2010 Ferrari California

We'll admit that the Ferrari California is not Ken Okuyama's best work. And, we think that, more than anything, the retractable hardtop is to blame. Packaging the folded hardtop, its folding mechanism, and permitting some trunk space led to a rear end just too large to work, proportionally. When Ferrari went about refreshing the car into the California T, though, they kept the folding hardtop and involved Centro Stile Ferrari as well as Pininfarina. We'd have just given up the folding hardtop!

Fortunately for those driving a California, the underpinnings are pure Ferrari. You can be certain that wind tunnel testing pays off on the Autobahn, or between LA and Vegas. And, the engine itself is somewhat of a beast. At displacement of only 4.3 liters, the California's V8 makes 453hp - less than the F430 V8 on which it is based, but with a broader torque band, thanks to different intake exhaust tuning and gasoline direct injection.

Compared to the Maserati Gran Turismo Convertible in our recent post, we think this California has a lot going for it. For one, the interior really makes up for the bulbous rear. We prefer our red on the interior of Ferraris, and optioned with the dark silver, this example looks quite appealing.

So, for around $100k, you get a nearly 10-year-old Ferrari Roadster with a tamed F430 engine, a folding hardtop roof, and rear seats for your dachshunds. Seems like a lot of money and a lot of risk for a car that most enthusiasts will give you a hard time for driving. But, we see the appeal in spite of the flaws. If you're in the market for a California, this one could do the trick.

2015 Maserati GranTurismo Convertible

We recently posted a manual Gallardo Spyder and concluded that for drop-top driving, we'd either pony up for a Murciélago Roadster or look for something like a GranCabrio (GranTurismo Convertible in the US). At the half the price of a Gallardo, the GranTurismo certainly offers more than half of the ownership experience. Yet somehow, we don't imagine that the two are cross-shopped often. Understandable.

Maserati followed up the Tipo M138 Spyder with GranTurismo Convertible in 2007, moving from a Giugaro design to a Pininfarina body under the leadership of Jason Castriota. Maserati also saw fit to add a 4.7L V8 to the lineup, improving on the 385hp 4.2L in the Spyder with a stout 444hp in this example. Gone was the dry sump lubrication of the Spyder's V8 and the Cambiocorsa automated manual gearbox from the Spyder.

We like how this car is optioned, especially the nautical color combination. With the light seats, there is at least some hope of leaving the top down while the car is parked in public and returning to a seat of a reasonable temperature. As for the Blu Sofisticato exterior color, it's not one that we see often, and it plays well with the dark blue leather dash and interior accents. The 20" wheels have a subtle trident pattern, but are subdued enough for a car that will, in all likelihood, never make it onto a racetrack.

The F136 V8 is known to be relatively stout, and there seem to be many vocal advocates of the engine on various internet forums. And, we are thankful that Maserati continued with a cloth top instead of moving to a more complicated folding hardtop roof. Yes, they can wear out, but the mechanisms seem to last longer and they don't intrude so much on trunk space. This is certainly a car of occasion, and for those who don't prioritize handling over all else should be plenty happy with the driving dynamics. Now, somebody please liberate it from Florida and take it to some real driving roads.

1990 Ferrari 348 TS

We'll go easy on the listing because 1) we like Ferraris 2) we like seeing them get driven 3) we like Colorado.  Hopefully the first two reasons resonate with the readership, and the Colorado origins at least help justify the coating of dust on the red paint.

300 brake horsepower do not raise any eyebrows in modern automotive circles, but viewed through the lens of 1990, one could do much worse.  We like to view the 348 as the super sports car complement to something like our 1988 Milano Verde, and compared to the Verde's 183 (stock) horsepower, 300 is a very impressive number.  Continuing with the Verde comparison, we like the large, integrated front foglights, the orange gauge numbering, and the Momo Ghibli steering wheel, which we'd love to install on our Verde.

This car has a lot of miles and not so many service details.  Service records and any indication of general condition will be very necessary to even consider the purchase.  That said, a low-mileage example will require a lot of catch-up in the maintenance department, so we are actually quite supportive of going for a high-mileage example such as this.

For those in search of a mid-engined V8 Ferrari in the low $30,000 range, we think that this 348 TS has some potential.  Even better, if the buyer has experience repairing Italian cars.  Parts will be of considerable expense, information scattered, and frustration common, but we think that the juice is worth the squeeze.

1976 Lancia Scorpion

We'll follow yesterday's quintessential Lancia, the Flaminia, with a Lancia begging discussion of its bonafides, the Scorpion.  Introduced to the Lancia lineup following the Fiat takeover, the Scorpion belongs to the Beta line of Lancias, which were Fiat's attempt at extracting profits from Lancia.

No innovative Lancia V6 to be found under the hood of the Scorpion.  Fiat supplied a 1,756cc variant of their Lampredi Twin Cam 4-cylinder, strangled by smog equipment in the US to a meager output of 81hp in comparison to the Monte Carlo's 120hp.  A small consolation - the valve lash is more convenient to adjust than on the Alfa twin cam!  Shims lie on top of the buckets, right under the cam lobes, eliminating the necessity of removing the camshafts to swap shims.

This is a very clean car that is coming out of the estate of one of our Lancia collectors.   He has owned this car for a very long time and took great care of it.   The interior has been redone at one time and is in excellent condition.   It has had a recent high quality repaint done to it and looks incredible.     We just put a battery in it, flushed the clutch system, cleaned the plugs, prepping the car to get ready for sale.  Car does have some fluid leaks, axle seals leaking a bit and some oil leaks on the car.   The a/c compressor has been removed from this car also.  The speedometer and odometer also do not work on this car, and this title is marked as odometer discrepancy  But this is a great looking, very nice, very clean car.   This is one of the nicest Lancias we have had in the shop.

Condition on this example is particularly nice.  Paint and bodywork are spectacular, which reflects the fact that this car was repainted at some point.  The reupholstered interior shows very well too.  Underside photos show that rust has been tended to or hidden very well, although we'll bet on the former.  The engine bay appear neat, and the engine shows a healthy amount of typical oil leakage - nothing to worry about.  We aren't 100% sure, but the engine might be missing a cam belt cover - exposed belt doesn't seem right to us.

The Scorpion isn't the best Lancia ever offered, but this is certainly one of the nicest Scorpions on offer.  Are we out of line to suggest that this one sort of begs for some hot-rodding?  The Fiat Twin Cams can be made to breath fire with proper upgrades.  We'd say that the car even deserves the hot rod treatment, if only to restore it to its rightful 120hp.

2012 Maserati Quattroporte S

Where does reader support stand on the M139 Maserati Quattroporte, erstwhile prowler of upscale suburban mall lots, fine wares cantilevered from the rear axle with nary a protest from its Ferrari F136 Y series V8?  We like em.

Generally speaking, we seek value over rarity in our Italian cars.  Take our Milano Verde - it's sort of rare, but where it really shines is in the way it holds up to a BMW 325is in performance, at a much more agreeable price.  A used Quattroporte, should you posses the optimism to keep one serviced, offers a similar value proposition over, say, a BMW 7-series, or a Mercedes-Benz S-class.  They are easy to find with low mileage and proper service records, their platform origins are much more focused on sporting, their powertrain is beyond reproach, and their styling less conservative.  Best of all?  These Quattroportes likely did not stuff the coffers of Maserati, as the fit, finish, and performance seem to cater more to consumer satisfaction than they do to shareholder gains.

This example is optioned with a remarkable white over tan color combination that we would be proud to drive home in.  Other than the dated navigation screen, we would say that the interior has aged gracefully, and compares favorably to the FCA Quattroportes of present.  A facelifted model, this Quattroporte features the ZF automatic, which some seem to favor over the semi-auto units of early cars.  We're of the opinion that both have their merits, but the ZF auto is a better fit for most buyers.  In S spec, this example features the 4.7L version of the F136 Y engine, producing a very respectable 434hp.

We think that the used Quattroporte buyer is a very specific type.  Perhaps he is tempted by the Jaguar XKR, or a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, but he is not interested in settling for an ordinary sedan.  The sound, the design, and the feel - yes, that's Poltrona Frau leather inside - lead him to the Quattroporte.  A used Quattroporte represents the coolest offering in the large sedan world in the past 20 years.  For those that can't make a Ferrari GTC4Lusso work, we recommend the Quattroporte.

2006 Maserati Quattroporte

We are willing to overlook quite a bit in the name of promoting a metallic brown Quattroporte.  Aftermarket wheels?  The unfavorable DuoSelect automated manual transmission?  Minor details, when there's brown paint involved.

The DuoSelect automated manual transmission, making use of a dry clutch and essentially a robotic clutch slave cylinder, is the subject of criticism from both the automotive press and the Maserati community.  The press was not impressed with the sudden, direct shifts of the automated manual in automatic mode, which seemed more at home in something like a Ferrari F430.  The Maserati community was alarmed by premature clutch wear, due mostly to poor modulation of the clutch when moving from a stop, especially on an incline.  The criticism may have played a role in lackluster initial sales as well, because in 2007, Maserati began offering the Quattroporte with an automatic ZF transmission with improved drivability, first as an option, and then as standard.

Why then, suggest that the readers of Classic Italian Cars for Sale consider purchasing an earlier DuoSelect Quattroporte?  First, we haven't driven one, so we don't know just how bad it really is.  Based on our experience with automated manuals, they're only really only a hassle when moving at a relaxed pace.  We're no strangers to the deep rasp of a 4.2 liter Maserati V8 at full boil, so our modest suggestion would be to drive the wheels off of it as often as possible and keep the transmission in manual mode.  Not so difficult, right?

When negotiating for this low-mileage example, it would be wise to negotiate a price the includes only the OEM wheels, which the seller is offering with the sale.  Just don't let the seller know how much you dig the full wood steering wheel or the tan Poltrona Frau leather with brown piping.

1991 Alfa Romeo 164 S project

While an honest seller is invaluable when purchasing a 25 year old Italian car, where does one draw the line on honesty?  Is it ever truly necessary to post a photo of your vehicle on a flatbed in a for sale ad?  If no, give the seller of this 1991 164 S some credit for brutal honesty, at least.

According to the seller, a small engine fire wiped out some of the engine wiring harness, HVAC, and engine compartment components. In the process of repairing the damage, the seller stripped the entire engine bay down to bare metal, and reportedly rustproofed, primed, and painted the area back to factory specs.  Yet to be completed is a full repaint of the front fenders and hood, as well as a replacement of melted plastic components on the engine.

Having spent more than our fair share of time under the hood of various 164s, we can appreciate the clean engine bay paintwork.  It would be difficult to resist the temptation to bring the engine itself up to the level of finish already present in the engine bay.  The rest of the exterior appear to be sorted cosmetically, though higher resolution photos would required to truly assess that.  A few interior photos wouldn't hurt either - otherwise, the interior condition remains a mystery.

$4,500 is not quite average for a sorted 164 S with similar mileage, so the seller isn't completely unreasonable with their asking price.  The remaining paint and assembly work will add up quickly, unless done yourself, so be sure to factor that into any offers.  The OZ Superleggera wheels and Bosch Euro projector headlights sweeten the deal a bit, in our opinion.  And, the recent brake, suspension, and steering rack maintenance, along with a reportedly rebuilt engine, should instill some level of confidence in any buyers' minds.  We say check the car out in person, get a paint quote, and make a judicious offer - this could end up as quite a sharp 164 S in the hands of a knowledgable buyer!

1962 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Pininfarina Series II

As series of cars go, I don't believe that any can match the pure beauty, speed and desirability of the Ferrari 250 line. The variations are seemingly endless; from the iconic Testarossa, the stunning GTO, elegant and brutal SWB in racing to the simply gorgeous Lusso and California Spider models, I can think of no other line of cars that is so perfectly designed - or so valuable. Perhaps only eclipsed by a few rare Bugattis the value of even the lowliest of the 250 line is simply staggering these days, and the most expensive of the line nearly matches the GDP of some African nations. I was lucky enough (or not, depending on how you look at it) to have had a 250 GT Lusso in my family at one point. Won over a drunken card game in the late 1960s, my grandfather enjoyed that car for many years before financial difficulties in the 1970s saw him sell it. At the time, he just about doubled his money on the car and considered himself lucky. Today, he would have seen a return in the neighborhood of 3,750% return on his investment with no end in sight. And the Lusso is one of the least expensive models right now - jump into a 250 Cabriolet like this, and you're set back 1.5 million dollars. And this isn't even the prettiest of the 250s! But such is the craziness that surrounds the mystical marque of Ferrari, so sit back and enjoy the view.

1972 Fiat 130 Coupe

Fiat's rebirth in the United States with the 500 models and a partnership with Chrysler is a bit of a sad turn of events for the legendary company in my mind. True, it's great to see them back on U.S. shores, but when one considers some of the legendary Fiats that we've seen over their storied history, it's hard to get on board with the somewhat trendy but hardly classic new 500 and awful but strangely popular 500L. It's hard to believe that the air conditioning works on this car considering some of the older Italian car's notoriety for nothing working at all. Yet, here is a pristine, claimed original condition 130 Coupe. It's just so pretty, so advanced for the time it looks like it could have been made a decade later. The 5-speed and solid color combination make this a particularly nice option. Asking price is a bit more than a fully optioned 500, but really, which would you rather have?

The 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC in lovely light blue with alloys did not sell last time around on eBay and is back up for sale. These Ferraris are quite hot items these days, with a 250 GTO about to hit auction and already being claimed to be the most expensive car ever sold. The GTC is far short of the GTO in terms of value, but with the reserve still on and bidding at $630,000, it sure isn't cheap! Still, it's very pretty to see and lovely to dream about:

When I was a young man, my father and I were at a car show with his 1927 Bentley 3/4.5 open tourer. At the show was also a late 1960s Ferrari 330 GTC. I remember the owner of the GTC was very interested in the Bentley, to the point where he offered a trade of his GTC in exchange for the Bentley. At the time, it seemed like a poor idea; the Bentley was at that point worth about triple what the GTC was, aside from being a family item which had been passed down. In hindsight, it probably would have been a very good investment if you could have predicted prices on these cars - while early Bentley prices have increased over the past few years back to the level they were at in the early 1990s, Ferrari prices have absolutely gone through the roof. The 330 GTC isn't the prettiest, fastest or most rare Ferrari - but none of that seems to matter, because it's got the right look, the right engine, and the right badge:

This model is a very pleasing color combination and condition is certainly very good. In the past four years, GTC pricing has quadrupled from around $200,000 for the best examples to just shy of $800,000 for the best examples. It really puts the 400i into perspective; a car that can be had for less than a tenth of the price of the GTC but is very similar in many aspects. While GTCs are certainly pretty to look at, I'd probably choose a 365 GTC/4 well before this model for less than a third of the price.
