With every passing year, a slew of interesting cars become available for import to the US that fall outside of the 25 year law set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. I've had my eyes on the Lancia Thema for a while, but not just any Thema, the one with the 3.0 liter Ferrari V8 under the hood. Even though it was front-wheel drive, this is a piece of exotica revered by those in the know. This Thema for sale in Germany was imported to the country four years prior from Switzerland.
Car is in good condition with little mileage. Carpets in the front should be replaced. Injection lines slightly corroded. Just needs some TLC and movement as it sat for three years in the garage. Sensational engine is good for a lot of fun. In five years, this car will be vintage and guaranteed with high appreciation potential. One of the first of the "nicer" series, only 2300 pieces built. Poltrona Frau full leather interior with Alcantara roof. The car has no technical approval because it was never registered in Germany and was imported from Switzerland four years ago.
It's a risk buying a car of this caliber that has sat for a while and needs mechanical attention. At about $7,800 USD, you're looking at about a $10,000 car after importation and customs fees. If you can keep the repairs to around $2,000 to $3,000, I'd say it would be worth it. The exterior looks tidy and the interior leather and wood is well preserved. Sort the mechanicals and this would be a fantastic sleeper.

Almost $23,000 is a big ask for what is essentially a 25 year old Italian subcompact, but, those who view it that way are missing the point. Consider the recent surge in prices of the E30 BMW M3, another competition marvel of the day. Suddenly this Lancia begins to seem reasonable. These are fast, capable machines that foreshadow Subaru's dominance in WRC and subsequent sales success with the Impreza WRX. With more Integrales finding their way to these shores, parts and service support will no doubt grow, making it just a bit easier to own one of these legendary rally machines.
The affordable Ferrari. Is it just a myth or does it really exist? From the looks of this Mondial Cabriolet for sale outside of Philadelphia, it could be closer at hand than at first glance. It's tempting to think that you could get a fine Italian exotic for the price of a well equipped Honda Civic, but is it wise to pull the trigger?

This 1987 Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet combines the legendary style of the 80's Ferraris with state of the art (for its day) technological innovations and convenient 2+2 seating. That's right! This is a ragtop Ferrari the whole family can enjoy! This car has been pampered. It comes with the original tools, tonneau cover, boot, etc. The car's paint is practically perfect.
The interior is also in exceptional shape. This car is a bargain and needs very little to be a Platinum winning car at any Ferrari show. The 80 year old man who parted with this car so we could have it did not give us the service records. It will come to you ready to roll and should be low maintenance for the coming years. This car is at the end of its depreciation and can only go up in value. Treat this car right, and you can put a Ferrari notch in your belt for the ownership cost of a Honda Accord! This car has the following noteworthy items: 1) The top has had one small tear that was previously repaired. It was done properly and does not detract from the function nor the aesthetics of the top. 2) The rear windows work, but are slow to go up and down. The right rear window needs the help of a finger occasionally to go up. Not worth fixing until it doesn't work anymore (in my opinion).
At $22,000, this is bargain basement as drivable, presentable Ferraris go. It's disconcerting the seller did not get the service records from the previous owner. That leads one to believe there may be something to hide, because how hard would it have been to even make photocopies of the original documents? Buying any Ferrari without some sort of history is a huge risk. Anyone eyeing up a car like this should have it looked over, as there is no mention of a recent service or any maintenance items taken care of. Aside from that, at this price, this car looks very tidy cosmetically, both inside and out.
A high point in Sergio Pininfarina's career was the Ferrari Testarossa, introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1984. The car was a replacement for the Berlinetta Boxer and its name stood for red head in Italian, a reference to the car's red cam covers and a tribute to the Testa Rossa GT cars of the late 1950s and early 1960s. One of the most instantly recognizable Ferraris of all time, the trademark side strakes feeding the radiators and wide rear section made a dramatic styling statement in an era where such brash aesthetics were welcomed. This car is for sale in California and underwent a major service in early 2008.

Upon its introduction in late 1984, the Testarossa stunned the world with its avant garde styling. Long low and wide, the Testarossa appeared even more so thanks to the extensive use of horizontal slatting, a feature that would be replicated both on other Ferraris and on many other lesser cars. Yet beneath these striking features was a surprisingly organic and handsome form that remains as arresting today as it was twenty years ago. Motivated by a new four valve version of Ferrari`s horizontally opposed twelve cylinder engine that made 390hp, the car was quick and made fantastic noises, but was also very plush with leather almost everywhere, including on the rear shelf, headliner, and visors. The trunk is reasonably sized and the car very comfortable and easy to drive, making it an ideal way to cover long distances at high speeds in comfort. Many Testarossa owners use them regularly and there are many owners with cars having covered over 125,000 miles, and even an example with over 200,000 miles!
This particular car has covered just 25,000 miles, and was sold new in California. In the hands of the present owner since 1992, it has enjoyed a single ownership period for nearly its entire life. In January of 2008, at 24,464 (just 1,100 miles ago), a major engine-out belt service was completed by Alfamilano Inc in Los Angeles, California, which totaled $8,610.90 including the replacement of the hood struts, recharging the air conditioning system, and replacing the shifter cover seal to the transaxle. It is current on its service at this time.
The car is in good mechanical order, and runs and drives well. Cosmetically, it is best described as a nice driver, as there are a handful of minor paint and body blemishes about the car, typical of 25 year old automobiles. The interior is very nice, benefiting from the car’s low mileage. The dash exhibits minimal shrinkage, which is common to Ferrari of this era. The front carpets have been replaced with lambs wool overlays. Both the carpeted front storage area, and the engine bay, are in beautiful condition. This car sits on factory wheels, which are in good condition. Included with the sale are the books, tools, jack, bulb set, and records for the Alfamilano Inc. major service.
This is a great opportunity to acquire one of these very neat and important cars. Their astonishing styling still carries tremendous impact, and they are modern, practical, and easy enough to drive to use on a regular basis. This car has been in California for most of its life and represents a great way to enjoy the Ferrari experience as often as possible for the new owner. Moreover, with values of these cars stabilized and are beginning to go up, lower mileage examples such as this one can be a rationally appealing proposition as well.
An average Testarossa of this vintage will usually bring around $55,000 to $60,000, with the best examples glancing the $70,000 mark. Given that one owner possessed this car for about 20 years, this would be a good car to buy. Even though it hasn't covered many miles since the service, time is not kind to any machine of this caliber. A service could be lurking in another few years, the price of which should be factored in to the purchase price.
About a decade after the 308 debuted, Ferrari tried their hand at updating the mid-engine V8 formula and introduced the 328GTB and GTS. The revised model featured a 3.2 liter V8 that allowed mechanics to perform most of the maintenance without having to remove the engine, greatly reducing hourly labor costs. Thankfully most of the wedge shape survived, which was complemented by better integrated bumpers and the interior was upgraded with more modern switchgear. This 328GTS for sale in Southern California was taken in trade on a new 911 and strikes a unique pose in Oro Chiaro (Light Gold).

Gold certainly isn’t a color you see on a 308 or 328 every day. I’m not the biggest fan of this hue, but it is interesting, being outside of the Ferrari norm. Good examples of 328s these days can range from $35,000 into the low $40,000 range. The best examples can bring upwards of $50,000. With this kind of mileage, a service history would be a must. I would hope, given that a Porsche dealer is offering this car, they at least got some information from the prior owner on what has been done. The condition of this 328 looks pretty good and if the maintenance checks out, the asking price of $35,000 is about spot on.
On a visit to New York City a few months ago, I was wandering around the East Village and stumbled across a red Alfa Romeo Milano parked inauspiciously on the street. It's a testament to Alfisti in the US that you still see these distinctive sport sedans on the roads today, 17 years after Alfa Romeo abandoned this market. With a rear-mounted gearbox, inboard rear brakes and near perfect weight distribution, these kind of technical highlights are few and far between in modern day sedans. This non-sunroof Milano Gold for sale in Ohio is one of the best I've seen on the market in the last few years.
For sale is a beautifully maintained and conditioned Alfa Romeo Milano gold version. I am the original owner and purchased the car at Alfa of Columbus. It was serviced by the Alfa dealer while they were still being imported. Since then the car has been driven less than 2,000 miles during the last 20 years. The paint is all original with the exception of the hood which had some acid rain spots before we took delivery. The numbers match, of course, and everything is original with the exception of the tires, brakes, water pump, battery, and exhaust system. The water pump, battery, and exhaust system were replaced a month ago by an Alfa expert in the Columbus area. More than $3,500 was spent bringing these parts back to were they need to be. We have the invoice for these repairs.
We had a walnut Momo steering wheel and matching gear shift knob installed when we purchased the car and still have the original leather wheel and shift knob. We also have the complete shop manual which comes in very handy. Included is a fitted Evolution car cover which has a couple of stains on the lower edge but is in otherwise great condition.
The car runs as strong as the day it was purchased and has to be one of the best examples of this model in the United States. The only reason for selling it is we just purchased an MG TF and have no room for another car. The only problem I can find on the body is a small paint chip and a small bubble on the right rear wheel well which I tried to show in one of the photographs. If I had noticed the chip earlier and touched it up, the bubbling wouldn't have occurred.
This is the last of the Duetta based cars Alfa brought into the US and had the famous deDion rear end with Watts linkage. It allows the car to handle very predictably and runs well going down the road. The car is very well-balanced as Alfa even placed the fuel tank in the center of the chassis for even weight distribution and protection in the event of a crash. (This ain't no stinkin' Pinto!) The rear disk brakes are also mounted inboard, near the transmission and differential for weight reasons. The Italians understand weight distribution in their automobiles. We have placed a reasonable reserve on this automobile as you will not find a better example anywhere. If you are an Alfisti, you know how fun this car is to drive with the wonderful V6 sounds and solid-shifting rear-mounted 5-speed transmission.
This car leaves little to be desired. The paint is exemplary, the upholstery is unblemished and all the maintenance required has been squared away. Quite simply, this is the best Milano you can buy. While the Gold is the base trim level, it is still well equipped for its age. Most Milanos in good nick will trade hands for around $5,000 to $7,000, but I suspect this example will bring closer to $10,000.
With the hot versions of Lancia’s Delta now approaching the 25 year mark, this World Rally Champion is perhaps one of the most tempting Italian forbidden fruits to import to the US. While most are familiar with the four-wheel drive versions, Lancia produced a Delta HF with a smaller 1.6 liter turbocharged engine and front-wheel drive, as we see with this example for sale near Potenza, Italy. These lesser Deltas can be distinguished mainly via their lack of 4WD badging on the rear decklid and lack of air intakes on the hood.

Prices are soaring on these cars.
At about $6,300 USD with around 75,000 miles on the clock, this is a rather inexpensive way to get behind the wheel of one of these rally icons. Everything on this example appears to be in good order, from the straight body panels to the unmarred interior. Granted, you don’t get the thrill of all-wheel drive, but the lack of the extra drive axles may provide some reprieve from maintenance down the line.
The Fiat 126 was a bit of an automotive mash up. Designed as the replacement for the Nuova 500, the 126 debuted in 1972 and was based on that very car's rear engine architecture, albeit with a more up to date body. Produced in Italy until 1979, the 126 had a lot more production life left in it, as it was produced until 2000 by FSM, a joint venture between FSO and Fiat in Poland. This 1987 model for sale in Rome has been fully restored and would make an affordable and unique import subject, as it now 25 years old and legal to bring to the US.

At an asking price of $3,500, you could probably be just under $5,000 by the time you took care of all the importation costs. That's not an insignificant amount of money for basic transportation, but given this car's complete restoration, you would be hard pressed to find a better example of a 126, no matter the country. Imagine the looks you would elicit upon pulling up to your nearest stateside Fiat dealer...
Introduced in 1983, the Fiat Uno was the replacement for the Fiat 127, the first Fiat to use a transverse, front mounted engine powering the front wheels. The Uno was quite a hit in Europe when it was launched and was awared European Car of the Year in 1984. Initially, the car was offered with three petrol engines ranging in size from 0.9 to 1.3 liters, and a diesel was offered a few months after launch. Then in 1985, the hot version arrived. With a turbocharged 1.3 liter engine, the Uno Turbo was the answer to the Volkswagen GTI, Peugeot 205 GTI and Ford Escort XR3, the latter two which were not offered for US sale. As with most hot hatchbacks of the 1980s, Uno Turbos are seldom seen and often clapped out. This example for sale near Milan has been restored and legal to import to the US, with its 1987 registration year.

At a little over $9,000 USD, this is about the maximum you'd ever see an Uno advertised more, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better one. With a little bit of logistics and added cost, this would be a fantastic piece to bring to the US and a refreshing alternative to the GTIs and rice rockets out there in the wild.
When the Lancia Delta was released in 1979, it was a very modern vehicle for the times. However, no one could possibly fathom that it would go on to become the champion in rallying that it was, winning the World Rally Championship six times in a row and setting a record that has yet to be beaten. The 25 year importation rule has vehicles of 1987 or older being allowed in the US at the moment, which is right around the time that the Delta legend began. This 1987 Delta for sale in Tuscany is in good original condition, having covered around 50,000 miles.

I've been watching later model Evo Integrales for sale in Canada and prices for clean examples are hovering in the $30k range. At €8,500 (~ $11,300), this represents a decent value for an early Delta 4WD, even considering shipping costs to the US. I think it would be fun to get something like this to our shores and show up at the next Subaru Impreza owners club. I think it would be warmly received, as this car is, in a way, its spiritual predecessor.
