondial t featured a longitudinally mounted V8 instead of the previous transverse setup. In addition, body colored bumpers and a revised front and rear fascia gave the Pininfarina lines a bit of a freshening. The Mondial t Coupe would only be sold for one year, in 1989, while the Cabriolet would soldier on until 1993.

This Triple Black Mondial T is one of the last years built and known as the Mondials final evolution. Referred to as a Mondial T for its Longitudinal placed engine. It was visually different from preceding Mondial models, most recognizable being the redesign of the air intakes to a smaller, neater rectangular shape. The door-handles were of a visually different design and, along with the bumpers, became body colored, whilst a painted black band was added around the bottom of the body. The 't' configuration was used by Ferrari's Formula One cars of the 1980s, and would be the standard for the marque's future mid-engined V8 cars. The "T" was home to other Ferrari firsts: It used power assisted steering for the first time, and had a 3-position electronically controlled suspension for a variable trade off between ride quality and road holding. It also had standard ABS.

Exterior: Original Ferrari NERO paint that does have hairline scratches from being under a car cover a majority of its life. Some rock chips and scratches that have been touched up by the owner. Paint still has great life left and doesn't appear to even have been color-sanded and buffed. This is a nice “honest” example...if you have been around Ferraris you will understand what I am saying. It hasn’t been altered or repaired.
Interior: Finished in Black leather interior that has never been “re-dyed” or painted. The leather is as it was originally with normal patina from its 19,811 miles. Comes with optional leather boot. Also has a rare tonneau cover. Convertible top has one repaired spot on the drivers side.
Engine/Transmission: Strong running 3.4L V8 that just had a complete 30k engine out service that includes the timing belt replacement, two months ago (complete with pictures) Nice shifting five speed that moves through its gaits well.
Overall, this is an extremely nice Mondial that shows like a 19,811 Ferrari. I am impressed with the fact that the car hasn't been messed with over the years. I wish it had a few less rock chips but I appreciate that the front end hasn't been repainted like so many have. I have been around many Ferraris over the years and so many have been "restored" by repainting them or spraying the interior. Like my buddy said the other day when he saw this car for the first time "This is the nicest Mondial I have seen in a long time."
Mondial History:
The Mondial line was made from 1980-1993 and available in both a coupe and a convertible. They were named after the the famed 500 Mondial race car of the early 1950’s. Styled by the legendary Pininfarina that styled with a total of just over 6,800 built over its 13 year run. The steel outer body was produced by the famous Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Scaglietti, just down the road in nearby Modena, built over a lightweight steel box-section space frame. The engine cover and rear luggage compartment lids are in light alloy. The seats and interior were trimmed in Connolly hide, contrasting with the body color. Most cars were painted Rosso red, but some were black or silver, and a few were dark blue.
A Mondial t of similar vintage can cost you anywhere from the high $20,000 range to $40,000 for the very best example out there. I'd suspect somewhere around $35,000 is where the reserve is set on this car. I'm particularly fond of this black one, as it helps mask a bit of the peculiar details and slightly awkward proportions of this particular Ferrari.
The Ferrari Mondial gets a bad rap amongst exotic car connoisseurs. Whether it's the styling proportions or the theory that it is the "lesser" Ferrari, I've heard it all. For those who really must have a Prancing Horse on the hood, you can't beat their value, though. In some cases, you can get into a Mondial for under $20,000, but to snag a good example that won't put you in the poor house, anything within the $20,000 range will buy you a good one these days. This early Mondial for sale in Florida looks to have received a repaint along with aftermarket wheels along the way. With a recent engine out service, this could potentially be a good entrance into the Ferrari club.

The affordable Ferrari. Is it just a myth or does it really exist? From the looks of this Mondial Cabriolet for sale outside of Philadelphia, it could be closer at hand than at first glance. It's tempting to think that you could get a fine Italian exotic for the price of a well equipped Honda Civic, but is it wise to pull the trigger?
Thank you for taking a moment to look at one of our finest vintage Ferrari offerings. This 1987 Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet combines the legendary style of the 80's Ferraris with state of the art (for its day) technological innovations and convenient 2+2 seating. That's right! This is a ragtop Ferrari the whole family can enjoy! This car has been pampered. It comes with the original tools, tonneau cover, boot, etc. The car's paint is practically perfect.
The interior is also in exceptional shape. This car is a bargain and needs very little to be a Platinum winning car at any Ferrari show. The 80 year old man who parted with this car so we could have it did not give us the service records. It will come to you ready to roll and should be low maintenance for the coming years. This car is at the end of its depreciation and can only go up in value. Treat this car right, and you can put a Ferrari notch in your belt for the ownership cost of a Honda Accord! This car has the following noteworthy items: 1) The top has had one small tear that was previously repaired. It was done properly and does not detract from the function nor the aesthetics of the top. 2) The rear windows work, but are slow to go up and down. The right rear window needs the help of a finger occasionally to go up. Not worth fixing until it doesn't work anymore (in my opinion).
At $22,000, this is bargain basement as drivable, presentable Ferraris go. It's disconcerting the seller did not get the service records from the previous owner. That leads one to believe there may be something to hide, because how hard would it have been to even make photocopies of the original documents? Buying any Ferrari without some sort of history is a huge risk. Anyone eyeing up a car like this should have it looked over, as there is no mention of a recent service or any maintenance items taken care of. Aside from that, at this price, this car looks very tidy cosmetically, both inside and out.
Towards the end of the Mondial production run, Ferrari decided to a be a bit daring and experiment with a semi-automatic version of the car’s 5-speed manual gearbox. Essentially the same transmission right down to the gear ratios, this gearbox was similar to the Volkswagen and Porsche Sportomatic gearbox in the 1970s, offering manual shifting without a third pedal. However, the Valeo system had a microprocessor controlling the clutch engagement which made for more refined shifting. This gearbox and automated clutch setup was designed to learn the user’s driving habits over time and even allowed for situations where you could engine brake if you lifted off the throttle. The clutch would then not fully disengage until you stopped the vehicle. Sophisticated stuff for the period and no doubt gave Ferrari a baseline on where to go with the semi-automatic gearbox in the future. This Mondial Valeo t Cabriolet for sale in Toronto offers a rare opportunity to purchase this clutchless cabriolet.
1992 Mondial t Cabriolet 2+2 Vaelo. This Mondial t comes equipped with a 3.4L quad cam V8 producing 300 horsepower coupled to a 5-speed Valeo semi-automatic transmission. Valeo was available as an option; while shifting was done by means of a traditional gear lever, the clutch was actuated automatically without a clutch pedal.
41,440 miles (approximately 66,000km) The Mondial t is a substantially changed vehicle to the previous Mondial. With a new engine and transmission layout it provides much improved handling and performance characteristics. This rare automated manual makes this car the perfect four-seat Ferrari.
Around $30,000 to $35,000 is what late model Mondial t Cabriolets are fetching these days. I'm not sure if the Valeo gearbox would add any significant value to the bottom line, as most enthusiasts would prefer three pedals. Still, as an engineering curiosity, this car may bring its fair share of interest from enthusiasts.
The Mondial has always been underappreciated by true Tifosi, but nevertheless it is a Ferrari. Introduced in 1980 as the successor to the 208 and 308 GT4, the Mondial evoked the name of a famous Ferrari race car from the 1950s. With close to 7,000 built over 13 years, this was a successful model for Ferrari. In 1989 the final evolution of the Mondial arrived, the "t." Offered in coupe and convertible form, the Mondial t did something uncommon when it comes to vehicle facelifts. Ferrari decided to mount the engine longitudally, with the gearbox mounted perpendicular to the engine, forming a "t" shape. The engine in question was a 3.4 liter V8 that produced 300 horsepower.
This particular Mondial for sale in California is the only year the Mondial t was offered in the US as a hardtop. In black with a special order sunroof, this is a rare combination for this 2+2 coupe.

What more can I say about this perfect example of a last year and limited production model of a Collectors Ferrari Mondail T Coupe. They do not come any cleaner, or tighter than this. AC blows cold, sunroof works flawlessly as do all the electrical components. There are no buzzers going off, no red lights on dash. Everything has been done and it drives like it did when it came off the showroom floor in late 1989. If it does not sell, I am keeping it and putting her back into a time capsule as it is only going to go up in value due to its rarety and fine collectors condition. This exact car was featured in the Motorweek show and is on the above video link.
With four days left, bidding is already over $40,000. This is a lot of money for any version of Mondial and may set a new high for the breed. Usually, one can expect to shell out anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 for a good example of one of these. Mondials which are selling for under $20,000 should be approached with caution and examined with a fine toothed comb. I’ve always felt a bit lukewarm towards the Mondial, but this t Coupe in black with the later, better integrated bumpers, makes for one clean looking coupe. We have not seen a mid-engine, 2+2 Ferrari since and maybe it’s time collectors give these cars more than just a passing glance.

A Ferrari for under $30,000 sure is tempting, but is it a smart buy? This 1988 Mondial Cabriolet is certainly attractive at $24,000. While it looks fairly straight, are there potential maintenance pitfalls afoot? The seller describes this Mondial as being mechanically solid, although it was the victim of a minor fender bender at one point.
This is a really nice car in excellent condition. Great paintwork (original except for right fender and bumper). There was a small accident 2 years ago that resulted in right fender damage as well as bumper and right fog light. No frame damage. The car runs very strong and shifts perfectly. It even goes into 2nd gear when cold which is a rarity with 328/308 and Mondial. The interior is almost factory new as well as the top. A new back window was installed about 4 months ago as the old was not clear and cracked. The top is perfect.
The air blows cold and everything works as it should. Heat cold etc. Brakes excellent tires excellent motor and drive excellent. Not sure when belts were changed but had them all checked with ferrari mechanic and he said they were in great condition. Everyone has a different idea when Ferrari belts should be changed. This is a chance to own a very nice Mondial at an incredibly low price. I just don't have time to drive it. The milage is low and this car is something that you can drive anywhere. A real head turner. These cars are starting to really go up in value.
As usual, while this car may only cost $24,000 to purchase, one could theoretically spend almost half that price embarking on a variety of maintenance items this car may need over the next few years. If I was in the position to have a second car, however, I'd certainly kick the tires on this car. Black works well with the slightly awkward proportions of the four seat Mondial and cosmetically, it looks rather good. If anything else, a solid starting point to fix up an average example of this open top Ferrari into an exceptional one.
Four seater Ferraris tend to play second fiddle to the more purpose built sports cars of the marque. Intended as a replacement for the Dino 308GT4, the Mondial began life as a coupe in 1982 while the cabriolet debuted one year later. This was a significant Ferrari in many ways, most notably it was one in which the engine and gearbox were attached to a removable subframe, allowing maintenance to be performed with ease.
This 1986 Mondial 3.2 represents the halfway point in the development of the series. Updates over the original Mondial included a 3.2 liter V8 with 280 horsepower and a revised interior. With a little over 23,000 miles, this appears to be a well cared for example at an attractive price, which begs the question: with such a short description, could it be a trap? Or a way to enjoy an Italian exotic at a fair price?

Entrance to the Ferrari club at this price is rare; if embarked upon, it should be done eyes wide open. While the owner claims this car has been serviced recently and runs fine, nothing short of a complete history would reassure potential buyers. A $25,000 car could easily turn into a $40,000 car in a heartbeat. While the Mondial is relatively easy to maintain compared to other Ferraris, this is still a Ferrari. For those on a budget, one must be fastidious with their accounting and vehicle selection so vehicle maintenance won't be a vehicle to bankruptcy.
