1972 Lancia Fulvia 1.3S

I wasn't your ordinary teenager. When my peers were pouring over tarted up Japanese subcompacts and muscle cars, I had different ideas. I always wanted a Lancia Fulvia. The looks, the oddity of a V4 engine with a 5 speed dogleg gearbox and the rally pedigree were enough to get me hooked. I still haven't experienced the pleasure of owning a Fulvia, or any Italian car, for that matter. Being the determined person I am, however, I know I will achieve that goal someday. Unlike a few Fulvias we've featured recently, this one isn't residing in the old world. It's right here in New York.

This is a absolutely beautiful Red 1972 Lancia Fulvia 1.3S coupe, all restored to its original condition. The 1972 Lancia Fulvia is special because in this year it made automotive history by winning the International Rally Championship. This car is a 5 speed manual transmission and its a blast to drive! This car was professionally maintained in Italy before being shipped by its only owner. The owner is a distinguished Italian gentleman that collects cars. He is a long time member of the Italian racing club Scuderia del Castello Alcamo and this car is his show baby.

That being said this car is in excellent condition. The interior is soft black leather with no rips or tears. The dash has no cracks and the wood is perfect. The body has no rust and the lines of this car are perfectly aligned (as you can see in the pictures). The chrome is in excellent condition around the windows and bumpers. The motor and clutch was restored in Italy before being shipped, since then the car is has been mechanically kept by and well known Italian mechanic and the car has been kept in a temperature controlled garage. Mechanically the car is in excellent condition and no expense has been spared! I want to make sure that you when you bid and buy this car you buy it with confidence! So in an effort to be totally transparent this car is a 9.5 out of 10. It has does have a rip on the roof lining 3 inches long, the lining is original and it was white and a little dirty. The paint has some minor chips, under a half inch and less then 5. The rocker panel chrome is a little worn (I'll post the picture). If you Google this car, 1972 Lancia Fulvia you will see what they are going for! This car reserve will be way way below what most people want for this car.

Average prices for Fulvias that reside stateside are averaging around the $15,000 to $20,000, with the very best examples reaching into the $20,000 range. Enthusiasts in the US are beginning to recognize just how significant these vehicles are and soon you'll see values of these trend closer to the legendary Alfa Romeo GTV Coupes. If this car could be had for right around the $15,000 mark, it would be a smart buy and a very savvy way to get into the hobby of classic Italian car ownership. It certainly is well presented and shows little in the way of modification.

And the exhaust note is intoxicating...

1974 Lancia Fulvia S3

The Lancia Fulvia is one of my favorite Italian coupes. It's slanted grille, delicate roofline and proportions that suggest a larger car than you would think give it presence to which new cars can not hold a candle. I've always dreamed of owning one, but sadly, this V4 powered rally legend is getting more and more expensive by the minute, at least in the US market. Scour the classifieds in Europe, however, and it's another story. Here is a clean example with a repaint and original interior for sale at a reasonable price in my homeland, Portugal.

1974 Lancia Fulvia S3

Currently in a very good condition. Carefully maintained. Excellent mechanical condition. Repainted 7 years ago, remains very, very nice with no defaults. Absolutely rust free! The interior and chrome were in perfect condition and still original. This Fulvia shows all the original details. Very clean car with nice looks.

At €8,500 (~ $11,300), even including the cost of shipping stateside, this represents a good value for a well preserved Fulvia. These cars are beginning to see a rise in values and given their history and significance, will continue on an upswing as enthusiasts come to appreciate them.

1974 Lancia Fulvia 1300 S3

We’ve covered a lot of cars on this blog which have contributed to the impressive collection of World Rally victories Lancia has amassed over the years, but the following car is where it all started. In 1972, The Fulvia Coupe won the International Championship and the famed Monte Carlo Rally after the final Alpine Renault retired due to mechanical failure. The Fulvia was praised in the motoring press as being a triumph of engineering, no doubt in part to their front-drive chassis, four wheel disc brakes and innovative V4 set at an angle in the engine bay. Here we have a 1974 example for sale with the famed red and black livery colors of the era. This car has the 1.3 “S” motor producing 92 horsepower.

1974 Lancia Fulvia 1300 S3

Upon its release in 1967, the American magazine Road & Track described the Fulvia as a precision motorcar, an engineering tour de force, mostly because of its original specifications. A front-wheel-drive car in the sports car world was pretty unusual, but not as much as the narrow 1.3 V4 engine, mounted with a 45° angle. This allowed the engine to be mounted in a very forward position, allowing for a roomier cockpit. Offered in numerous bodies, trim levels and engine powers, no Fulvia was as famous as the 1600 HF which allowed Lancia to take first place in the 1972 FIA International Championship for Manufacturers rally series. We are happy to offer for sale this exceptionally well-preserved example of Lancia Fulvia 1300 S 3 Coupe. In fully original specifications, this Fulvia Coupe S3 only has 70,000 km on the clock, which is very likely to be the original mileage given the outstanding preservation of this Fulvia. Still sporting its original Italian Targa Nera, this all original Fulvia Coupe 1300 S3 is immediately available in Italy.

THe asking price of €20,000 (~$26,000 USD) is about in line with where values of Fulvias are going these days. They are not as common or coveted as their contemporary, the Alfa Romeo GTV, but these diminutive, well proportioned coupes are beginning to claim their fair share of the limelight due to Lancia's storied rally history and the innovative engineering manufactured into them.

Here is some vintage footage from the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally, where the Fulvia 1.6 HF claimed victory:

1971 Lancia Fulvia Sport 1600

The Fulvia was the car that put Lancia front and center in the minds of rally drivers. Made famous by its impressive showing as the car which won the 1972 International Rally Championship, the Fulvia was the last car to be designed wholly by Lancia, with Fiat taking the reigns on product development thereafter. These coupes had a V4 engine mounted at 45 degrees and the Zagato added a bit of pedigree with bespoke styling and aluminium body panels. Here is a 1971 Fulvia Zagato Sport 1600 with the largest capacity V4 engined offered, a 1.6 liter.

This is a 1971 Lancia Fulvia Sport 1600 - Imported from Italy in 1996 to Brookfield Wisconsin. It has a 1.6 Ltr, V4 Engine that starts and runs very well. This vehicle is mechanically in great shape. The odometer reads 95,000 KM, roughly 59,000 Miles, but runs and drives like a new vehicle. The gearbox also has been taken care of and shifts well with no syncro issues. No major repairs on the engine, gearbox, or other major parts have been needed.

Clearly, this vehicle has been stored well as there is no rust to be found anywhere on the vehicle. Please refer to photos of the underside too. There is no frame or body rust whatsoever. The paint is original and still in great shape for its age - there are no dings or major scratches in the paint. The interior surfaces are all also in great shape the leather looks as if it has only been rarely used. Included with this sale is the original manual, as well as assorted service and registration records from Italy. This Lancia is in great shape and ready for a new home - whether you plan to drive this car daily, or show it, this car is up to the task! Don't miss your chance to get a Lancia in great shape!

Personally, I prefer the delicate looks of the standard Fulvia over the Zagato version, but with 115 horsepower on tap, this is one cracker of a lightweight. The matte trim and absence of the usual chrome bumpers lends an air of weekend track day car to this particular Fulvia, but with it's five speed gearbox and accomodating hatchback design, it would be practical enough to use during the week. With about five days left in the auction, bidding is glancing $30,000 and the reserve has not been met. This is very dear money for a Fulvia of any kind, as honest examples are seeing prices top out in the low $20,000 range. One can't be certain if we've reached the tipping point in terms of Fulvia popularity, but there is no denying that car represents a high point in Lancia engineering and innovation.

1971 Lancia Fulvia 1.3s

The Lancia Fulvia was where Lancia began it's amazing run in the International Rally Championship, winning the title in 1972. Not only that, this is possibly one of the most gorgeous two door coupes to emerge from the 1970s. It's an interesting car that has an interesting engine; a narrow angle V4 mounted at a 45 degree angle, using one single cylinder head. Mint condition Fulvias are rather rare in the US, and I was surprised to see one for sale nearby in Washington, D.C.

Here we have a very rare Lancia 1.3S Fulvia. Nice, straight, rust free car that has been owned for the last 30+ years by a local collector. Paint has a few chips, nicks, and cracks but is still very presentable. Body fit is very good and no accidents ever. Interior seats, door panels, are all new correct leather. Dash is origianl and has a crack along the passenger side but the face is quite nice. Headliner and carpets are also very good. Gauges are in excellent shape and all function well. Engine has been professionally maintained its whole life and is very strong. New clutch, slave and brake master cylinder were recently rebuilt.

Overall mechanics of the car are very, very good. Gearbox is tight and all synchros are nice. Car is a blast to drive. Front wheel drive makes for a thrilling ride on a twisty road. Just a rare italian sports coupe that is becoming hard to find in this country.

These Fulvias are one of my favorite Italian vehicles of all time. It's a very small car, but its delicate details make it appear sleeker and larger than it actually is. This car has appeared before on eBay, and the asking price of $21,000 is not cheap, but if you want one of the best Fulvias currently on sale in the United States, this is it.

1971 Lancia Fulvia Zagato 1.3S

Just up the road from me, this Fulvia Zagato 1.3S is for sale in Portland, Oregon. The 1.3L engine puts out a bit over 100hp originally and weighs about 2000lbs, which should be a pretty entertaining drive. But I really don't care how fast it is because it's spectacular just to look at. What an awesome looking front end, for 1971 especially.

The author's description of the car:

Too many cars and moving to a smaller place. I don't want to but must sell this wonderful car. The car was purchased in Florence Italy in 2003 and imported to Portland, Oregon. In 2003 and 2004 most everything was redone. The engine and transmission were overhauled by Veloce Motors in Gervais, Oregon and the car had a total repaint to original color. The seats and dash were repaired. This car is beautiful and ready to enjoy now. I have all reciepts since 2003. The engine has only 6000 miles since the overhaul (new .020 oversize pistons, new eng bearings, timing chain, valves, guides, seals, water pump ect) . This car has: 1300cc V-4 , 5 speed transmission (new bearings and synchros & new clutch), new shocks, new brake pads, new windshield seals, new headliner, freash service.

Altough this seems like a restoration it is not. However almost everthing that needed to be done has been done. The reserve price is much lower than the buy it now price, which is also a bargin. Don't wait to bid, just hit buy it now and you won't lose out on an outstanding value in a wonderful classic (that you won't have to spend $40,000 on a restoration).

A very sharp little sports car and small, and weird little cars are hot right now. This would be a fun addition to someone's collection.
