For car enthusiasts in the US, waiting 25 years for a car to become legal to import can be excruciating. But dial back to the 1960s and 1970s and there’s plenty of interesting cars that are rare on these shores that you could import with zero hassles. One of my favorites is the Lancia Fulvia Coupe. For a design from the 1960s it was exceptionally clean and minimalistic and hid some advanced technology underneath, such as front-wheel drive and a 5-speed gearbox. This later 1976 Fulvia was recently imported from Italy and was recently given a respray.

Vintage Lancias, like Saabs, have always been the thinking man’s classic in my estimation. Probably not surprising, then, that Lancia and Saab created a joint venture by way of the Lancia Integrale and Saab-Lancia 600 in the early 1980s, respectively. Even with front-wheel drive, the Fulvia is a great handling classic and a hoot to drive on a rally stage. Expect to pay in the mid $20,000 range for a good Fulvia, with exceptional ones these days reaching into the $30,000 bracket.
Its very interesting to me how each of the styling firms in Italy has distinctive features that seem to carry across their different designs. Perhaps when you first see the shape you don't immediately recognize the designer, but once you know it makes sense. Vignale and Touring had inspired if conservative designs; increasingly both Bertone and Pininfarina captured the angular market. Giugiaro's work at multiple firms carrys a signature blend of angles and curves, but one of the most distinctive in my mind are the Zagato designs. Be it an Aston Martin or an Alfa Romeo, the Zagato brand meant one thing - tight curves that pared down the shape to a bare minimum, flowing tightly around the wheel arches with minimal overhangs front and back. Some of the best known Zagato work is with the Alfa Romeos and Aston Martins of the 1960s and 1970s, but one neat car they really added a lot of character too was the already colorful Lancia Fulvia Sport:

When talking about really classic Italian designs, both the Fulvia and Zagato's work usually make the mark, and the combination here was both inspired and unique. Though certainly some aspects of the design are reminiscent of the NSU Ro80, the Fulvia Sport stands on its own as a truly neat design. This is the way to buy one; a one owner car that is in pristine condition - and the Zagato name doesn't break the bank here. Whereas an Aston will set you back the best part of a few million dollars, you can get into a similarly styled Lancia for just under $40,000. That strikes the middle ground on the Fulvia - cheaper than some of the most expensive models but about double what a condition 1 1.2 from the same year will set you back. It seems appropriate given the unique nature of the car that this should be the case, and I'd still consider $38,000 to be a reasonable asking price for such a cool car!
Lancia has been in a period of decline since the mid 1990s. Around that time the rally legend, the Delta Integrale, disappeared. Since then, the lineup has consisted of Fiat rehashes and more recently, rebadged Chryslers. Now with news that Fiat is restricting Lancia sales to Italy, it seems the writing is on the wall and this is another marque that will disappear. For now, let's enjoy some of the classics, like this 1973 Fulvia 1.3S for sale in Florida.

It's often said that the 1970s were a sort of wasteland of car design. While the Fulvia's origins date from the 1960s, this car lasted well into the 1970s and was an exercise in restrained elegance. For a while, these Fulvias hovered in the realm of affordability, but like many classic cars, prices are on the rise. We featured a 1976 Fulvia 1.3S last month for sale at $22,000. Most Fulvias of this vintage and trim level can be had in the low to mid $20,000 range, so this one at $30,000 is certainly testing the waters. If it's as good in person as it looks in pictures, this one may be worth a premium.
I guess I'm on a bit of a Lancia kick over the last few posts, but what drew me to this car was the rarity and the color. It is, after all, Easter and what more fitting way to celebrate than with an egg-colored Fulvia? If you were serious about this car, it's worth a call to figure out what the story is. Granted, the photos aren't stellar, but the price is right at the bottom of the market for HF 1.6s - $55,000 is downright affordable for a real deal HF. So what is the deal? Why is this car priced $30,000 below where it could be? A few careful calls and inspections could reveal the truth, or a stunning deal on a very neat classic Lanica!
There are few cars prettier, in my opinion, than the Lancia Fulvia Coupe. So delicate are the details of this car that you barely notice how small this two-door really is until you get right up on it. But beauty also lies beyond the surface in this case, with an innovative narrow angle V-4 engine, 5-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive that gave this car the prowess it needed to dominate on the rally circuit. Fulvias are few and far between in the US, but this one just arrived via Italy and is looking for a good home.

These Lancia Fulvias are one of the best kept secrets of the classic Italian car game. While they may not have the rear drive handling characteristics of the Alfa Romeo 105/115 GT and GTV coupes, it has similarly handsome lines and an engineering pedigree that predates the Fiat/Lancia merger. The asking price is just about right for what appears to be a very nicely kept example, as the high end for Fulvias of similar vintage tend to hover around the mid to high $20,000 range.
While the Lancia Fulvia Coupe was out racking up rally victories, it's four-door counterpart went rather unnoticed throughout its production run. Perhaps it was the Fulvia Berlina's homely yet tailored looks, but beneath lied advanced technology for the age. The engine was a narrow angle V4, mounted at a 45° angle. One camshaft operated all intake valves and another operated the exhaust valves. The use of a narrow angle allowed Lancia to package the engine with one cylinder head. Add to this engine four-wheel disc brakes, front-wheel drive and front independent suspension and you had a formula for fun. This Fulvia Berlina for sale in Maryland is a little rough but is perfect for someone looking for a collectible to tinker with and improve this winter.

Here is one of the last TRUE Lancia automobiles. That illustrious company was bought by Fiat in 1969, and built their last Fulvia Berlina in 1972. Though a few Fulvia Coupes were built until 1976, the rest of the line was converted to Fiat-designed vehicles (of much lower quality).
The Fulvia probably killed Lancia because it cost too much to produce. Though it was only a small-displacement car, it was engineered with the same high standards as the more expensive Lancias. Many details of these last Lancias show amazing attention to detail, and extraordinary engineering creativity. Many parts are cast, not stamped steel.
I imported this car from the Venice area of Italy in November 2004. It has been a wonderful car to own and drive and even enjoy as garage-art. But it does very few miles and needs attention in a number of areas, and it is time for someone with fewer vehicles (or more resources!) to bring it back to its former glory.
Pros
- Original engine/trans/rear work well and this is a wonderful driving car. Bend it through a corner and it will track like an arrow through the apex.
- The body is fundamentally solid. There have been a few body repairs done, and it does show some rust damage around the windshield, but this is not one of those Italian cars that swam through salt water to get here!
- All electrical systems/lights work
- Great color combo
- All original down to the hubcaps with their beautiful cast centers
- Shortly after the car landed, we dropped the front sub-frame and did an extensive update, including clutch, rear main seal, steering box bushings, axle boots and all rubber bushings that mount the sub-frame to the body. We painted the body mount boxes with anti-rust paint to assure future integrity.
Cons
- The car needs minor body work and paint. Ideally, you'd have a body shop do all the minor imperfections, including removing the windshield to repair the rust there, then paint the same solid dark blue color it is now.
- It needs tires. The Fulvia still has the European tires I bought it with and I hate to replace them if the next owner wants a wider tire or different wheel.
- There are a number of small projects to be done (it is a 1972!) including aligning the steering wheel, new weatherstripping, and gaskets in the gauges.
- There is a slight exhaust leak. It sounds lovely going through the gears, but I now hear a slight leak closer to the manifold.
Btw, parts for this car are not hard to find. Not necessarily cheap, but they are available. I understand that this is an odd time to list a car (Christmas week), so if you cover the deposit, you are welcome to pick up the car anytime in January. Please call for more detail as required.

A show quality Fulvia Berlina will currently run you somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 to $15,000. Given the amount of work needed on this example, I would peg this car somewhere in the $6,500 to $8,500 range. This is a very complete example that could be run on a daily basis with a little TLC or prove a solid base for a concours restoration project.
Lancia Fulvias are not just another car with a pretty face. These cars were champs of the rally circuit in the 1970s, bringing advanced features like a narrow angle V4 engine and front-wheel drive to the scene. Their well-proportioned looks disguise just how small these graceful coupes actually are. These are fairly uncommon classics in the US, but this one for sale in California is a very clean example with a rebuilt motor and retrimmed interior.

This car has been in my family for the past twenty years and was shipped to the USA in 2009 from Rome. Garaged in my country house close to Yosemite. The last photo shown was taken in Perugia, Italy on front of the Villa of Conte Armanni my fathers home town. It's only driven occasionally and has never been registered in America. The car has 57,000 original miles the engine was rebuilt (approx. 10K) in Italy and the interior has also been re-done. The transmission is a five-speed manual. Most of the paint is original but repainted in a few areas. Very little rust on the bottom of the doors although the trunk and floors are in excellent condition.

While they are more technically advanced than their Italian rival, the Alfa Romeo GTV, the Fulvia lags a bit behind when it comes to value. The low to mid $20,000 range is the order of the day for these cars at the moment, where this car is priced. Values have started to creep up in recent years; whether it is due to their rallying heritage or collectors began appreciating them for their looks is no matter. The Fulvia is one sweet Italian classic that you can enjoy on a regular basis.
After perusing through the Lancia website, it's hard not to get the impression that the glory days are over. Forever. With a few rebadged Chrysler products accompanying some smaller rebadged Fiat products, this company has turned into a shell of its former self. It was a company that dominated the World Rally scene for years and embraced innovative engineering solutions. Now, it has limited market reach and is a brand virtually forgotten in North America.
However, the classics will always be with us. This early Fulvia coupe is perhaps one of the prettiest cars that Lancia ever built. It's the car that kicked off Lancia's rallying dominance and you can experience it for yourself with this example for sale in California.

This is a very nicely presented Fulvia, if the color and steel wheels are a bit ordinary. Regardless, it's nice to see an early, simpler one preserved so well. Even the seats look like they have never been sat in. Fully restored with an engine rebuild, there shouldn't be much to worry about going forward. In terms of value, a 1.2 Fulvia like this in top shape should bring between $20,000 to $25,000.
The Lancia Fulvia is perhaps my most favorite Italian classic. Not only does this little coupe have timeless looks and feature impressive engineering, it has a racing resume that puts other cars to shame. While the smart money for an Italian sports coupe of the era may be on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta GTV, the Fulvia is for someone who doesn’t conform and appreciates Lancia’s bold way of going about things. We have for offer a lovely Italian 1969 Lancia Fulvia Sport 1.3S. A very unique car from a styling viewpoint with design details that convert what have been a functional boxy shape to a visually pleasing piece of art. It possesses a roomy cockpit, with excellent visibility and open greenhouse. Even more unique is Lancia’s approach to the engineering of the car. The engine is a rally proven 15 degree V-4 twin cam fitted with twin Solex carbs. The entire engine is located in front of the axle center line providing exceptional handling to this front wheel drive sports coupe. The steering is still light and responsive with no clues that the front wheels are the driven ones. This is a wonderfully nimble, excellent handling car with more performance than expected. A very capable competitor to Alfa Romeo and BMW’s of the period but much rarer. This car has undergone a recent ground up restoration on a very solid chassis. Every component was removed cleaned, serviced, and refinished. The engine starts easily, makes only the proper sounds, and runs well. The gearbox shifts well in all four gears and the brakes and clutch operate properly. Steering is accurate and very light. This is a driver’s car. The chassis was refinished top, bottom, in trunk, and engine bay. The body panels, floor pans and rockers appear to be all original, and are very solid and rust free. The red paint is well applied marred only by some very small parking dings and slight waves in some of the flatter panels. The interior has also been restored. The dash is in excellent condition and is nicely finished. The seats are nicely formed and comfortable. There is room for a six foot plus person to fit comfortably in this car. Even if one could find a solid car to start with, no one could duplicate this car for the selling price.

There’s not much to nit pick about with this car. It’s about one of the nicest Fulvias that I’ve come across here in the US. Anyone looking to add one of these rare, legendary vehicles to their stable should certainly entertain the idea of at least kicking the tires on this one. Unlike the Alfa GTV, Fulvia values are a bit less, mostly attributed to their obscurity in the US market. I’d suspect somewhere around the low to mid $20,000 range is about right considering the condition of this vehicle. The only thing that makes me said is I’m on the wrong coast. This is certainly one of those bucket list cars for me.
The Lancia Fulvia is one of my favorite classic Italian cars. I've promised this car a spot in my dream garage someday If its good, well proportioned looks weren't enough, it's got rallying pedigree to boot. This Fulvia for sale in Maryland represents a good opportunity for someone looking to buy a less than perfect car which they can finish to their liking.
Last of the real Lancias. I do not know a lot about its history. It was bought by a US serviceman in Sicily and spent time in a collection in Wisconsin. I bought it from a man in Pennsylvania who wanted to convert in to a hillclimb car but got distracted by motorcycles. She has a 5 speed trans (I have the original 4 speed box) and an all steel body. The drivers floor was replaced at some point during its life, and I can find no rust on the car. The paint is fresh and the engine is rebuilt with less than 500 miles on it. The bodywork is not show quality but very presentable. The interior is very nice with carpets instead of the original rubber mats. The seats are in excellent condition, although I was told the front seats are not original to the year. I do not know these cars well enough to debate this matter, I just know I like them. They have open sides like buttresses and are comfortable and cool. The headliner has a repaired tear in it about 2" long over the passenger seat. The dash pad has a straight crack in the middle that I have covered with black tape. It does not take away from the overall impression of the interior. She is a tidy daily driver that needs detailing to finish. The main item is she needs door seals, I have the inner ones, a wiper arm and a trunk seal. She is missing one wheel center cap. This is a car that can be driven and detailed by a new owner who has the time and devotion to attend to it.
She drives well as only small bore Italian cars can and as a friend of mine who is a Jaguar mechanic says, she feels like a car that is much more modern than it is. It does not feel like a FWD car.

Items needing attention, that I am aware of. Bear in mind this is a 45 year old car than has not seen regular use, and she probably has others.
Neess door and trunk seals (they are available).
Missing wiper arm.
I have tried to give an honest account of this car. It is not a Honda and will probably need fettleing by an enthusiast who understands the nature of old cars. Having said that she has never failed to start and has not let me down. The mileage on the clock reads 20688 KM. and I had to put in a number for E Bay but I have no idea what the real mileage is. The usual caviot emptor applies. There is no warranty implied or given. She is sold as is, where is. Funds must be cleared before car or title changes hands.
You can get a solid Fulvia these days for around $15,000 to $12,000. I'd suspect with the amount of work to be done, this car will pull somewhere around $12,000.
