1974 Maserati Merak

Following yesterday's Lamborghini Urraco P250, we present Maserati's offering in the entry-level high-end mid-engine sports car space. Entry-level high-end. Hmm. Regardless, we're talking Porsche 911 fighters here. Powerful engines, smart chassis design, and not much potential for anything more than a weekend trip.

The Merak comes from the Citroen ownership era of Maserati history. Inside, you'll find a Citroen SM steering wheel and dashboard, while under the hood, the SM's 90 degree 187hp V6 makes an appearance. The bodywork forward of the doors is borrowed from the V8-powered Maserati Bora.

Oddly enough, it's the Citroen engineering that gives us hope for keeping one of these on the road with relative ease. The brake hydraulics are SM-derived, and while unorthodox, they are not as complex as they are made out to be. Keep in mind that it was this engine that made the basis for the later Biturbo cars, and while those can be a handful to maintain, the relative simplicity of the same basic engine in the SM and Merak will lend to a more satisfying ownership experience.

We're sort of surprised at the somewhat-reasonable price on what is, with only 600 units sold, a relatively rare Maserati. The Merak seems to track the pricing of its Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 more than it does the Urraco, or even the 911, for that matter. To us, it's a great opportunity to buy a great wedge design - from Giugiaro instead of Gandini, in this case. If this car cleans up and turns out to be in good mechanical order, we'd consider it to be a great purchase.

1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale

We're going to take a quick moment to present a view that we believe to be our own: The Alfa Romeo Milano/75 sort of reminds us of a sedan version of the Lancia Delta. It's not too clean a comparison, but imagine the Milano without a truck and you start to see it. Now, where the two cars do bear resemblance is in their power outputs; the Milano Verde's Busso V6 produces the same 183hp as the 1987 to 1989 Delta HF Integrale 8V's 2.0L turbocharged engine.

This car, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on where you stand on modifying rare cars, contains the improved 16V engine from a later 1987-1991 Delta HF Integrale 16V. Maybe someone can explain to us the logic of swapping out a turbo engine for another turbo engine in order to increase power by 15hp. Sure, the powerband is probably better, response might be sharper, but there are simpler and more easily-reversed tactics for increasing the power level of a turbocharged engine.

Used car in amazing condition for its year. Imported from Spain comin from a private collection in Madrid according to the broker who I bought it from. A TOTAL headturner. One byproduct of the inflated pricing on these cars is that replacement parts should be somewhat easier to come by. It's a tough balance, as an enthusiast of older cars - better to have cheap and plentiful examples, and spend multiples of their values in repair parts? Or is it perhaps more palatable to have cheap and plentiful repair parts, spending more on the original vehicle itself? Who knows, maybe both are expensive on these Integrale 16Vs.

We are total fans of the general styling of these Delta HF Integrales. From the boxed fender flares, to the dual round headlights, to the slanted rear hatch with upturned spoiler, to the phonedial wheels, to the unique door handles, the cars just get detail after detail right. $38k will buy you 200hp of red Ferrari, but you're stuck with a Mondial or a washed-up 308 at that point. With the Delta Integrale, you get the rarity factor, the Italian persona, the racing history, and the bright paint, and you get room for companions and some luggage.

1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT

Introduced to the North American market in 1975, the Alfetta ushered in an era of torsion bar front suspensions, DeDion rear suspension, and a rear transaxle with inboard disc brakes.  On paper, it improves on the classic GTV formula, but a quick look at the market shows a clear bias for the earlier 105/115 series over the later 116 transaxle cars.  As a result, finding a presentable, let alone rust-free Alfetta coupe is an evermore difficult prospect.

This bumperless example in Connecticut claims to be in rust-free condition, owing no doubt in part to its Texas provenance.  Though rumors abound as to the exact source of systemic rust on the Alfetta models, it is absolutely recommend that any potential sellers do a thorough check for lurking rust before any commitments to this particular car are made.  Especially vulnerable are the wheel arches, cowl area, rear hatch, and jack points.  If the claimed rust-free condition turns out to be the truth, then the uncombed interior might be easier to overlook.

Well sorted, rebuilt engine, high compression pistons, tubular headers, electronic ignition, spica fuel injection. Rebuilt suspension, red konis and poly bushings, new Pirelli tires and alignment. Some technical notes: the engine appears to have supported an A/C system at one point, owing to the stud-plug on the passenger side of the cylinder head.  Also, a rebuilt engine could be a solid advantage, but we would contact the seller for details - who rebuilt it, and what parts were sourced for the build?  And, we can't vouch for the specific brand of piston or headers that the seller reports as installed on this particular car, but both should promote a sporty character in line with the car - just don't expect to surprise anyone at a stoplight.

Very few Alfetta coupes remain on the road, and as such, the prices for clean cars have climbed out of the song and a dance category.  Fortunately for potential buyers, parts car prices remain reasonable.  We say make a competitive offer, source some Euro bumpers, recover the front seats, and drop in an ANSA rear muffler and enjoy a sorted Italian sports coupe for around $5,000.

1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale

There are few cars that combine so many of my favorite things quite like the Lancia Delta Integrale. Born to race, the Delta successfully combined elements of the E30 M3, Golf GTi and Audi Quattro to create its own legacy. The box flares, all wheel drive and turbocharged engine made nearly the perfect hot hatch. Though the Golf Rallye is sought after by the Volkswagen faithful, the reality is that the Delta Integrale was a better car - better proportioned, faster, and significantly more successful where it was intended to race - the World Rally Championship. The Integrale picked up where the legendary Quattro had started and swept to victory in nearly all of the races that it entered. As a result of its successes on the WRC circuit, the many different roadgoing versions of the Delta Integrale were very much welcomed by enthusiasts on the road:

Lancia designed the HF Integrale to incorporate the advanced technical features of the Delta HF 4WD, and to address its shortcomings as a rally car. For me, while the Quattro is a desirable car and I do love my Audi very much, the Lancia has always been an object of desire for me. It flies a bit lower on the radar than some of the other Group A entrants, and being newer many of the examples are still affordable; though with the E30 M3 bringing homologated race cars of this generation up in value it remains to be seen how long these classic Italian super-hot hatches will stay affordable. My suggestion is to grab one while you can!

1988 Lancia Thema 8.32

If you wanted to go fast in an executive sedan that was rear drive in the 1980s, you bought a BMW M5. If you wanted to go fast in an all-wheel drive sedan in the 1980s, you bought an Audi 200 or 5000 quattro. But if you wanted to go fast in a front wheel drive executive sedan in the 1980s, this is the car you wanted - the Lancia Thema 8.32. Outfitted with a Ferrari sourced, Ducati built 3.0 V8 channeling over 200 horsepower through the front wheels, the Thema was an unusual choice to go fast in. It was also an expensive one; the coin-counters at Lancia must have figured that if they priced it high enough, everyone would just buy it. They didn't. As a result, only around 4,000 total of these cars were produced and they were never imported to North America. Despite that, one has made its way around the world - from Italy to Japan, and then on to British Colombia where it's for sale today:

Condition throughout great shape no rust, the car is from Japan and has never bin driven in the winter .The interior seats are in really good shape, no rip, or stains on the seat .The dash has a crack from the sun and needs to be repaired .

This car is a lot of fun to drive, I driven a lot front wheel and this is the best one no torque steer .

Because of their limited appeal and running costs on the Ferrari V8, these Themas haven't gained the sporting reputation of the M5, nor have they gained the accompanying market value. Despite that, this is a pretty cool and interesting alternative to the M5, Audi quattros or Alfa Romeos and fast SAABS of the same generation. You're not likely to draw a crowd, unless of course you pop the hood and rev that glorious Ferrari V8 a few times. Unfortunately, that will be difficult in this particular example as the engine is in need of repair; however, in terms of Ferrari motors this is probably one of the cheapest you can fix. Does that make it worth it? Well, if the bidding stays low - it's at around $5,000 as of writing - this could make a neat and cheaper alternative to the quickly appreciating M5 market.

Well, first off, it's a nice example that's worth taking a look at; the Merak is one of the prettier "wedge" designs from Giugiaro, even if it lacked the performance of its big brother Bora. But what's unique about this one is what has occurred to the roof; because unlike nearly every other Merak out there, this one's a Targa::

1975 Maserati Merak AM122-2182

Customization by Steering Wheel Inc. in South Florida circa. 1975. This particular car was delivered new to the US in 1975, and had it's roof customized by Tom Clark Sr. the owner of SWI. The book this car is documented in is on page 222 of "The Maserati Road Cars, Post war production cars 1946-1979 by Richard Crump/Rob de la Rive Box".

The strengthening of the chassis was done at the sills, the windscreen pillars were gusseted on the seams (see book photograph, main picture). This part of the roof work was done by local company, Trust Manufacturing Co.

It came with a blue interior originally, which has since been changed to the current caramel hides you see today. It is in driver condition, with many documents and receipts for work done in the past 30+ years.

With her original Campagnolo wheels, she has had 1 re-spray (by Gene Winfield btw for you SoCal hot rod nuts), in 1982, major services (hydraulics/clutch) in 2003 and 2008, and remains largely original with 76,9xx miles showing.

The paint is not perfect, nor is it a show car, but more of a "good ol' nail of a driver" (as my friend says). Purchased new in Florida in 1975, she then went to California and remained with the same owner for the next 37 years. Tons of paperwork and receipts go with the car, detailed documentation and papers for everything that was worked on.

The Merak is really just a nice, California, no major issues Driver, that needs a new home, she starts right up @ cold, idles great, doesn't run hot, shifts, brakes and drives down the road quite well. She has never been wrecked, or damaged, clean, no issues, straight car, with no Smog too!!! (we have a Video of a Cold start and a quick drive off in her).

Please keep in mind, this car is 39 years old! It has never been restored, it has it's imperfections, so if you're looking for a "show" car, move on! I am upfront and blunt, I do not need to sugarcoat things like some people who sell. Pooling through the documentation on her, what I'm asking for the car and than some, adds up in receipts alone...

A clean, no stories, California Title (1975 NO SMOG!) comes with the car. The Merak also comes with (2) keys, original Owner's Manual, and 40+ pages of receipts/documentation.

Some areas of attention are as follows.

-All of the hydraulic lights on the dash work, and gauges (except noted gas gauge)

-A/C car, but currently non-functional, fan motor and defrost etc. run though

-Crack rear flying buttress (picture)

-Crack front bumper (picture)

-Chip in hood above Trident (picture)

-Hood latch is not working properly (hence the "ajar" look of the fitment per pictures, common)

-Driver window is slow going up/down

-Gas gauge is INOP

Yesterday on our sister site German Cars For Sale Blog, I wrote up a converted Porsche 928 - questioning the sanity of anyone that would take the roof off of an otherwise perfectly good coupe. I'm not sure why this was such a trend, but obviously it extended into the 1970s as well. It was reportedly converted when new and is generally original. These original run Meraks - during the Citroen ownership period - generally aren't the ones that are the most sought after, nor is this one in the best condition. But it's a neat piece of history for Maserati fans and I'm sure would be welcome at any meet; as a conversation starter alone, it's worth the story, especially with the documentation there!

1985 Maserati Quattroporte – REVISIT

This 1985 Maserati Quattroporte is one that we featured almost two years ago and is back up for sale in California. Series III Quattroportes are rarely this nice and are a tempting choice for fans of the 1980s who want the utmost in exclusivity.

ORIGINAL low mileage California car in excellent condition. Purchased for roughly $12,000 by me. Note: Shipping to Europe/UK easily arranged and contacts in place. It is very reasonable from CA and I am happy to arrange this for the buyer.

It is an automatic (727 Torqueflight original) and all of the key work needed has been done including a full rebuild of the transmission and much detailed work listed below. Totally renewed stainless exhaust and Cats passing smog for CA. It is also in one of the most attractive color combinations for this car. More pictures can be sent if you email me. This car has always been garaged including after the recent work was done.

This is an EXTREMELY rare car and any in decent shape they are getting rarer. There were 2,143 produced and this is one of 1,806 4.9 L automatics (to put this in perspective over 1m mustangs by year 2 of production and 8 million total!). Ridiculously underpriced in US. Sale in UK recently at 29,000 pounds and nice example in Germany at over 42,000 Euro.

Beautiful and extensively gone through collector owned car for sale. I own 3 of these cars and this one has undergone a lot of recent work and is only being sold only as I am moving forward with 2 other cars and just cannot have 3! Huge amount of time, effort and money spent. I know that I will be unlikely to recoup the funding spent but I do hope that it will go to someone who can continue the process. Car was purchased for about $12,000 and then there was a huge expenditure after this. New parts included!

Produced on January 1985, 4.9 litres, automatic gearbox, external colour "Antracite", interior in "Natural" leather. It was delivered on February 1985 to the Importer "Maserati Automobile Inc." in Baltimore (USA). Here are excerpts from the original ad from when I bought the the car:

"Life's Been Good" to this 1985 Maserati Quattroporte...When Joe Walsh stated "My Maserati Does 185"...he had a circa 1962 Maserati 5000GT, capable of at least 170+ mph. All Maserati automobiles equipped with this four camshaft/hemi/V-8, starting with the mid-1950's Maserati 450S race car, through the limited production 5000GT (33 produced) , ending with the Quattroporte (2155 produced) were guaranteed to raise the excitement level. The soundtrack and power delivery of this engine was and is a winner from day one.

This rust free, exceptional & all original 67,959 mile Maserati Quattroporte has had the best of care. Maintenance receipts for over $12,000 and owner's / repair manuals come with the car. There is no doubt previous owner, "Style Icon" Tatiana Sorokko, a Bay Area fashion fixture, enjoyed her days with this car. Paint, chrome, body trim, and leather/wood interior are all in remarkable, near new condition. The photographs are representative of the actual condition of the car.

Drive report: we enlisted a Maserati expert to evaluate the car. He has repaired Maserati cars for 30+ years and reported as follows:

Front suspension and shock absorbers quiet and smooth, no clunks etc. Tire condition excellent with excellent wear pattern.
Rear suspension excellent / rear axle gear quiet - no appreciable backlash.
Brake pad and rotor condition: very good to excellent. Tires are new.
Transmission shifts properly / excellent fluid condition.
Engine condition: notes include very clean carburetors- no damage / stripped screws (very common)
Oil Pressure very high (indicative of low mileage)
Operating temperature proper / electric fan actuation and wiring good
Engine power delivery proper (280 hp all present)
Belts and hoses all at current maintenance level
Gauges / lights and other electrical items worked properly when tested.
Road test shows a top condition, nice driving car.
Originally a $65,000 car in 1985.

When I purchased this car it was in very good original condition and had benefitted by being owned by someone who used it regularly and kept it in very good condition. The undercarriage was immaculate and the car was really in excellent condition. That said it was over described and needed a few things refreshed - many of these are really deferred maintenance issues for a car of this age. In short, it was a really good car but needed some “refreshing”. Basically, the car had not been messed with and I spoke with the earlier owner who had sold it at a cancer charity auction! The company I bought if from owned it a short time and it was over described.

The story of this car will be featured on an upcoming article on Quattroporte IIIs but I will summarize the work done with some estimates of costs:

EXHAUST: New stainless steel exhaust from front to back and four CATS to make it fully CA compliant. NOS headers for the car also to bring the emissions system into full working order as well as the setting up of the original CA emissions system. This required a great deal of work as this year of QP III was not in the CA database but we got it done. (approx $4,000 (parts, labour, shipping, CATS, admin and shop time)

BODY: The body is in excellent condition - a true California car. There were some minor issues.
-All the side lights and turn signal lenses were replaced with NOS from MIE (US Maserati supplier of choice)
There was a dent in the lower side body moulding and a NOS part from MIE was purchased and installed (easy fix)
The headlight surround is a unique part on US cars. I was specifically told by the seller it was undamaged but it was broken and a NOS unit was bought from MIE and the front headlight assembly was removed and replaced.
Paint is excellent and a good color but a small touch up by the left rear light is required along with repair of the rubber on the bumpers which is an easy fix.

MOTOR SET UP - car was taken to STEWARTS in Sacramento for specialist work. They did a lot of work on getting the car running right, rebuilding the carbs, missing carb parts (who knows where they were lost!), vacuum set up). Essentially, their job was to check over the motor and make sure it was working right, safe and set up right. A list of their work is on the bills.
One running issue was caused by a faulty CAT which was replaced on warranty

INTERIOR -

Interior wood was described as “in remarkable near new condition”. It was a lie - the wood was damaged around the transmission selector and the laquer had turned milky white on the doors and dash. This is a common issue for this car. HOWEVER TO DO IT RIGHT IS IS A DASH OUT JOB. It was done right with the dash out and wood sent to experts and Madera Concepts in CA who did an amazing job and a perfect match on the transmission selector section. I can’t say enough about how well they did - it looks amazing and is show ready.

TRANSMISSION - This was also described as perfect and it was not. It needed a full rebuild but it is the lovely 727 Torqueflight so easy to do. This work has been fully done along with a full rebuild of the starter (why not as it is a Mopar unit and the transmission is out)

MISCELLANEOUS - too much to mention as all things that were noted by me were fixed as they we noted with new parts. This included wiper blades and covers and a host of small parts etc. NOS jack purchased and in the trunk.
TO DO - A car like this can always be improved and it is in excellent condition. There are probably a couple of areas I would think about looking at in future as noted above. I have assisted with the design of a new set of Ohlins that are made for this car and would be a useful upgrade. The mirrors were done nicely but always a weak spot in this car. I am told that MIE does a new set and it might be worth looking at in due course but these are good. The tires are new but not the Michelin XWXs. I have a set you can buy if you want. I cannot think of anything else needed.

Current status. The car had just finished having the transmission done and is with a relative at his automotive shop in Roseville (Sacramento) CA. Any inspection is welcome and will arrange shipment. I have lots of bills and details that I can send to you also.

Description of QP III
The new Quattroporte III came to the market during the De Tomaso era for Maserati. It was designated 'AM 330 Berlina Quattroporte’ but was quickly known as the Quattroporte III. Although production continued into the Biturbo era the selling mates of the QP III as shown in a brochure package were the Kyalami, Khamsin, Merak 2000/SS

Here is how it was described by Ermanno Cozza:

In spite of its considerable size, Giugiaro's classic styling gave the Quattroporte III the visual concept of strength and speed; a long imposing bonnet, once more housing a V8 engine, sloped down to a large trapezoidal chrome radiator grille adorned with the traditional trident, flanked by pair of twin rectangular headlamps.

Its low wide body, featuring a character line along its flanks, allowed the low roof line to flow gracefully, via the acute angled rear quarter-lights and a full-width slanting rear window, to an ample boot compartment. With the Northern American car regulations in mind, the Quattroporte III was fitted with heavy rubber inset impact-absorbing bumpers, giving the car a solid imposing look. Thanks to its width and roof height, the interior had the atmosphere of 'a living room', without any loss of light or visibility. Make no mistake, this was car was much bigger than it looked!

The interior was comfortable, elegant and functional. The dashboard, trimmed in rich leather with briar-wood veneered panels, housed a large rectangular easy to read instrument panel. The anatomically designed seating was upholstered in 'glove-soft' Italian leather, as were the finishing panels of the velour roof lining. The leather trimmed and wood-veneered centre console, housed the air conditioning controls, radio, gear lever and an armrest which doubled as a lid for the convenient storage compartment. Naturally the car was fitted with air conditioning as standard.

Originally a $65,000 car in 1985, a Quattroporte such as this would generally sell in the $8,000 to $14,000 range today. Given the car's prominent previous owner, condition and run down by a marque expert, it will more than likely command a value in the upper reaches of that range, provided the right buyer comes along.

Mid-Engined Maseratis: 1977 Maserati Bora & Merak SS

Maserati is one of those companies that came back from the brink. Several times. Through multiple owners the marque somehow bumbled its way throughout the 20th century, eventually being absorbed by Fiat, where it is currently enjoying a renaissance. At the end of the 1970s, however, the situation was bleak. Maserati's owner, Citroën, went into receivership in 1975. The new controlling group, PSA Peugeot Citroën declared this applied to Maserati as well. After ownership was transferred to an Italian government and eventually, Alejandro de Tomaso, they were forced to lumber along with the same products until de Tomaso geared up production of the Quattroporte III, Kyalami (based on the De Tomaso Longchamp) and the Biturbo.

The last holdovers from the Citroën era are the two vehicles we see here, the Bora and Merak. These were limited production sports cars that, while pretty, couldn't secure the future of the company. The first car we'll take a look at is the Bora. This car's V8 engine could trace its lineage back to the 450S race car, with four cams, 16 valves and hemispherical combustion chambers. Just over 500 Boras were built, with an almost equal number distributed between the 4.7 and 4.9 liter models. This 4.9 for sale in Miami is a low mileage barn find and was sold new in Florida.

Bora values languished for a while, but in the last couple of years have shot up. These cars represented everything great about Maserati, from eye-catching good looks to a sonorous, race bred engine. It seems that collectors have finally taken notice. The seller is asking all the money for this one. Given the interesting history and very low mileage, I'm not surprised.

The next Maserati we'll take a look at is this 1977 Merak SS, which is sometimes described as the junior version of the Bora. The Merak is two cylinders down on the Bora, sharing its engine with the Citroën SM. The smaller engined allowed for limited rear seating, best for either children or small luggage. This car would compete with the Lamborghini Urraco and Ferrari 308GT4 as a sort of entry-level super car. This Merak SS is also for sale in Florida, a little further north of the Bora, situated in Orlando.

This a 1977 Maserati Merak SS, a very unique car. It has a great color combination, orange exterior with black leather interiors. The car has A/C, radio cassette, power windows (are not working), and tilt wheel. It also has a 5 speed transmission. This car has a V6 engine with 3 carburetors. The mileage is only 14,152 (exempt). Personally, I'm a fan of the pre-1976 Meraks, as they had the stylish Citroën SM dashboard. This feature would disappear after Citroën went belly-up. In 1976, they would transition to a dashboard with more square aesthetics. Given the smaller engine, it's no surprise the Merak is more affordable than the Bora. The best Meraks out there may bring in the $50,000 to $60,000 range. This example is quite presentable, if a little bit rough around the edges and has the problem with the non-funtioning windows. Expect an example like this to fetch somewhere in the $35,000 to $40,000 territory.

Alfa Romeo began to go through some changes in the late 1980s. While the Spider continued on through a fourth generation in the 1990s, the coupes and sedans would undergo a transformation to front-wheels drive. Ultimately, an Alfa Romeo coupe would not return to the US market before the marques demise in this country in 1995, leaving this final year GTV6 for sale in Georgia as a representative of the last of the breed. These coupes have been recognized for their poise, balance and overall driving enjoyment which they provide and yet they still remain rather affordable.

Offering at NO RESERVE... a very nice one owner 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV-6 (The last year of it’s production, with improved shifting and A/C). Clean Georgia title in hand. Very rare Champagne (only offered in 86) (gold) with black pinstriped velour interior with 123,633 miles. Tom purchased this car new from my father at Paul Spruell Alfa, Inc. in Chamblee GA. This GTV-6 has been very well cared for and it shows.

It is a very original and unmolested example, cared for by an AROC member. It is equipped with the sunroof and it still has the original (working) radio. The only aftermarket modifications that I saw, were the Hella H4 low beam headlights, some MB Quart speakers and two center mufflers. No accidents... No rust. I started this car up on the first turn of the key and it drives superbly.

I intentionally did some 3rd to 2nd downshifts while the car was still cold (as cold as it gets in South GA in August) to test the 2nd gear syncro... and it is good. The engine and drive-line are smooth. When you remove the oil cap from the 2.5 liter 154 HP V-6, it looks like new inside (very clean). It is equipped with a factory catalytic converter and a has a documented history of passing Georgia state emissions test with flying colors.

The stock suspension is tight without any noise. The Michelin tires are perfect, with only 3,000 miles and the original wheels are in excellent cosmetic condition. The cooling system functions properly with both fans cycling correctly. The body is as good as it gets, with only a few trivial nicks that have been touched up. Other than a few tiny drips on the garage floor... the car has no leaks to be concerned about.

Electrical items work (windows, mirrors, lights, wipers, blower fan, gauges). The dash clock does not work. It comes with the original books, manuals, receipts (back to the delivery paperwork), spare keys, emergency window crank and a factory service manual. It has the emergency jack, spark plug swivel socket tool and pouch. Also, it has the brown plastic tool pouch with the lug wrench and pliers. So the tools are not quite complete.

Recent work:

Just done – Brake master cylinder, left rear brake caliper and rear brake pads.

May 2004 – Timing belt, tensioner & water pump. New ignition switch.

November 2004 – new clutch assembly, drive-shaft bearing and rear flex joint

Here are the important details.

The steering wheel is slightly off center to the right, however the alignment seems okay (drives straight).

A/C does not work. The last time it was charged (years ago) it did work. So... it has a leak.

Rear view mirror needs to be glued back to windshield.

Although the car has been garaged kept, the dash does have a crack near the top vent and also I did notice that the RPM needle is slightly bent.

The left front turn indicator lens has a couple of cracks, that have been taped up to keep moisture out.

The battery has also been replaced recently and the hold down bracket looks like it needs to be modified to secure the battery.

Very typical of the GTV-6.... someone tried to close the hood without pulling the prop from the locked position and bent the hood prop. So it needs to be straightened in order to work.

The gas cap key will turn the lock cylinder, but the cap will not lock.

On this model, the antenna is built into the windshield. I could see a couple of spots where it has been compromised, so don’t expect the best reception, without adding an external antenna.

It has a small tear on the drivers side seat side bolster and the usual interior felt coming loose from the door gasket (but gaskets are not torn).

The white plastic bezel around the sunroof handle needs to be dyed and the headliner is in better than average cosmetic condition.

The rear trunk/hatch logo emblem is showing its age.

The only spot of rust I found was a nickel size hole in the spare wheel floor pan. Also, the spot welds on the tow hook on the bottom of the spare wheel pan have come loose, from where it was towed at some point. But it did not bend or tear the sheet metal. I know these cars and where to look for rust. No rust under the cowl area in the engine bay, None at the front shock towers. Although, I did not remove the plastic rocker trim behind the front wheels, I could see no indication of rust.

No disappointments here. Drive this car anywhere. Once funds have cleared, you can take it. No games. Also, temporary garage storage is okay, as long as the car is paid for. Beige isn’t my favorite color choice for an Italian sports coupe, but beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to a clean GTV6. This car has a lot going for it, not the least of which is the condition, AROC member ownership and service history. The asking price is right around the range of what mint GTV6s are pulling, which is between $8,000 to $12,000. I’d expect someone to snap this one up in short order. Whoever buys it will have a blast on the back roads, tackling the twisty bits.

1967 Ghia 450SS

Known more for their role in lending a design edge to some Fords and Volkswagens over the years, Ghia developed a few of their own cars years ago, albeit in small numbers. The 450SS was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his stint at the design firm. Unveiled at the 1966 Turin International Auto Show, it was produced through 1967, with a limited number of 52 being built by hand. These cars were built on a Plymouth Barracuda chassis and were powered by Chrysler’s 273 V8 mated to a 3-speed Torqueflite transmission. Rarer than most Italian exotics, these Ghias are certainly attention getters and one of the most elegant looking roadsters of the period.

Carriage House Motor Cars is pleased to offer a very special and unusual 1967 Ghia 450 SS for bid. This car is 1 of 52 ever produced and one of less than half that number known to still exist. It features it's original 273 Formula S Plymouth Barracuda V8 and 3 Speed TorqueFlite Automatic Transmission. The vision of Hollywood producer Burt Sugarman, these cars were produced for only a couple of years (1966-67) and were sold for the staggering sum at that time of $13,000. Giorgetto Giugiaro designed the original concept known as the Ghia GT based on a Fiat 2100 chassis and proudly displayed the car at the 1966 Turin Automobile Show.

This example was the property of a prominent collector here in the New York Area and originally a rust free car from Southern California. Cosmetically superb with very nice paint and chrome, Borrani Wire Wheels that were just detailed and the optional factory hardtop. The soft top is good condition and a very nice original leather interior. A Ghia 450SS in good condition will range between $85,000 to $125,000. This particular car appears to have been restored at some point, although that is not confirmed in the ad. Italian American hybrids such as these are good for collectors who are a bit gun shy of taking on the challenge of exotic car ownership. With its Chrysler engine and drivetrain, parts are easier to source and reliability is much higher than if it would have come equipped with a bespoke Italian engine. The only problem I could see with this car is having to answer the never ending question to passers by: "what is it?"
