1995 Ferrari F512M

By 1995, it seemed as if time had passed the Testarossa by, with more organic shapes coming into the sports car mix while the wedge shapes of the 1980s faded away. Nevertheless, Ferrari gave this wide fendered sports car a final send off with the F512M in 1994. With updated styling, exposed headlamps and a slight increase in horsepower, it gave this Pininfarina masterpiece one last shout before riding off into the sunset. This red F512M for sale in Florida is like most F512Ms, in that it has been pampered and covered less than 10,000 miles.

This is one of the most comprehensive ads I've come across in a while. A detailed history such as this is paramount when buying a classic Italian exotic with such low mileage. The last F512M we featured was priced at $167,495 and had almost identical mileage. While most Testarossas have a hard time breaking six figures, it seems the F512Ms are bringing more serious coin. Personally, I'd rather have the original Testarossa, but perhaps the exclusivity that comes with having one of the last of the breed means something to certain collectors.

1995 Ferrari F512M

The mid 1990s were a time of change at Ferrari, as the company began favoring front engined sports cars once again. In 1995, we were witnessing the Testarossa's last stand in the form of the F512M. Only 500 of the "final" Testarossa were produced, this time with exposed headlamps, a revised front bumper resembling the F355, a restyled rear light cluster and power from the 4.9 liter flat-12 upgraded to 440 horsepower. Reviews were mixed with many enthusiasts preferring Pininfarina's original interpretation from 1984. This menacing black example for sale in Illinois has covered under 10,000 miles.

A low mile rare 512M. Award winning ultra clean example we have serviced for many years. The ultimate example in the evolution of the Testarossa. Fresh belt service. All books and keys. A classic for the serious Ferrari collector.

A clean, low mileage, first generation Testarossa will run you between $50,000 to $75,000 or so, so the asking price of over $167,000 for what is a very similar car is a bit hard to stomach, no matter how showroom fresh. True, the F512M is worth more and this car has had its belt service, but some purists deride the styling over the earlier Testarossa and 512TR. Realistically, this car is worth somewhere around $100,000 to $130,000.

1995 Alfa Romeo 164Q

California is a state known for its car culture. No matter your fancy, it's a great place to go looking for classic and modern cars on the used market. Just last week, we featured a low mileage Alfa Romeo 164LS for sale in Pleasanton. Today, here is the sportier Q version of the 164, a clean, one owner example for sale in Pleasant Hill that is allegedly one of the last of its kind to be sold here in the US.

The 164LS we featured last week sold for $9,999. This 164Q has almost the same mileage with a price about $2,000 more. Whether or not you favor the sportier Q over the luxury LS version is a matter of taste. Both this car and the LS have 5-speed manual transmission, which is important for enthusiasts. I prefer the Q. With a little bit of negotiation room, I'd say this car is priced right for someone looking to savor one of Alfa's last forays into mainstream US sales.

1995 Alfa Romeo 164LS

With each passing day, the possibility of Alfa Romeo returning to the US marketplace seems less and less plausible. With a global financial downturn and the demand for new cars waning, it remains to be seen whether Fiat will take the plunge and give American enthusiasts the marque they have so desired for years. In the meantime, I'd be very tempted to enjoy a sedan like this, the 1995 Alfa Romeo 164LS. This was the final year any Alfa Romeo was offered in the US until 2008 when the limited production 8C Competizione came along. This low mileage 164LS for sale in California has the desirable 5-speed manual and looks classy in dark green with tan interior.

The Alfa Romeo 164 was styled by Enrico Fumia at Pininfarina in 1982. The 164 can be seen as the logical extension and successor of the Alfetta, particularly the late-model "long nose, square light." The 164 was the first Alfa to feature extensive use of computer aided design for calculating structural stresses, resulting in a very rigid but still relatively lightweight body. The 164 was the basis of the Type Four platform, which it shares with Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma and Saab 9000. Being the last to reach the market, the 164's body shell was the most aerodynamic of the four, and had a markedly sleeker profile and lower coefficient of drag. In order to permit this design variation, an exclusive front suspension was developed. The 164 was the first of the "new technology" Alfa Romeos, and is the technological and styling basis of all Alfas to the present day.

The 164 also introduced dramatically improved build quality over previous Alfas, featuring galvanized steel frame and various body panels for the first time, ending the most common complaint by Alfa customers about rust problems encountered in older models such as the Alfasud and the GTV. As a top-line saloon, the car proved it to be as a comfortable and sure-footed car, with a distinctively sporting character, consistent with the marque's tradition. In fact, the motoring press of the day found its only fault to be minimal torque steer, particularly in earlier versions.

The 164 was designed to compete in the executive car segment dominated by the German cars. It offered better value for money in terms of technology (having three onboard computers, one for air conditioning, one for instrumentation, and one for engine management; air conditioning and instrument functions shared a multiple-mode coded Z-80-class microcontroller for dashboard functioning). Air-direction within the ventilation system was controlled by a pair of servomechanisms.

The car had some very advanced features for its day, such as automatic climate control and electronically controlled damping suspension (in the top-line Cloverleaf models and 164LS). This suspension actively reduced damping in response to conditions to provide a dynamic compromise between road holding and comfort. The 164 also boasted engines rated among the best in the industry at the time, and the same basic engine designs were used until very recently by Alfa Romeo across its model range.

OVERALL CONDITION

COSMETIC

Having travelled just over 78,000 miles the car is in absolutely beautiful condition. The exterior has the appearance of a considerably new vehicle and the paint, body, trim, glass and other exterior components are in excellent condition. The car reportedly received a VERY high quality repaint in its factory original color and, frankly, if anything the paint quality is equal to, perhaps better than the original paint. There is NO overspray on the trim and the paint is totally flat, free from orange peel or other defects and the car was painted as a "complete" (no partial painting of panels, etc.). The 164LS is striking and the photos accurately reflect its condition.

Alfa Romeo's (and many other vehicles) carried permanent stickers on various panels (fenders, doors, front and rear bumper cover, and rear quarter panels) in order to determine originality and be able to ascertain if any accident damage has resulted in replacement of a panel (s). We look for these "Numbers" not only for the sake of originality but also to ensure that the car has not been involved in an accident. We are pleased to report that this Alfa has the original numbers on the rear quarter panels, all 4 doors, and both front fenders. The front and rear bumpers are free from any damage, significant imperfections or damage. Please take a look at the photographs that show the car was a suburban car and not subjected to the parking realities of big city life.

The exterior trim is all original and in what we often refer to as "California condition." The trim is free from all but the most minor imperfections that can be expected on a vehicle of this vintage, none of which detract from the overall appearance and attractiveness of the Alfa. The glass is excellent, all of the power windows are functional and there are no stars or cracks in the windshield. The mirrors do not show the typical rock chips and the front spoiler is free from the usual major scrapes and damage and in very nice condition.

INTERIOR

The interior on the Alfa Romeo is in lovely condition and shows virtually no signs of wear due to the cars low mileage. There are some signs of patina of fine leather on the driver's side seat but the seat remains totally free from any rips, tears or damage to the seat bolster. This is a rarity with the relatively high bolstered sport style seating found in the Alfa 164LS. The passenger seat, rear seats, door panels, dash, headliner, carpet (covered with carpeted mats) and other interior components are excellent.

The Alfa remains 100% stock including the original, factory installed, fully functional (including automatic retracting power antenna) AM/FM Cassette radio. While the trunk mounted CD player is in place, (refer to photos) it does not appear to be working as a result of disconnected wiring. It may be a simple fix but we have not looked into the issue. The instrumentation is totally stock and, unlike many Alfa's of this vintage, all of the instruments work fine as does the air conditioning, cruise control and warning light system. Note: One of the photos shows the car with all doors open and the 4 door warning lights illuminating along with a round light for the emergency brake.

The automatic air condition system appears to be fully functional due, in part, to a relatively recent replacement of the air conditioning compressor. The LCD digital display readings show only partial numbers at some settings, a common reality with the older 164's. The power sunroof works fine as do the windows, door locks, remote mirrors and fully adjustable electric seats (both sides).

MECHANICAL CONDITION

In a word, excellent. This Alfa Romeo runs very strong and has been serviced by a highly respected Alfa specialist in Southern California, APC, for the previous five years. Specifically, Alfa Performance Connection indicates that they serviced the Alfa from November 7, 2007 when it had 68,118 miles until October 26, 2012 when it had 78,630 miles. The Car Fax records also support this mileage history. Documentation in our file supports their knowledge of the car and the recent repairs and upgrades as follows:

DRIVING THE ALFA ROMEO 164LS

The additional of the professionally installed Squadra and improved Alfa Romeo "Q" intake runners the car is noticeably quicker than a stock 164LS but does not exhibit any negative tendencies. The Alfa 164LS was always a great sports sedan to drive but increase in horsepower adds to the experience. In all ranges the car pulls very strong and without hesitation. The car revs freely and upon hard acceleration there is controllable torque steer due to the front wheel drive configuration of the Alfa. The idle is smooth and even and the car has just had the benefit of a fresh catalytic converter to ensure compliance with California smog requirements.

Driving the Alfa is really a pleasure. There are no signs of mechanical issues and there is no noise in the drive-line. The clutch is excellent, the transmission shifts very well, the synchromesh gears are excellent (even at higher speeds) and the car is fitted with relatively new, matching tires and original "telephone dial" Alfa Romeo wheels. The car steers straight, stops straight and has excellent brakes. An inspection of the underside of the car is clean and free from rust and any signs of previous repair or accidents. We encourage a review of the photos as the old adage "A photo is worth a thousand words" clearly applies in this instance! All of the electrical components are fully functional and the car passed California's strict safety inspection for lights, turn signals, wipers, within the previous week. The car is licensed and registered in California and, of course, has a free and clear California title.

The trunk and engine bay are very clean and consistent with the condition of the car's exterior and interior quality. We often times receive questions that go something like: "Does the car really look as good as it does in the photographs"? The answer in this case is no. In this case, the looks better. Perhaps most important, this is an opportunity to own a truly unique and original Alfa 164LS that offers great handling, looks and performance at a very attractive price.

This 164LS is certainly in good nick. Cosmetically, the only issue I could spot was the clearcoat lifting a bit on the alloy wheels. With the recent timing belt replacement and a long record of service by an Alfa specialist, the new owner should rest rather easy. Even good examples of a late model 164 can be had for well under $10,000 these days. I'd suspect a very clean, well kept 164LS like this would probably fetch somewhere between $6,500 and $8,000 to the right buyer.

1995 Alfa Romeo 164LS

Like clothing from certain Italian design houses, I know that cars like this Alfa Romeo 164 would just fit me better. Even though it shares its platform with the Saab 9000, Lancia Thema and Fiat Croma, the 164 departs from the other three with sharper, Pininfarina styling that provides a nice, tailored look to the executive sedan. This was the last new Alfa Romeo to be sold in the US before the 8C Competizione arrived and this 1995 model represents the final year of the 164 being stateside. Unlike a lot the 164 sedans we've featured previously, this 164LS has the automatic transmission.

This one owner Alfa (last year of production) has automatic transmission, leather/power/heated seats, fog lights, power windows, power door locks, headlight washers, power folding mirrors, factory 12-disc CD changer/tape/AM/FM, power sunroof and air conditioning.

Engine is in good shape, does not smoke, does not leak, nice and quiet. Recently the timing belt was replaced. Transmission feels perfect, shifts without any problems, without delay, and without noise. Suspension is in excellent shape, car tracks nice and straight. There is no evidence of any electrical problems. The exterior is in excellent shape for a 1995. The paint looks original, and there is no rust anywhere on the car. Leather seats, carpet and glass are all in great shape.

Interior of this car is nice and clean. This Alfa has four matching tires with more then 75% tread left, that are mounted on good straight rims. Our mechanics have performed all of the necessary maintenance and have replaced front brake pads. It will be sold with a clear title and it will be sold as-is, where-is.

The 164 looks good in almost any color, but in LS trim, black is a very classy choice for this stylish sedan. At $9,350, this much luxury may seem a bargain, but realistically, this car is worth somewhere between $6,000 and $8,000, even considering the low mileage. If I had the space and extra cash lying around, I'd be willing to go as far as about $8,500 to have a clean, unmolested example of one of these, even if it was automatic. The exhaust note alone is worth the price of admission.

1995 Ferrari 456GT

When you hear the name Ferrari, images of sleek sports cars and racing victories fill the mind. We often forget that this company has also produced some of the finest GT cars to hit the road. Case in point this 456GT. Seldom seen on the roads today, this was a handsome coupe with powerful 5.5 liter V12 backed by a six-speed manual or four speed automatic. This 456GT for sale in Miami is a low mileage example of the touring Ferrari breed that looks stealthy in black.

Prices for these Ferraris have fallen to a point where they are affordable to more enthusiasts, but, of course, that doesn't mean the expensive maintenance has gone away. This car's asking price represents the top end of 456GT values these days. With a recent service and low mileage, however, it does reassure potential buyers by presenting some redeeming value. Given the nature of the beast, some might prefer this car with the automatic transmission, but for me, the six-speed gearbox suits me just fine. It may not have the edgy character of the later F550 Maranello, but this Ferrari is sublime and could still rip your face off if you put your foot in it.

1995 Alfa Romeo 164LS

As Americans wait with baited breath for the return of Alfa Romeo to this market, let's take a look back at one of the very last new Alfa Romeos, besides the ultra limited 8C Competizione, to grace these shores: the 164. With very few sales in its final year in the US market, these cars were not cross shopped by your typical Lexus or Mercedes-Benz customer. Only hardcore enthusiasts needed to apply. Two versions of the 164 were available in its final year; the Quadrofoglio and the LS version, as we see here. The LS was the luxury model of the pair, but equipped with a 5-speed manual such as our feature car, it still made for an involved driving experience. This 164LS for sale in Miami has a low 85,000 miles on the clock and looks the business in black.

1995 Alfa Romeo 164LS

Black on Black 95 LS with 85,000 miles. Asking $4,000. I have had this car since 2004 and all work has been done at Auto Veloce in Miami. The car runs great, its fast and I wouldn't hesitate driving it cross country.

The good:
- The engine is strong with and the car runs fantastic
- New clutch installed last week
- New radiator 9 months ago.
- No overheating issues
- Interior is in great shape
- AC work great.
- New Pioneer head unit can use new speakers.
- All maintenance is up do date.
- Oil change last week.
- New brake pads last week.
- Timing belt around 10K ago.
- No leaks
- No rust

The Bad:
- Needs a paint job along with minor repair to front bumper due to a minor parking lot bump. I have the metal trim piece (its used but its straight).
- Rear windows are stuck. motor or button, I don't know. They used to work until one day they didn't and I never bothered fixing.
- Needs new muffler.

The seller seems very motivated to sell and has been rather transparent about the issues with this car. At $4,000, I tend to think this is good value for a late model 164 with the desirable 5-speed gearbox. This is a car that certainly deserves the TLC that it needs. With a fresh paint job and some minor fixes, this 164 could serve as a classy executive express for many years to come.

1995 Alfa Romeo 164Q

The late 1980s and early 1990s saw a number of manufacturers retreat from the US sales race. Gone were the last two French holdouts, Peugeot and Citroën, and ill-fated attempts at new luxury marques, such as Rover’s Sterling brand and Ford’s Merkur models lasted but a handful of model years. One of the last automakers around this period to leave the States was Alfa Romeo. Having soldiered on for years with only two distinct models, the Spider and 164 sedan, reliability concerns and rising popularity of Japanese luxury brands helped seal the brand’s fate in the face of dwindling sales. The 164 sedan was the only car on offer for Alfa Romeo’s final year in the US market, offered in either LS or Quadrifoglio trim. Few cars were sold that year, and fewer still exist in such good condition as our feature car.

Rare 1995 Alfa Romeo 164Q Sport Sedan, 5-speed manual. Garaged, maintained, in excellent condition. Please look at the detail in the photographs to see the quality of this collectable, rare car. This is the last year of importation for the 164Q model. Only 100 of these were brought into this country. 6 cylinder, 240HP sport sedan. A tribute to Italian engineering. This Alfa Romeo 164Q runs strong, shifts smooth, handles like a dream with only 40,045 miles. This 164Q does have the adaptive suspension with auto and sport mode. This 164Q was a new factory demo driven by an Alfa Romeo Factory Representative, Carmine Lamendola. After 5,000 miles, he decided to buy it for himself and has owned it ever since. He traded in at the same dealership he bought it from and I acquired it from them.

This car has had an amazing amount of work done to it, which should put any potential buyer at ease. Alfa Romeo 164 sedans from 1995 are rare enough, but the Q model with the adaptive suspension and 5 speed manual transmission pretty much guarantees you’ll be the only one on the block, if not the state, with a car like this. When it was new, the 164 never garnered the same enthusiasm with die hard Alfisti due to its front wheel drive setup, but I believe time has been kind to this sedan with its chiseled good looks. At over $10,000, this is very strong money for any 164, as the reserve has yet to be met. Given the exception mileage and condition, I wouldn’t be surprised if we were looking at a reserve closer to $15,000. As most cars which Pininfarina has had a hand in crafting, it has aged well and represents a chance to purchase a nearly new Alfa Romeo without spending six figures on an 8C Competizione.

1995 Ferrari 456GT

Last month, we featured a Ferrari 412 which, from 1985 through 1989, continued the luxury 2+2 tradition for the marque. The 412 was never imported to the US, however, a few examples found their way stateside. In 1992, Ferrari brought back the idea of a front engined grand tourer in the form of the 456GT, which packed a 5.5 liter V12 engine derived from the Dino V6 which produced 436 horsepower. These coupes were offered with either a six speed manual or four speed automatic, which was an anomaly in the days when most Ferraris came with three pedals. Luckily our feature car has the manual gearbox to get the most enjoyment out of this sports coupe.

1995 Ferrari 456GT

When it was introduced, Ferrari’s 456 attracted much positive attention. Since the early 70’s, the company’s 4-place cars were the only front-engined V12 cars, and their appearance was rather conservative and square-rigged. The 456’s dynamic stance and classical proportions caused enthusiasts and critics to make unsolicited comparisons to the legendary front-engined 12-cylinder Ferraris of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and with a 436hp 4-valve V12 and 6-speed gearbox, the 456 provided a level of performance that remains, even today, quite impressive. Indeed, with a top speed near 190mph, the car was the fastest 4-seat production car then available.

This particular example is a freshly serviced car with the desirable 6-speed option in wonderful swatters blue with tan leather. Exquisite exterior with excellent paint and virtually no road rash. Very nice interior with zero dash leather shrinkage. Major belt service just completed by Miller Motorcars. New tires just installed. Interior detailing and stickiness removal. Radiator serviced and window lifters updated. Records to support regular maintenance. Factory 10 disc CD Changer, 3M bra, Tubi Exhaust. Subtle, darker colors such as this hue work wonders for the 456's lines. While more expensive when new than the F550 Maranello, 456 prices have dipped a bit lower than the F550. While this car is roughly the price of a new Corvette, one should always go into Ferrari ownership with their eyes wide open, as maintenance costs for the less well heeled can be disastrous. Barring that, this is a nice example with recent service ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
