1995 Alfa Romeo 164 LS

This square-jawed 164 LS presents the rare opportunity to purchase what is, in my opinion, the ideal configuration of a 164. It starts with the superlative 164 LS platform; introduced in 1994, it brought a 210hp 24V engine, a refreshed interior with - and this is difficult to believe - an updated version of the sea of button 90s HVAC controls, and handsome body-matched cladding - a notable improvement over the grey cladding in 1991-1993 cars. Usually, to upgrade to the 164 Q's 232hp, you have to stomach the swaths of grey body cladding, which have their place, but are by no means subtle. Fortunately for LS owners, it's possible to surpass the Q's 232hp spec with a Squadra chip upgrade and the Q's 45mm intake runners - $860 in kit form. In the case of this car, the chip is already present, so it's just a matter finding some $400 (or less used) 45mm Q runners to get to a claimed 240hp. Not bad for this black tuxedo of a sedan.

With a bit of trepidation and reluctance, I’m selling my 1995 164LS. I bought it here in 2009 from fellow member sjmst. I brought it to the left coast and have driven it about 29,000 miles since purchased. Need to shed this one to make room and some funds to assist the completion of my GT junior redo. Looks like I’m the 4th or 5th owner based on the materials I’ve been provided. Most everything from a copy of the original Monroney window sticker on through the most recent work detailed below is documented. Still in great condition, properly maintained by a AR specialty shop when needed and about as clean as you’ll find. Runs fast and firm, a great grand tourer with a lot of ‘sport’ mixed in. Now to the details (a lot of which I’ll plagiarize from the 2009 trade / sale post from where I purchased…):

Asking Price: $7,200
Miles: ~79,000
Black/Black, 5speed, 3L 24V

Located in SF Bay Area, CA

• 17” wheels w Falken Z1EX 225/45 17’s with ~19k miles on them w/ lots of life left
• Squadra chip
• B&G springs
• Goats repaired LCD HVAC display – all works and legible
• Invisible bra at leading edge of hood – no stone chips there as a result
• One small seam split in FL seat, professionally repaired and unnoticeable
• Headliner redone and flawless
• Original owner manuals, tools, keys, alarm fobs included (never could figure out how to program/reset for the fobs though)
• Original AM/FM/Cassette unit with 6 disc changer in trunk. All operable though the speakers are old and crap (usable and OK with me – I like hearing the 24V music) and should be replaced
• Dash is 10/10 – no cracks, no fading or warping, interior is 9or10/10, exterior

is probably 8 or 9/10 (I’m picky)

Things not working, not working right or maybe in need of attention (most from the PO’s list and have not been an issue, some added by me over time):
• DS front seat heater switch ‘iffy’ – mostly does not work, sometimes the display icon will come on but I don’t sense heat. Never need that where I am so never bothered with it
• Small ‘dimples’ in DS front seat bottom, kind of back right corner. Leather is not jeopardized at all and I think it’s just a normal defect expected in cow hides (PO thought it may be from former owners, keys in pocket sort of thing). I say not.
• Misc minor dings (you’ll see not really noticeable when visiting the photos)
• Bottom cladding – at rear valance – ‘nubby’ paint is wearing off a bit in spots. Not a big issue and with the black material, not too noticeable.
• Small bubble areas where paint is failing / peeling on front bumper. ~1”x2” area and base material is black so not too noticeable but would eventually warrant a respray
• PO says was rearended lightly about a year before I acquired. Professionally repaired with new bumper cover, paint, aluminum strip via PO (I have receipts). Good job, not any noticeable difference from surrounding areas.
• Refrigerant lasts about 1-1.5 seasons per charge. Must be slow leak somewhere but the charge can be done easily at a low cost so has been no big deal to me.
• HVAC controls all work as intended though the link to the heater flap door must be disconnected (under dash?). I’ve read here on the BB kind of a pain to R&R. My solution has been to adjust to my liking based on season by moving the actuator arm behind the false firewall a bit to provide more, less or no hot air to the cabin. Again, I’m in a very mild climate
with minimal seasonal swings so not been an issue.
• Seat height adjustment function does not work well. Teeth or belt(?) stripped or jumped? Front/back/seatback tilt all fully functional otherwise
• PO represented hood repainted at time of adding the invisibra (looks great)
• Trunk lifting gas struts getting tired – need assistance to raise the trunk fully but holds it there once opened
• Stone chip very top edge of L headlight lens.

I think that’s about it for the ‘defects’ etc. list. If not on this list, assume all else in good/very good to perfect condition but feel free to ask on specific things of interest or concern. Now on to things done since purchase:
• Smog check and registration done 1/14. Engine runs cleaner than my newer supposedly low emissions vehicles (Mini, Audi 2L)
• Steering rack replaced w/ properly rebuilt unit. Rock solid (aligned too) 5/14
• Fuel pump inc pump relays, Oil sensor unit replaced 5/13
• Brake Master Cylinder, Clutch Slave cylinder + hose 12/11
• Fan wiring harness, temp sensor, A arms replaced 3/11
• Plugs + tune, RR window regulator replacement, O2 sensor, transaxle fluid changed 3/10
• Serpentine belt, T-belt, bypass hoses, water pump replaced 3/09 (@ 50,100mi).
That’s about it. A fun car that gets smiles and comments by those both in the know and clueless as to what it is and a very good example of the last year and low volume US spec ’95 164.
Let the tire kicking begin!

The 164 platform is much less prone to rust than the earlier transaxle cars - not that rust should be too much of a concern for a California car like this one. Judging from the photos and description, exterior blemishes seem to be minimal, allowing the eye to focus on the flat surfaces and sharp creases so vital to the handsome Pininfarina wedge. Coming as more of a surprise is the state of the front leather seats, which are in remarkably superb condition, even for a car with relatively low mileage like this. Additional confidence as a buyer comes in the form of a fully repaired and functional climate control LCD screen - a common weak point on 164.

Mechanically speaking, this car is long overdue for a timing belt change; we wouldn't drive it far on the current 6 year-old belt. The belt jobs are expensive on these cars, especially when performed at a shop, so do not consider the rather optimistic asking price impervious to this reality. We'd also be prepared to spend some money on the air conditioning to address refrigerant leak, though it seems that we have a rare instance of a car with functioning A/C that actually does need the occasional recharge - a nice relief from the typical Craigslist seller's refrain. With a fresh timing belt, water pump, and A/C service, this 164 LS offers the rare opportunity to experience a 164 in 1990s condition, saving you 1.21 gigawatts in the process.

This is one seriously clean and dialed in GTV6. The fact that it is a rare Balocco Edition makes it all the more tempting. The price is listed at 19,900 GBP, which is steep for one of these cars. The owner may have meant to reflect the price in USD, so it would be worth verifying, as it is a US car marketed on a British site. The best GTV6s of this era are hovering around the $11,000 to $15,000 mark currently. With its extensive amount of modifications, this would make one seriously cool track day car that you could daily rather easily.

1972 Alfa Romeo 1300GT Junior

One of my favorite Alfa Romeos of all time has to be the 105/115 Series coupes. Styled by Bertone, these cars have crisp lines that have aged well. Add in the twin cam engine, 5-speed gearbox and disc brakes on all four corners and you have a classic that can also keep up well with modern traffic. Most of the cars that made it stateside were powered by the 2.0 liter engine, but other markets got small displacement versions, like this 1300GT Junior for sale in Portugal. This example has been restored and wears a very striking combination of blue over red leather.

This car is priced almost right in the middle of what a Condition #2 and Condition #1 car go for according to Hagerty. There are plenty of 2000 GTVs out there at that price point, but maybe not as freshly restored. These sports coupes are still at a good price point for those collectors who want something a bit more special than the run of the mill Fiat but might not have a Ferrari budget. For me and many others, these coupes hit the sweet spot of the collector market.

1994 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce Commemorative Edition

With a new Mazda Miata about to be released, it's an opportune time to take a look at one of its forebears: the Alfa Romeo Series 4 Spider. Coincidentally, Alfa Romeo is planning a new Spider based on this new fourth generation Miata. But before the days of platform sharing, we had this car we see here, the last iteration of the Series 105/115 Spider, which lasted for almost 30 years. Quite an impressive run for this modern classic. Even though summer is ending for many of us here on the East Coast of the US, it's not too late to enjoy some top down motoring in what would be the ultimate expression of this roadster: the 1994 Commemorative Edition.

The Commemorative Edition was merely a trim package, with features such as interior wood trim and special badging to celebrate the final run of these roadsters, all of which were produced in 1993 for the 1994 model year. This example is price at the very high end of what you could expect to pay for a Series 4 Spider, with Hagerty listing a Condition 1 Spider at $31,500. Rosso Vinaccia, or wine red, is my favorite color on these Spiders, but this black on tan combination makes for a classy look. For someone wanting the look of a classic roadster with a bit of the modern convenience, there are few better cars than this one.

1977 Alfa Romeo Montreal Targa

It’s rare that a concept car sees the light of day and if it does, the styling cues you’ll see on the showroom floor will differ to varying degrees than what was viewed on the auto show circuit. But, in the case of the Alfa Romeo Montreal, this halo car made it through to production with much of its cache in tact. With a V8 derived from the legendary Tipo 33 racer under the hood, this car was not only a looker, but had speed and sound to go with it. This example for sale in Germany was converted to a Targa, not an option originally available. It looks to be a fairly professional job and offers one the opportunity to take in even more of that raucous V8 soundtrack.

The Alfa Romeo Montreal was introduced as a concept car in 1967 at the Expo 67, held in Montreal, Canada. The first production car was shown at the 1970 Geneva Motorshow using a 2593 cc dry sump lubricated V8 engine with Spica fuel injection that produced around 235 bhp, coupled to a five-speed ZF manual gearbox and a limited slip differential. This engine was derived from the 2-litre V8 used in the 33 Stradale and in the Tipo 33 sports prototype racer. The chassis and running gear of the production Montreal were taken from the Giulia GTV coupé and had double wishbone suspension with coil springs and dampers at the front.

Up for sale is a very rare, well preserved Montreal, which was converted to a Targa by its last owner, who was an engineer. The work on this one of a kind Montreal has been done professionally, with reinforcements in the interior (under console and above rockers). The underbody is untouched in good original condition, (which is unusual for these mainly in Europe and Canada sold cars). Therefore the reinforcements are relatively easy removable, if you wanted to put the car back in its original condition. This car comes out of an estate. We have documentation & history from the previous owner, such as design sketches, photos and invoices. The original alloy wheels and air cleaner are not installed, but come with the car.

Interior: seats are upholstered in black leather and look almost like new. One missing switch in the dashboard, which was also covered with leather. Door panels due to work on the e-windows removed but will be installed before a new owner gets the car. Generally the interior is in very good condition.

Paint: excellent except for a few small marks and scratches. I would give it a strong 8 out of 10. Original color was metallic brown and the Alfa was sanded down to bare metal before the green respray.

Body: near perfect condition, seemingly without any former accidents and no rust repairs. A small tiny rust spot in front of the rear wheel, otherwise no rust. Correct gaps, no, or minimal dents. The Targa roof can be stowed in the trunk. The underbody is very good, original and rustfree.

Mechanical: it all seems to work fine apart from windscreen wipers. The electric windows are a bit slow. The engine runs good, transmission shifts well. The car hasn’t been driven for some time, so the brakes could be overhauled. But don´t get me wrong, generally the mechanics are in very good condition. This Alfa drives very nice.

Other: Chrome and stainless steel bumpers are good, could be partially polished. The tires have a lot of profile. 90% of the rubber seals are excellent.

Legal: who bids agrees to the following: Our regular sales and withdrawal conditions for our new items are excluded for this article, since it is a used, 37-year-old vehicle, in which defects may be present. Sold as is, no guarantee or warranty of any kind, full payment and collection within two weeks after the auction ends. Place of jurisdiction is Hamburg Germany. We reserve the right to end the auction anytime, since the vehicle might be offered in other media. Deposit US$ 600 with PayPal for foreign buyers within 48 hours, balance: bank wire or cash. To use our Los Angeles or Ft. Lauderdale based business partners might be an additional option for the transaction, but will cost a fee of USD 500,00

Despite our detailed description, it makes sense to look at the car and test drive it. Of course you can also send an inspector. We are experienced with shipping/importing cars from the US and offer free delivery to the nearest port. For more detailed information please call +49-40-6424272 or cell +49-172-411 1891. Email might not be answered on time, since I am traveling until 8/14. In case it sells to the US, we can help with information of an US buyer, who imported his Montreal from Hamburg.

We have good feedback as a classic car dealer and Mustang shop in Germany. See http://www.classicdriver.com/en/article/cars/carmania-hamburgs-mustang-specialist or www.carmania.de

Conclusion: the previous owner was certainly an enthusiast who has realized his dream of a Montreal on an excellent base vehicle to start with. Looking at the near perfect body and underbody, the 63,903 km (39,000 miles) might even be original. This is a true Italian sports car with a nice revving 2.5 L V8 engine, inherited from an Alfa race car. The rarest and fastest Alfa Romeo production car of the 70`s. More worth and greater investment than the Giulias and GTV´s. In March Gooding & Co sold a Montreal for USD 176K!! It gets harder to find a Monti in good condition for the price I am asking. For more detailed information please call +49-40-6424272 or cell +49-172-411 1891.

Good luck bidding

A Montreal is not the Italian classic you should be eyeing if you are a beginner to the game. The fuel injection system on these cars is notoriously complex to tune, and many bespoke parts can be hard to source these days. Around $40,000 to $60,000 is the meaty part of the value curve for these Alfas at the moment, with exceptional ones bringing a bit more, of course. With a respray and targa conversion, a lot of this car's originality is lost, which is no doubt reflected in this car's lower price. If a regular Montreal isn't unique enough, with a bit of fettling, this targa would make a nice weekend runner.

1991 Alfa Romeo 164S – REVISIT

Back in the 1990s it took a special kind of person to buy an Alfa Romeo 164. With Alfa Romeo on its last legs in the US market, they started offering this new front-wheel drive sedan in 1991, just as Lexus and Infiniti were heating up with their smaller offerings, BMW was about to unleash a new 3 series sedan and Acura came up with a new five-cylinder luxury sedan, the Vigor. All of the above offered better reliability and a wider dealer network, but for those wanting the verve of an Italian car, only the 164 would do. And for those wanting just a bit more than the standard 164, the 164S was on tap for the sport minded individual. We featured this car back at the end of 2012 and it is back up for sale for Alfisti looking to sate their appetite until the new, promised offerings from Alfa Romeo make their way stateside once again.

The below post originally appeared on our site November 12, 2012:

Oftentimes a car manufacturer will come up with different names for the same vehicle based on the demographics of the market in which the car is being sold. Some examples include the Alfa Romeo Milano, which was known as the 75 in its home market and the Fiat Strada, which was called the Fiat Ritmo elsewhere. Alfa Romeo had a conundrum on their hands when they introduced the 164 sedan in 1990. As some may be aware, there are homophones in the Chinese language that denote certain sayings. In Chinese, the 164 meant "all the way to death." Fearing a PR disaster, Alfa Romeo changed the badge on the trunklid to 168, which roughly translated to "all the way to prosperity." A small, relatively painless change in order to avoid scaring off potential customers. There's no way of telling how this 168S got this badge here in the US market, but it appears from the Carfax report that this was a simply badge swap by the owner.

TThe 164 Quadrifoglio Verde (badged as the 164 QV) was available from 1990-1992 as the top of the range model. It featured an extended front spoiler, deeper side-skirts and a deeper rear apron. Inside, the 164 QV featured sculpted sports seats and mechanically the car featured an up-rated 3.0 12V V6 and adjustable damper settings.

The story of the 168 in Hong Kong is unique in Alfa Romeo history, and has a lot to do with the Chinese belief in the significance of numerology and outright superstition. Even in modern Hong Kong society, these beliefs continue to thrive, and while not every Hong Kong resident may personally believe in unlucky numbers, they are almost universally known by nearly everyone.

As is illustrated by the 164, in some Asian societies, the relationship between certain groups of numbers can be highly complex and go unnoticed by most Westerners. In the simplest terms, for example, the number 4 in Chinese is nearly synonymous with the word for "death." Thus, different combinations of numbers can represent different things: some lucky, some prosperous, and, as Alfa Romeo soon discovered, some which could profoundly affect sales of their cars.

In the Cantonese dialect, which is prevalent in Hong Kong, 164, when pronounced as a phase, literally means "the more you go the more you die." This had immediate and obvious meaning when taken in the context of an automobile. Alfa's Hong Kong-savvy sales representatives made an unprecedented move and quickly cabled Fiat management for permission to substitute the much-maligned 164 emblem with one now marked 168. The number 8 is perhaps the luckiest in all of Hong Kong as it is similar to the word for prosperity and wealth.

Therefore, what was originally one of the worst rear insignias imaginable instantly became one of the best: 168 means "the more you go the wealthier you'll be." The Alfa 164 was always a great sports sedan to drive but the "S" version offers even more enjoyment. In all ranges the car offers excellent performance and pulls very strong and without hesitation.

Driving the Alfa is really a pleasure. There are no signs of mechanical issues and there is no noise in the drive-line. The clutch is excellent, the transmission shifts very well, the synchromesh gears are excellent (even at higher speeds) and the car is fitted with new set of Falken Ziex 195 65R 15 91H tires and original wheels. The car steers straight, stops straight and has excellent brakes. An inspection of the underside of the car is clean and free from rust and any signs of previous repair or accidents. We encourage a review of the photos as the old adage "A photo is worth a thousand words" clearly applies in this instance! All of the electrical components are fully functional.

The trunk and engine bay are very clean and consistent with the condition of the car's exterior and interior quality and the original Alfa insignia mat is in place and in very good condition. Under the mat are the properly secured spare tire, wheel and the cars original jack.

We often times receive questions that go something like: "Does the car really look as good as it does in the photographs"? The answer in this case is yes. This car is a very attractive example of the difficult to locate 164 S Alfa Romeo with most desirable 168 badge. Perhaps most important, this is an opportunity to own a truly unique and original Alfa 168 S that offers great handling, looks and performance at a very attractive price.

It's nice that such a detailed history was given on the 164 by the seller, but little in the way of this particular vehicle's service and ownership history has been provided. Even though it has somewhat high mileage, it certainly looks to be a fairly honest 164. I was always a fan of these S models in red with the contrasting gray cladding and the tan leather has a rich look about it that few new cars these days can match.

1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia TI Super

In the 1960s, a new genre of vehicle took hold, the sports sedan. Cars like the Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 with its brutish V8, BMW 2002 with its entertaining chassis and available advancements such as fuel injection and turbocharging and Datsun 510 with its Japanese reliability and sharp lines. Then you had Alfa Romeo, with it’s Giulia sedan. Favored by Italian police, this sedan offered a cracking twin cam engine and rear mounted gearbox for optimal performance. This 1967 Giulia TI Super is for sale in Washington state isn't perfect but would make a great driver or base for someone looking to take this car to the next level.

Selling a very nice 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super TI for a client. The car is virtually rust free, and would appear to have been a West Coast car all of its life. Well cared for and restored by its previous owner, was stripped to bare metal and what small amount of rust there was in the body was cut out and new metal welded in. Body work is very good but not perfect, some waves in the bottoms of the doors, if you look carefully... Very Good but not show quality base coat clear coat paint (PPG paint system was used).

This is a very decent old car that could use some additional tidy up and the only thing that does not seem to work is the speedometer, not really sure why. The car drives well and looks good certainly show able but not a show car. Great driver grade restoration...

The 1750 cc not original engine was rebuilt by the previous owner and runs very well. The front suspension appears to have new parts in it and it drives tight. Professionally rebuilt steering box has been installed. Owner rebuilt engine and gear box.

Rebuilt brake calipers (all 4) also with new pads

New factory exhaust from headers back

New professionally installed correct upholstery from Italy on seats

Door panels are all original and in good condition.

Top of dash was re wrinkle finished as was the instrument pod

New professionally installed headliner

New windshield

New gaskets front and rear windshield

All new door gaskets and trunk gasket

New carpet

New tires Bridgestone Ecopia 185 65 15 on freshly powder coated rims

New side marker light lenses

New Tail light lenses

Nicely Re chromed front and rear bumpers

Please call if you have interest or questions I am more than happy to answer any and all questions. Jim 425 238 5317, please remember I am on the West Coast so reasonable hours please. Should you get the message please leave your number and I will return your call at my earliest convenience.

More than happy to help arrange shipping to anywhere in the world, if you need or want me to get shipping quotes for you, I am happy to do that. I would remind you that shipping cost will be that of the new owner, and the car must be paid in full before leaving in verified funds. Please make sure you have your wife's permission and funds in place before bidding. Not really interested in hearing yet another story from someone who was not prepared to follow through with the purchase. Thanks for taking time to look.

The price for this Giulia is quite reasonable considering the condition. The best Giulia Berlinas tend to reach into the $30,000 territory with the best glancing $40,000. This car is quite presentable and offers a new owner to use without guilt, enabling someone to experience the pleasure of an early expression of the sport sedan.

1989 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde – REVISIT

The 1989 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde we featured back in February is back up for sale. As our friends our friends at BlythBros. can attest, owning one of these cars can provide the owner pleasure and pain. For the days these cars run right, however, they reward you with lots of pleasure. This car is quite presentable, harboring a few issues consistent with its age and easy enough for those handy with a wrench to tackle.

Alfa Romeo often is likened to the heart and soul of the motor industry, producing cars that are sometimes less than rational as a consequence of the pursuit for sheer driving ecstasy. Even their more practical offerings have had an individualistic flair about them, witness this Milano Verde for sale in Vancouver, British Columbia. I was never too keen on these cars when they were new, but after visiting my local auto show, the sharp lines courtesy of Centro Stile Alfa Romeo are a refreshing break from the ho-hum styling of modern day sedans.

This 1989 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde is a lifetime Vancouver BC car. Mileage is approximately 173,000 km. These cars have some well documented design features and quirks, so if you aren't already aware of the history of Milanos it is worth doing a quick read on Wikipedia. This is the top-spec Verde model, with 3.0 L V6, fantastic Recaro interior, body kit, unique instrument cluster, LSD, and ABS. Verdes were quite rare with estimates of fewer than 1,000 being sold in North America during their three year production.

In general the condition of the car is good. Paint shows a few small marks. The grey trim on the sides and spoiler is the weakest point on the exterior and would benefit from fresh paint. There is one rust hole in the rear passenger wheel well, visible in the passenger door jamb (common area). There are no other rust areas. The interior is decent with the exception of the bottoms of the front seats which show wear but no holes. The headliner is sagging. The wheels have some scuffs but are straight and bend-free. Tires are getting older but have decent tread. Glass is original and good. These issues noted, the car cleans up very well and turns heads at most car meets.

Mechanically the car is good to very good, with details listed below. As can be seen in the photos, the car has not been freshly detailed but photos represent its normal state, e.g. tidy but not spotless. This car has benefited from quite a bit of attention while under my care.

Maintenance in the last two years
- Transaxle mounts (3) replaced
- Rear calipers, rear wheel bearings, and brake flex lines replaced
- de Dion bushing (poly) replaced
- Watts linkage bushings (5) replaced
- Timing belt, tensioner, water pump, aux belts, and associated seals replaced
- Clutch master and slave cylinders replaced
- Steering rack replaced
- Caster bushings replaced
- Front roll bar end links replaced
- Air inlet box, inlet hose, and MAF restored
- Floor mats replaced
- Oil pressure sender replaced

Other good stuff
- The Alfa 'Busso' has been described as one of the best sounding motors ever built. It is glorious.
- Set of 5 @ 15x7 Fondmetal basketweave alloy wheels with centercaps included with sale
- Aftermarket headers installed (brand unknown)
- OEM first aid kit included
- Box of random small spares included

Quirks (besides the well documented ones from the factory)
- ARC panel has blinky lights for brakes, oil level, brake lights and side-marker lights (but all reported functions do actually work correctly)
- Intermittent wiper setting works intermittently
- Shifting between 1st and 2nd needs a slight pause
- Limited range on the sun-roof due to the sagging headliner (works properly otherwise)

Issues
- Front passenger side window motor/regulator doesn't work reliably
- ABS warning light won't go out, and in the past pedal feel changes after a drive longer than one hour. I've had this checked at two mechanics and they haven't found a fault. Brakes work fine and the warning light could be due to a failed ABS sensor (which is no longer available). A spare ABS pump/accumulator, reported to be working, is included with the sale should buyer wish to troubleshoot further.
- Two small oil leaks present under the motor, generally only occur if the car is parked on a slope.

If you are reading this add from the USA, price is in CAN$, and the car is 25 years old so per previous experience import to the US is easy. Information is available on your government websites.

A lot of the major mechanical points have been addressed on this car. There are a few remaining issues, but nothing too catastrophic as to deter those handy with a wrench or friendly with a good mechanic. Those who have driven these sedans know what a great drive they are. With a throaty V6 and rear-mounted gearbox, it allows this car to stand out with performance rarely seen at this price point. These are cars that are certainly worth preserving, as they are the last Alfas designed before the Fiat takeover and the last rear-drive sedans from the company to this day.

1976 Alfa Romeo GTV

There's got to be a joke out there somewhere dealing with low mileage Alfa Romeos. I mean, if they're not running it must be pretty easy to keep the miles in check, right? But of course, at this point in the game you're not likely to be looking at a nearly 40 year old Alfa Romeo as your primary transport, so dependability probably isn't high on your list. What may be, though, is that the pre-GTV6 4-cylinders are attractive, light, reasonably practical, fun, and above all, inexpensive when compared to some other classic Italian cars. Just take a look at this 1976 GTV:

This car certainly ticks the right boxes - it's original minus the refreshed paint, is claimed to be rust-free, has some recent maintenance performed and low miles. There aren't too many 1970s era bright red Italian cars that you can jump into in this condition for a reasonable amount, but this is sure one. With a "Buy It Now" price of only $11,500, this car is priced aggressive considering the GTV market has been on the rise recently. To me, this is a car that can be bought on a very modest budget, enjoyed on the weekends and occasional show, and will appreciate if kept in good condition, all while bring you smiles and stories along the way. Isn't that what Alfa Romeo ownership is supposed to be about?

1995 Alfa Romeo 164LS

Almost 20 years have passed since the last Alfa Romeo that was affordable to mere mortals was sold in the US. Sure, there was a brief comeback with the 8C Competizione and new models are set to reach these shores soon, but it seems like us Italian car car enthusiasts have been waiting a lifetime for this to happen. If you are impatient, why not sample one of the last new Alfas we had access to, the 164 sedan? For sale in Georgia, this final year 164LS 5-speed manual is about as close to new as you can get, with just over 25,000 miles on the clock.

One owner 25,000 miles, very clean and nice, Fresh timing belt and water pump. Clean Carfax. A great find with very low miles that is in very nice condition.

Versus the rear-drive Milano & 75, the 164s seemed to be valued just a little bit less, no doubt due to the fact that some hardcore Alfisti deride the front-drive architecture shared with Fiat, Lancia and Saab. This 164 truly pushes the envelope of what is possible when it comes to values currently, but it's doubtful you'll find one with less mileage anytime soon. For someone who has to have Pininfarina styling, a sonorous exhaust note and just needs to be different, there are few better luxury sedans with which to do it with on US shores.
