1976 Lancia Scorpion

After last week's mostly negative take on the Lancia Scorpion, here we find ourselves sharing one yet again. The reason for this is twofold. First, we had an unpleasant interaction with a painter earlier this week while stripping down a Milano Verde for some rust repair, and made us think a little bit. He was incredulous as to why anyone would spend the money to repair an 80s Alfa sedan. We don't wish to sound like that painter, so we won't rain on the Scorpion parade just because we don't 'get' the cars. Reason two? Well, we 'get' this one!

The example that we shared last week was actually in better shape, but we like the details on this one much better. First, the BWA basket wheels are all sorts of cool. And then there's the paint color; we love how the black trim works with the bright blue. Finally, this car has a quad headlight conversion from a Lancia Beta Spyder/Zagato. Mind you, these are all aspects of any Lancia Scorpion that could be altered, but seeing them all present on a car for sale is rather compelling.

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 1976 Lancia Scorpion

You're looking at my 1976 Lancia Scorpion targa-top coupe. This is a neat little car that is almost ready to be put back on the road. I purchased this last Summer when I bought a '65 Porsche 912 from an older gentleman and he asked if I'd also buy this as well to help him out. I had always thought they were cool, and had literally only seen one other in person many many years ago, so I bought it. It wasn't running when I got it, but it looked like a pretty well taken care of example overall.

I had the starter rebuilt, performed a general tune up, oil/filter change, and she fired right up. It runs really well. I was told the motor was rebuilt a few years back. It has an Alquati intake with Weber 42 DCNF's. Exhaust is a CSC system. Bosch alternator, Pertronix ignition. I had a shop install new clutch master and slave cylinders, and new brake master and slave cylinders. The shop had the car for well over 8 months and I was getting peeved. They kept saying "It'll be ready tomorrow" and tomorrow never came. I finally went and took the car back, but they hadn't connected some of the brake lines or bled them, as well as the clutch line. They also had let the hard top fall off the car and get scratched, as well as lost one of the black plastic trim pieces on the hood, and the shift knob is missing! Needless to say I won't be going back to that shop!!!

The car was originally a different shade of blue as you can see in some of the pics (inside trunks, door jambs). I like the color now as it's very period correct and looks great. The paint job is several years old but looks good. I'd call it a 5 footer. Not really any major paint flaws, it's just not "perfect".The hood has a few small dings in it that a paintless dent repair guy can massage out. The interior is in really good condition and was restored about 10 years ago, and looks very good still. This Carolina's car has been stored indoors, and is very solid underneath for a 43 year old example.

I believe the rims are vintage 15" BWA's. Front brakes are Wilwood 4 piston calipers with slotted rotors. Koni struts in front, KYB in the rear.

The car comes with two tops...the fiberglass "double bubble" hardtop as seen in the pics, and the folding cloth top that is stored in the front trunk. As I mentioned, the shop let the top fall off the car and it has some minor damage. A paint shop can fix easily.

I am selling the car as it sits because I have moved on to another project that is more up my alley...another classic air cooled Porsche 911 to bring back to life. You can probably have this car back on the road with a few hours of work connecting and bleeding the lines. Im pretty sure everything is still there, just needs properly hooked up and bled. I'm just not fooling with it any more. Someone might ask "Why don't you just fix it and get more $$$ in the end?".  It's one of those things where I got so disgusted by the shops' BS that I have just moved on. If you're handy, you'll be on the road in no time.

The condition of this example is at a juncture where it could either descend into disrepair or emerge victorious, faults having been addressed. We see a fair amount of non-terminal scale on the underside, especially on the shield covering the coolant pipes underneath the car. The engine bay shows signs of neglect, with flaking paint and missing timing belt covers, and the seller states that some brake and clutch bleeding will be required to make the car streetable.

If there is one problem we have with this car, it's the current bidding. Seems pretty high for a repainted car without any sort of refreshing, other than the claimed engine build a few years back. With rust to address, hydraulics to bleed, and a so-so interior, we'd hope to see something under $5k. But, like us, perhaps the bidders are loving the 037 look to the quad headlights - we can blame them!

1976 Lancia Scorpion

It is forgivable to forget that Lancia sold the Scorpion in the US, with Lancia only offering the car in 1976 and 1977 - two years in an eight-year production run. Given its edge over the X1/9 from Turin, it would seem that the Scorpion squandered its potential by petering out after two years. How many cars go off the market for an entire year to rework the braking system after complaints of locked front brakes? Sadly, the sharp Pininfarina duds didn't have the mechanical backing to impress drivers.

And yet, the Scorpion came close to success. A twin cam 4-cylinder mated to a 5-speed, four-wheel disc brakes, and a McPherson suspension front and rear were a good place to start in that era. The strangling effects of the catalyst - interestingly, requiring an extra pair of vents on the rear of US cars - and the detuned camshafts of the US Scorpion models really sank the deal. We're sure that some devoted Scorpion fans in the US, or California really, are onboard with the emissions equipment, but we'd be inclined to ditch it to reclaim the nearly 40hp lost in transit across the Atlantic.

The car appears to be in great driver condition. The Florida locale benefits it somewhat, and we imagine that the car has been stored indoors, based on the condition. Rust could be an issue, so we recommend a thorough discussion with the seller and an inspection for any prospective buyers. The vinyl interior is salvageable, with just a few ripped seams to repair, but sourcing vinyl isn't at all difficult, should it come to that.

We're curious to see where this one ends up. On the one hand, we're fortunate to see such cool and interesting cars like this on the market for relatively small sums. But, there could be a reason that these have remained affordable for so long. We're optimistic - upgraded carbs, some hot cams, and a proper exhaust, we think that one of these would wake up quite nicely.

1961 Lancia Flaminia

The car that marked our first exposure to a melodic V6 was actually German in origin - the VW GTI MKIV VR6. It wasn't until we heard the sound of an Alfa Romeo Milano Verde that we knew the draw of a stout Italian V6. The 60 degree Busso V6 would not have been possible, were it not for the work of Francesco De Vergilio at Lancia, where he led the first V6 engine to production.

Lancias powered by the De Vergilio V6, as opposed to the Dino V6 and the later Busso V6 borrowed from Alfa Romeo, require substantial cash to obtain. The sedans tend to run slightly less expensive, although in the case of the Flaminia, they are actually less common. Here, we've found a salvageable Flaminia project at close to $15k, which might be exactly what it's worth in this state, but is certainly much less than we are used to seeing these at.

Being located in Puerto Rico, sun damage to the interior will be more of a concern than rust. And with that said, the dash doesn't look to be destroyed, nor do the seats. Rust could be limited to the areas where the minor damage occurred. We won't speculate on the cost to get this car back to perfection - that could be extremely costly - but getting this car to decent running status could be a realistic prospect without much of an investment. Clean up the headlight area of the front headlight, pull the dent from the rear quarter, and straighten up the front bumper and its mounts.

Will the engine run, and if not, is it salvageable? We imagine that this will have a large bearing on the viability of the project. These engine might be simple in construction, but some replacement parts will come at a significant price. Knowing what you're getting into on this car likely means that you already own an Aurelia or a Flaminia, and that's the sort of buyer we expect for something like this. Our Milano Verde's engine grenaded a week after we bought, but we were able to rebuild it with relative ease; this Flaminia, we imagine, wouldn't be so painless to repair.

2005 Maserati Quattroporte

Continuing with the Maserati Quattroporte theme for today, we present a dark green 2005 example. Of all of the Quattroportes on the market, why select an early 4.2L Cambiocorsa model over a later 4.7L Automatica model? Because we can't pass up a Verde Goodwood Maserati. Especially a Verde Goodwood M138 Coupe - seriously, let us know if you have one for sale.

Further, we think that the early models pull of the general design a bit better than the facelifted models did. Our ideal Quattroporte would be an early model with the 4.7L in 454hp form from the GranTurismo with the manual transmission from an M138 coupe. We'd go Verde Goodwood over Cuoio Sella, just like on this example.

We seem to be noticing a glut of low-mile Maseratis in Florida. Hopefully these belonged to retirees with the funds to keep their cars in good shape. Clearly the selling dealer has its hands full - look in the photos, and you'll see a number of additional cars stage on the driveway of the Florida home being used as a back-drop.

If this car checks out mechanically, it could be a great purchase. The color combination is perfect, the miles are under 30k, and the price is solidly under $20k, while the power approaches 400hp. Buy this thing before we snatch it up for a manual swap project of our own!

1983 Ferrari Mondial QV

Following up yesterday's top-of-the-heap Mondial T, let's take a look at a flawless, original Mondial QV, sitting in the middle of the pack. To start off, we need to address the fact that Ferrari sold four distinct Mondial models throughout the nameplate's lifetime. With each model came a new iteration of the Dino V8.

The Mondial 8 debuted in 1980 with its 16-valve, 214hp fuel-injected V8. The QV added its namesake of quattrovalvole or 4-valve (per cylinder) heads, and a modest step down in compression in 1982. The Mondial 3.2, our personal favorite due to have the highest power of the transversely mounted cars, bumps up the bore, stroke, and compression ratio to get to a 270hp 3.2L iteration for 1985. These are the last of the cars in which a belt service can be performed with the engine in situ. In 1989, the Mondial T ushered in the new longitudinal powertrain layout that Ferrari would maintain for all future mid-engined sports cars. Mondial Ts were equipped with the bored and stroked 3.4L Dino V8, whose bump in compression and displacement netted 300hp.

his is an original Gray exterior car with red leather interior.  The car was painted about a year ago in the same original gray color.  To get the car ready for the new paint t all the glass, bumpers, lights and moldings were removed.  The primary reason for painting the car was due to clear coat peeling off.  All the body panels and trim pieces were kept the same original color. The interior leather, carpet, dash and headliner are all original and in very good original condition. The driver seat foam was strengthen due to age and the original leather cover was reinstalled. The condition of the interior shows the car was well taken care of and was parked indoor all its life.

Complete engine out service on 10/26/2015 at 37,097 miles including replacement of timing belt, tensioner, seals, drive belts, new coolant, engine oil, transmission oil, spark plugs, water pump, etc. The total cost of the service was $12,520.

The emission system is completely new including air pump, valves injector lines, and catalytic converters.  The Car easily passes the strict California emission without any issues which speaks to the condition of the engine.

New clutch, pressure plate, releasing bearing, and starter was installed on 10/1/2016 at 37,624 miles at the cost of $2,942. The clutch is upgraded kevlar material and the pressure plate is upgraded plate from 328 model.

Every power accessory works as they should including  power windows, door locks, mirrors, antenna and the power sunroof which is very rare on these cars to operate properly.  Air Conditioning blows cold air and keeps the cabin at a comfortable temperature in southern California summer heat.
It has a Pioneer CD player with an auxiliary input to connect to your phone, there is an amplifier under the passenger's seat.

The car has aftermarket 7"x16" and 8"x16" wheels that look identical to the original OEM rims but without the issue of being stuck with the Michelin TRX metric tires.  The wheels were bought from Superformance in UK and they are also made in UK. The tires are like brand new and have almost full tread.
The car comes with the complete, unused OEM tools, jack, spare bulb, emergency light, books, first aid kit, and custom made car cover.  The spare tire is brand new and has never been installed on the car.
You can find cheaper Mondials but if you are looking for a Mondial that it is in excellent condition with complete and up to date service history, you will not find another one. By the time you spend the money that I have spent on the paint and services for another Mondial, it will cost you more than my asking price. This is a perfect car for someone that enjoys driving their Ferrari on a regular basis and wants a car that is all original and in perfect condition.
Please note the car will be sold with the original steering wheel that is in very good condition, the MOMO steering wheel on the car is not for sale, I will install the original steering wheel prior to delivery of the car to the new owner.

I drive the car on a regular basis both in heavy traffic and freeways without any issues. The current mileage on the car is 39,700 miles, I drive the car on a regular basis and the mileage may increase during the listing period. I have a clean California title in hand with current registration for the car until September of 2019.

I have all the invoices for the work that was done to the car by a local Ferrari shop.

You may contact me at (310) 892-2177.  The car is located in Newport Beach, California.  I will assist with shipment.

We are hard-pressed to issue a single complaint about this Mondial QV. Perhaps we'd prefer the 3.2 and the bump in power, but that's hardly fair to what seems to be a fully-functional and original example. In addition to the clean engine work, including the full water pump and belt service, the car has a fresh clutch and pressure plate. Cosmetic work, such a glass-out repaint to address peeling clear coat, and new seat foam under the original, surviving seat covers has been carried out neatly, and with skill.

We think it's easiest to pull off a Mondial when you own that it's a Mondial and wear the Ferrari badge modestly. That's why we like this Mondial - it's been optioned with a less-common color combination that restricts the Ferrari red to those sitting inside the car, and thankfully lacks the Ferrari shields on the front fenders. Amazing how fresh a Mondial can present after so many years of proper care. The current owner claims that mileage could increase before sale due to the fact that he drives the car often - good on him. We hope the new seller keeps in line with this and drives this car as often as possible.

1989 Ferrari Mondial T

We bought our first Italian car in Atlanta, GA, where this Mondial T is located. We flew in from Indiana and drove it back overnight. Our car was a 1989 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde. Readers will have varying opinions on the styling of the car and its place in the Alfa hierarchy, but our experience has been that it takes a lot of explaining to friends and acquaintances - until you drive it, that is.

We think the Mondial suffers from a similar reputation. While we're on board with the proportions and styling, it does come across as an odd shape to those used to the 308's classic lines. But, when you take into consideration the mechanical underpinnings, the credibility as a 2+2 sporting car starts to mount. As opposed to earlier Mondials, the T sports a 32-valve 3.4L V8 mounted in the longitudinal orientation. At 300hp coming in at 7200RPM, you'll be hard-pressed to label the engine experience as anything but Ferrari.

With the longitudinal arrangement comes one consequence though: belt access. In order to service a Mondial T's belts and water pump, the engine must be dropped. Not a deal-breaker for the home mechanic, but a bit more involved than the wheel well access on transverse-engined Mondials. Fortunately for potential buyers of this car, the selling dealer has completed an engine-out service, also known as a major service, to address those items.

In our minds, there is some unwritten rule against buying black Italian cars. We're 1 for 3 on that rule, and we'd break it again to get into this black on tan Mondial T. The Connolly hides show as well any that we've seen in front and in back, where we'd be tempted to throw some friends for a drive out to dinner. Hopefully they're not embarrassed about riding around in a Mondial - we wouldn't be!

1984 Lancia 037 Stradale

By now, the story of the Lancia 037 is a familiar one: Lancia set out to follow up the FIA Group 5 World Rally Championship success of their Stratos with the 037 in the newly-minted FIA Group B World Rally Championship. Series regulations required the manufacture of 200 road-going examples in order to compete, and thus, the Lancia 037 Stradale was born.

The mid-section of the cars was borrowed from the Lancia Montecarlo/Scorpion, while steel tube structures replaced the front and rear of the donor cars. Kevlar-reinforced fiberglass made up the new front and rear body work, which was designed by Pininfarina. The mid-engine layout was retained, but with the engine and transmission rotating 90 degrees into a longitudinal layout. Abarth breathed on the powertrain, while none other than Dallara provided the necessary suspension design and tuning.

As exciting as the history of these cars is, we wonder if there isn't a way to coax more power from the twin cam Fiat engine. Nothing irreversible, but something more nonetheless. Aside from the relatively - and with a curb weight of 2,579lb, we do mean relatively - low power output of 205hp, we wouldn't change anything about one of these Stradales.

Homologation specials are, it now seems, strictly the domain of wealthy collectors. If that describes you, then this example may be a wise purchase. For the rest of use, well, a nice Montecarlo with a hot 2 liter might come close.

1991 Alfa Romeo 164 S project

No platform for car sales can match the extremes in pricing found on Craigslist. In the case of today's Alfa Romeo 164 S, we are witnessing the lower limits of pricing. And, whereas most great Craigslist deals are snatched up immediately, the reality is that Alfa 164s just don't sell all that quickly. So, this listing isn't liable to end after mere hours or days on the market.

The rust-free, assembly-required 164S is priced about right, in our opinion. It is not all that common to find a serviceable 164 for sale in this price range, much less a 164 S, with its sport bodywork and 200hp V6. Consider the included 164L parts car, though, and the deal is really quite sweet.

The ever-important timing belt and water pump service tasks are checked off for the 10:1 compression ratio V6. All four corners have new shocks, which are becoming more difficult to source for 164s these days. Sport springs can sometimes be a bit stiff on the 164, but the poly bushings should serve to tighten things up to a more agreeable degree. If the paint checks out, this car stands to present very well once pieced together. And if it doesn't, we'd recommend just repainting everything when finishing up the paint work on the hood and trunk lid. Finally, the interior, though not original, is classy enough to keep in theme with the original.

We've been guilty of biting off too much at one time in past projects, so we really like the realistic scope of this project. Finish up the paint, get everything all bolted up, and enjoy. Swap out the ronal wheels for something closer to your taste, if necessary, and decide on whether or whether not you'll run the S-spec rear spoiler. And when you're done, you'll have a clean 164 S without outstanding mechanical needs. And a parts car. And a lot of money leftover. Not bad!

2006 Maserati Quattroporte

Every now and then, when we see one of these Tipo M139 Maserati Quattroportes roaming the streets, we lament the recent abandonment of the classic large sedan proportions. The Quattroporte V nails these proportions in a way that few of its contemporaries, outside of Jaguar XJ, ever could. And, it's a shape that begs to travel across the country at unacceptable speeds.

Fortunately, it's got the mechanical underpinnings to back that notion up. We've heard few positive reports on the DuoSelect transmission, but we have to wonder if the detractors were driving the car as intended. This isn't a car built for shuffling along narrow European streets; rather, it aspires to full-throttle ascents of Montana mountain passages. Backed by an F136 Ferrari power plant, the task should be both effortless and enjoyable.

A rare two-owner pampered example of a Quattroporte. This spectacular Maserati was purchased new and serviced at Maserati SF. All maintenances have been completed on time, and no expense was ever spared. The clutch was recently replaced as well as a major service. The Grigio Nuvolari shows to be original and the car shows no signs of previous damage. The Cuoio Sella Premium Leather Seating shows no abnormal wear, shrinkage, sun damage or fading. All books, manuals, and keys are present and it was a non-smoker's pampered garage queen. There are a lot of poseur Maseratis on the market with deferred maintenance and in need of a clutch. This is NOT one of those cars. This car was maintained like a proper automobile with a six-figure price tag from day one. Our site posts content to many other sites all over the world. To ensure all pictures are accessible, we provide a link back to each listing on our site. This listing's URL: https://www.carsauto.com/2006-maserati-quattroporte-c-1611.htm

The swaths of Cuoio Sella Poltrona Frau leather throughout the interior play well with the subtle but striking Grigio Nuvolari metallic exterior paint. The car was clearly garaged, as evidenced by the condition of the leather surfaces - no sun damage or shrinking to be found. Minor road rash can be found on the front bumper and along the sills, but these spots can be touched up. More important than cosmetics, the mechanical condition of this example is claimed to be immaculate. The seller claims that no maintenance was deferred, noting even a recent clutch replacement among the service history.

We have picked up that the reputation of these cars is a bit negative. Cheap to buy, they fall into the hands of those seeking attention from the Trident. As owners of a used Maserati ourselves, we believe that you're mistaken to think that the typical person on the street will notice you in a Maserati of this vintage. And that's a good thing, because you won't need any outside validation in an executive sedan like this one. Our bet is that Maserati didn't profit too much on this generation of Maserati, all the more reason to buy one.

2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

The 612 Scaglietti may not succeed the 456 with grace, owing mostly to its size, but as far as large coupes go, few can compete with the design of the 612. And those that do? Well, they don't come with Ferrari power.

Motivating the aluminum chassis and bodywork of the 612 is a familiar 5.7L V12 based on the engine found in the Ferrari 575M and also found in the Superamerica variant of the 575M. In this trim, the engine produced 533hp, which was the most that any street car saw out of the 65 degree F133 series of Ferrari V12s.

Very few 612s made it out of Maranello with a traditional manual, so this car is forgiven for its F1 paddles. We typically don't seek out black Italian cars, despite owning two, and we think that a blue would suit this car a bit better. But, it does have the polished split-spoke wheels that we love, and we do like how they work with the black exterior.

So, where does the $100k 612 fit into the picture, when manual 456s are readily available in that region and below? Well, if you actually plan on driving it on long trips, the updated suspension and increased interior space could be worth something. We wouldn't bet on it being more reliable, as Ferrari took a reliable design and complicated it. And, the electronic displays haven't aged all that well either. We'll keep a look out for 612s in going forward, and hopefully we'll find a nice traditional manual with the gated shifter to share.
