1959 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Touring

Following close on the heels of this week's 2600 Sprint, we present this early 2000 Spider Touring. Alfa Romeo hasn't really touched this segment of larger cars since perhaps the Alfa 6 sedan, and even then, they didn't offer a coupe or a convertible. Today, rumblings of a new Alfa Romeo GTV emanate from FCA, and for that we are grateful. While the new GTV will be positioned as a more modestly-sized coupe, when compared to Alfa Romeo big coupes of yore, we believe that it will size up just fine.

We read that the 2000 engine, displacing 1975cc in actuality, is similar enough to the 1900 engine to share a common head gasket. What is interesting about this is the fact that the 2000 engine was not derived from the 1900 engine through increased stroke; rather, the bore was increased by 1.95mm, with stroke remaining the same. Both variants are torquey undersquare designs - it wasn't until the 2600 6-cylinder came out that the big Alfas would see power from a snarly oversquare powerplant.

Looking at the underside photos of this example, we would wager that you won't find another 2000 in this shape anytime soon. The flat black finish on the underbody and the rear axle is appreciated in a world where all too many restoration shops go nuts with the glossy black paint. Upgraded springs are pictured, as are aftermarket shock absorbers. These are an interesting addition to a car meant more for high speeds - up to 110mph - but likely result in an improvement in body control.

Based on the high price tag and the level of restoration, this car is destined for a lot of sitting around, which is unfortunate but understandable. We like the concept of the big-body Alfa with the big engine. It doesn't quite bridge the gap between a Giulietta and a contemporary Lamborghini or Maserati, but the effort is appreciated. We highly recommend this example for the collectors, and we'll keep our eyes peeled for a driver example to share in the future.

2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport

You all knew the day would eventually come. Mercedes-Benz, then BMW, and finally Porsche were all able to move solidly into the black with the introduction of their SUVs, and for better or worse, Alfa Romeo must follow suit. The seriously positive side is that, in spite of Alfa (and FCA, if you ask us) having no experience creating a competitive performance SUV, they seem to have hit the mark on their first attempt.

Modern reviews of the Stelvio in both base and Quadrifoglio form are overwhelmingly complimentary of the driving dynamics. From ride comfort to handling and steering, the Stelvio drives as a slightly-heavier Giulia. This should come as no surprise, since the two wisely share most of their mechanical components. The downside is that the infotainment and electronics are also shared, and those systems have received a bit of negative attention.

The combination of the MultiAir 2.0L turbocharged FCA GME-T4 4-cylinder engine, 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, and AWD combine to keep the Stelvio competitive in its class. Additions such as aluminum body panels to keep the F/R weight distribution at 50/50, and the carbon fiber driveshaft, as well as low drag coefficient of .32 keep the Stelvio interesting.

Today's Stelvio represents the top of pricing for a 280hp model; another $20k or so nets you the 503hp Quadrioglio model. Somehow, we expect that whoever buys this example will be paying quite a bit under MSRP. Though we don't love the price, the Verde Visconti green paint is a welcome offering, and we'd gladly pay the up-charge for the added style. We would have specified a tan or brown interior, but we do also like the yellow brake caliper finish. If you like the color combination as much as we do it, why not support the struggling Alfa Romeo brand with a purchase?

1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint

Less common than their Giulia successor, the Giulietta series proved Alfa Romeo's competence as a mass-manufacturer of automobiles in the 1300cc class. We're featuring the 2+2 coupe Sprint model today, but a Berlina and Spider were also offered, in addition to some more limited production body styles. In 11 years of production, starting in 1954, over 177,000 Giuliettas were produced in its various forms.

Competitive features at its time were in no short supply on the Giulietta. The unibody chassis met the road through a double wishbone front suspension, with a live axle at the rear. Large, finned aluminum drum brakes managed stopping at all four corners. And, the aluminum dual overhead cam hemi 1300 engine made respectable power for its displacement.

This Sprint has been in California for over 20 years. As you can see this Alfa is not finished and is stored in a garage, but most of the work has been completed. Interested parties can come see the car before purchase. It also has a clear California title and it's under the previous owners name. Buyer is responsible for transportation of the vehicle.

Prices for these Giuliettas vary due to differentiating factors that we don't have the knowledge to point out. Will say that $38,000 is about average for a driver condition Giulietta, based on observation. This example was completely stripped down to its rust-free base and then repainted, which would give us peace of mind, were we to be pursuing it. The interior also appears to be reupholstered in the original style. Unfortunately, the seller has installed a non-original engine, but the original will be supplied in the sale. On the plus side, it would seem that the seller has upgraded the engine to a Veloce unit, based on the presence of two carbs. That's worth some extra power.

This car occupies the space between an original survivor and an unrestored driver. In our opinion, this makes it a prime candidate for loading up with miles. Anything that's been refinished before can be refinished again, free of guilt. And thankfully, most of the car has been refurbished and is ready to go.

Package Deal: 2 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTVs

We've seen some odd listings this week. First, there was the Fiat 500 Jolly conversion service listed as a 2015 Fiat 500. Now, we have people casually listing a parts car right alongside their runner on eBay. We see that a bit on Craigslist, where it's pretty normal, but it just seems off on eBay.

And, what a pair we have here. See, the cars both require new rear ends. So the parts car doesn't really solve the problems on the running car. The main listing, the silver example, has a salvage title, having seen some damage to its rear end. The damages were clearly not professionally repaired, which has led to its deteriorated condition seen in photos today. The maroon parts car, on the other hand, was never repaired, having experienced very similar damages.

Fortunately for prospective buyers, the parts car seems to have been refreshed within 10k miles of its demise. The seller doesn't state the nature of the engine work, but it was likely rebuilt, if we had to guess. The clutch and exhaust were also replaced at that time.

So, we have two cars' worth of GTV driveline and not a single body worth swapping them into - simply, that is. The silver car could be brought back to health with some involved bodywork, as could the maroon car, theoretically. Either way, we don't see the numbers adding up to the seller's asking price, for us at least. Maybe someone out there with some home body repair skills will take on these two ailing GTVs. We certainly hope that they both don't become parts cars.

1993 Alfa Romeo RZ

The Alfa Romeo RZ has always been an acquired taste - presently, and when it was introduced in 1992. See, despite production of the 278 examples of this roadster ending in 1993, it wasn't until three years later, in 1996, that the lot was finally sold off. Today? Well, for a car that seems to be mechanically equivalent to a nice Milano Verde with upgraded camshafts, they demand around 10 times the cash! For perspective, keep in mind that the RZ sold for over two times the list price of a 164 when new.

That isn't to say that the RZ isn't worth some consideration. Unique thermoplastic body panels, though not dead simple to tool up, allowed for more palatable pricing in the lower production run in both the SZ and RZ. And, compared to a Milano Verde, the engine features a further 27hp by means of improved camshafts, a bump in compression ratio, and altered engine management. To that, add the Alfa 75/Milano IMSA style suspension, with helper coilovers at the front to supplement the torsion bars, as well as coilovers in the rear. Rubber bushings were replaced with stiffer materials, and the DeDion nose bushing swapped out for a spherical bearing.

RZs weren't available in many configurations; colors were limited red, black, yellow, and silver. Red seems to be the most common color for the coupes, while yellow fits the roadster a bit better. Inside, the Momo steering wheel is similar to a Montecarlo, but with an added pad around the horn button. We can attest that these look excellent when added to a GTV-6, and expect them to look just as good in an RZ.

While we would have a tough time talking ourselves into an SZ coupe over, say, a GTV-6, we can see the appeal in the RZ. It's the only transaxle roadster that Alfa produced, as well as the only factory Busso V6 roadster from the marque. Sure, it was a bit underpowered for 1993, but the overall experience is likely more than sufficient for a weekend roadster with some seriously edgy bodywork. We'll forgive a lot for that Busso exhaust note!

1993 Alfa Romeo RZ Trophy Race Car

Here's a race series that we had never heard of: The Zagato Trophy. This 8-race series honored the 75th anniversary of Zagato in 1993. 13 cars were constructed for the series, with Alfa Romeo even offering a 25% discount on the price of a new SZ/RZ to be entered into competition.

The series cars were not drastically altered from their original state. Changes were limited to a kit, which included revised shocks and springs, a racing exhaust, upgraded brakes, revised engine management chip, and a balanced engine. As for rolling stock, the cars rode on three-piece OZ Racing wheels shod in Pirelli slicks. And finally, each car featured a roll cage, 4-point racing harnesses, a fire suppression system, and the requisite tow hooks for track recovery.

Based on the scant information on these cars, we believe that the RZ pictured was prepared fro Duilio Truffo to enter into the race at Monaco. Preparation time was so precious that the racing exhaust was never installed, leaving the catalytic convertor installed for the race. In spite of the this disadvantage, the yellow car, whose graphics were designed by Ercole Spada, managed a third place finish.

We're delighted to have come across the Zagato Trophy. The racing liveries, such as Martin Dawes getup on this RZ, seem at home on the decidedly homely Zagato specials Likewise, the SZ and RZ look at home on the racetrack. $93k is steep for what amounts to a rebodied Milano Verde, but the it's right in line with the market for these. Even if the Zagato is a forgotten series in international racing, it adds a neat bit of history without compromising the car much at all. If anything, it's a nice excuse to take an RZ to the track without reservation!

1987 Alfa Romeo MIlano Gold

Milanos, unlike Giulias, have managed to stay off the radar of collectors, for the most part. Sometime a Verde will go crazy on the online auctions, but othewise, a Milano Gold, such as this example, will usually go for sane money.

The Gold was a step above the silver base model. This particular example is not listed as a Gold, but we suspect that it is, based on the lack of foglights and sunroof, but existence of a passenger-side mirror. Peaking through the window, we can barely make out the telltale corduroy seats of a Milano Gold.

The last of the rear wheel drive Alfa's from imported to the US before they were bought out by Fiat. This car is a great driver with just a tick over 100k. Very rare "sunfoof delete" so no leaks and rigid body structure. Owned by Alfa enthusiasts and well maintained. Upgrades include Bilstien shocks and performance springs, Ultralegerra wheels with 16in low profile aggressive tires. Recent transmission overhual with limited slip differential. Custom Anza exaust. With near 50/50 weight distribution this car handles line its on rails! Rare find in this condition with low miles and priced aggressively.

Alfa Milano Gold OZ superleggera

We've personally owned a set of 16" OZ Superleggeras, such as the set on this car, and a Milano Verde. Unfortunately, the OZs are gone, having never graced our trusty Verde. This car wears the wheels well, but we can't say that we regret selling ours. 16" wheels are tough to pull off on a Milano, after all. Our oddball Lugaro 16" wheels barely manage the task.

We're sold on this particular example. How often do you see a slicktop Milano for sale, let alone one with a rebuilt LSD transaxle? Add in the performance springs and Bilstein shocks, and the car has some real potential. As always, play it safe with the timing belt and inquire about rust. If the car checks out, the next owner should be quite happy with what they've purchased, especially if they do better than the current $3,800 asking price.

1967 Alfa Romeo giulia Super 2000 swap

How about a Giulia Super for Milano Verde money? Today's Giulia represents the bottom of the market for driveable Giulia Supers. Being a later car, this Super was built in Arese, just like its transaxle descendants such as the Giulietta sedan and the 75/Milano.

We are no experts in these Type 105 cars, but we will state the obvious: these are the most competent sports sedans of their era. Start with a unibody chassis, add a suspension derived from their sports cars, a twin-cam aluminum powerplant, a five-speed manual, and an aerodynamic body, and the result is 10 years ahead of any contemporary models from BMW. Even today, aside from rust issues, you won't find a more robust and capable classic sports sedan.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super

Originally Born a 1967 Giulia Super 1600.

This is a runner/driver/bomber type car. The brakes need some fiddling around however. I just had Power Brake Exchange restore the booster and master, though its still being finnicky. It also, hasn't been properly tuned yet, after having the fresh head put on. (Though the valve job is good!)

This has a Spica injected 2L.

The exact mileage on the cluster is unknown at the moment. The listed mileage was my best guess.

I also just had the head worked on, as the spark plug holes were stripped. The head has new valve seals, is faced and has time sert spark plug holes, never to be stripped again.

I painted it just to make it one solid color. The paint job is pretty BAD and the body work (whoever did it before me) isn't great either! If you want a perfect Super this is NOT your car. I just wanted the car one color, as it had really bad paint initially.

The most significant rust (it is an Alfa after all) is between the rear shock tower in the trunk area, as pictured. There are holes in the metal, however it isn't structural there.  I have a replacement piece, that was cut out of a good car, if you care to replace it. There are a few small dime size holes in the floor here and there, but no real rocker rust.

I have the front and rear bumpers.

This ad is for the car alone.  If you'd like a LOT of additional parts for additional money, we can talk after a deal is made for the car.  I have a spare engine, transmission, interior, gauge set, doors, hood, trunk lid.... the list goes on! You can't get some of this stuff anymore.

I have another Super being restored that is demanding large payments at the moment, which is forcing the sale of this.

Let me know if you have any questions or would like additional pictures.

The car is for sale locally, and I reserve the right to end the auction if it sells locally.

I'd be happy to work with a shipping company, should you want to purchase it and have it shipped somewhere.

The owner of this car is forthcoming with the issues, particularly bodywork. He's done a decent job of at remedying the numerous problem areas using patch metal, but this remains a very rough car. Numerous rust holes still exist in the sheetmetal. The upside is that the seller has documentation of his bodywork, from stripping the car down all the way to filling and repainting.

The 2,000 swap should be pretty entertaining, especially given the rusted lightweight bodywork. We've seen Giulias more far gone than this, and it is a driver, so the price is actually pretty appealing. Now, will you end up spending more in the long run by getting this car back into presentable shape? More than likely, the answer is yes. But, that hasn't stopped anyone before!

The rebuilt transaxle and DeDion service have less than 200 miles of use. Sounds great, turns heads, lots of smiles. Clean clear title. Fun car, not perfect, very cool.

A massive, if not intimidating list of recent work accompanies the car.  With multiple track days under its belt and an Alfa Romeo racing heritage in its DNA, this art car should be good to go for many years to come.  We won't ask why it needed new door handle gaskets - and it's really none of our business - but we wouldn't be surprised if the explanation isn't printable on our pages; seller, we salute you!

1978 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT

Spare us, dear commenters, for we know not what we type, or something.  Wouldn't a 1978 Alfetta GT actually be a Sprint Veloce?  We're not entirely sure - maybe some 1978 cars made it out before the Sprint Veloce moniker took effect.  We'll trust the car's owner's manual on this one.

We'll admit that we got overly excited when we saw the engine bay of this one.  Individual air filters leading to carbs?  If only.  The car actually maintains its original SPICA fuel system, for better or worse.  The local Alfa expert swears by a functioning SPICA system, and we can see the advantages over carbs.  But, here we were, excited at what we thought we carbs.  The appeal transcends logic, we guess.

Rust is the big question on this car.  Windshield frame, jack points, rear hatch and nearly everywhere else should be inspected before getting one's hopes up.  Assuming that rust is not an issue with this car, we are impressed with the general condition and subtle upgrades.  We see an Ansa muffler poking out from the rear, some shiny long-tube headers under the hood, and handsome 15" Ronal A1 alloy wheels in the wheel wells.  The front bumper looks to be painted to mimic a GTV-6, and the front air dam has a GTV-6 vibe as well.  These cars can be styled into the 80s if desired, and this example makes the jump well.

The low mileage is worth something to potential buyers, but don't expect this car to drive like it came off of the lot unless a lot of rubber has been replaced in the recent past.  We have a feeling that that might be the case, given the general condition of the car.  The asking price is a wasp nest that we'd prefer to leave be.  Ok, fine - it's twice what we'd pay.  That said, we're impressed with this example, and do recommend checking it out.  Maybe the price is a barrier against tire-kickers.  This one is a perfect example to buy and double the odometer count on in short order.
