2003 Maserati Spyder GT

Giubo. Gweeebo. Stradaaale. Gran Turisomo. Cambiocorsa. Some words, for the english speakers at least, are fun to pronounce. Sometimes they are so fun that they get used even where they don't apply. With the Maserati Coupe and Spyder, much of the public was confused by what was essentially a lack of any sort of name, outside of Coupe or Spyder. And complicating matters were the Cambiocorsa and GT designations, separating the manual GT cars from the automated-manual Cambiocorsa cars. So, it's nice to see one properly labeled, as searching for Coupe or Spyder GT usually leads to a disappointing handful of Cambiocorsas.

The traditional manual cars seem to be the more reliable of the two options, and do tend to command higher prices. That said, we don't see the problem with the automated-manual. It doesn't quite fit the grand touring theme, but that's what makes it more appealing to us - like Recaro sport seats and a throaty exhaust in an unassuming sedan, often it's the unexpected features of a car that give it the most personality. But enough about paddle shifters, because today we're featuring a 3-pedal manual.

This example is optioned nicely, with the Skyhook suspension and some tasteful contrast stitching on the inside. When these were on the new-car market, the option book rivaled Porsche, when it came to interior options. Upper and lower door panels and dashboard as well as seats and carpet were all available in a wide array of colors - for a price, of course.

Last week we featured an Alfa romeo 8C Spider at 10 times the price of this Maserati Spyder. With around 500 built of each, if you separate the manual Spyder from the automated-manual Spyder, they are equally rare. The 8C is more of a car of occasion, but we see a tremendous value in the Maserati, which is mechanically similar at one tenth of the cost.

2004 Maserati Coupe Cambiocorsa Track Car

Serial eBay prowlers are probably wondering why this car hasn't turned up here sooner. It would be dishonest of us to not admit that it's mostly due to the fact that we were hoping to come up with the courage to list our 2004 Coupe GT in order to make room for this track version of the same car.

The Tipo M138 Coupe straddles the line between a true GT and more of a large sports coupe. The general internet consensus is that, in comparison to a true Italian GT such as the Ferrari 456, the Coupe is sportier, and easier to toss into a corner. On the other hand, a Ferrari F430 owner might prefer the streetable power curve of the Coupe, but nobody will confuse a Maserati Coupe with a sports car after stepping out of a Ferrari F430.

This particular motorcar was purchased by a gentleman who always wanted to race cars. He spared no expense when it came to outfitting his dream.
It has Forgeline Alloy Wheels, Brembo Calipers, Recaro Seats, Schroth Racing Harness, Mychron 5 Dash lap counter, Camera and special roll bar.
The transmission is manual six speed CC using paddle shifters. The Cambiocorsa electrohydraulic manual transmission uses a Formula One type of gear box operated by F1 style paddles behind the steering wheel, similar to the system used in Ferrari sports cars. It allows the driver to choose between 4 different modes of operation: Normal, Sport, Auto and Low Grip.

We love the idea of getting one of these out onto the track. After all, the Cambiocorsa gearbox was designed for track use, and by most accounts comes up short on the street anyway. The platform deserves to be let loose. Hopefully you don't mind getting lapped by Mustangs and Camaros though - we aren't betting on the Coupe being anything spectacular out on the track.

Pricing here is on the high side for a paddle-shifting Coupe, but between the wheels, brakes, dash display, camera, seats, and harness, there is plenty to sweeten the deal. The color is less common, and the mileage on this example is quite low. Of course, those miles contain many hard track miles. Now, who is ready to double that count?

1974 Maserati Merak

Following yesterday's Lamborghini Urraco P250, we present Maserati's offering in the entry-level high-end mid-engine sports car space. Entry-level high-end. Hmm. Regardless, we're talking Porsche 911 fighters here. Powerful engines, smart chassis design, and not much potential for anything more than a weekend trip.

The Merak comes from the Citroen ownership era of Maserati history. Inside, you'll find a Citroen SM steering wheel and dashboard, while under the hood, the SM's 90 degree 187hp V6 makes an appearance. The bodywork forward of the doors is borrowed from the V8-powered Maserati Bora.

Oddly enough, it's the Citroen engineering that gives us hope for keeping one of these on the road with relative ease. The brake hydraulics are SM-derived, and while unorthodox, they are not as complex as they are made out to be. Keep in mind that it was this engine that made the basis for the later Biturbo cars, and while those can be a handful to maintain, the relative simplicity of the same basic engine in the SM and Merak will lend to a more satisfying ownership experience.

We're sort of surprised at the somewhat-reasonable price on what is, with only 600 units sold, a relatively rare Maserati. The Merak seems to track the pricing of its Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 more than it does the Urraco, or even the 911, for that matter. To us, it's a great opportunity to buy a great wedge design - from Giugiaro instead of Gandini, in this case. If this car cleans up and turns out to be in good mechanical order, we'd consider it to be a great purchase.

Any Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley edition fans out there? Rhetorical question; our site stats show the Panda 4x4 Sisley as a clear reader favorite. You all don't seem to mind Lancia 037 Stradales either, but those are tough to find. So today, readers, we will check in on the Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley market.

Those of us in the US, and possibly even the European readers, might not be familiar with the origin of the Sisley moniker. As it turns out, Sisley is a brand under the United Colors of Benneton umbrella. Something like the heritage brand Orvis in the US, it would seem. So, in addition to canoe appliqués on the seat backs, the Sisley edition adds an inclinometer, the hood scoop, and a roof rack, among other details. An Italian premonition of the various L.L. Bean and Eddie Bauer edition vehicles that have turned up in the US over the years. A final note on the Sisley edition - the Panda 4x4 was assembled in Termini Imerese, Sicily. One could say Fiat Panda 4x4 by Sisley, by Sicily.

A facelift model, this Panda 4x4 eschews the pushrod 965cc engine of early models for a 49hp 999cc SOHC unit from the FIRE engine family. This example should be galvanized, though we are not exactly sure of when galvanized bodies went into serial production, though it was after the facelift. As long as the 4x4 PTO is in good working condition, we wouldn't have too many reservations with going through one of these mechanically. The engine is standard, simple Fiat fare, and the suspension is conventional up front and a rudimentary leaf spring and live axle out back. Part sourcing, though not the simplest of tasks, shouldn't prove too difficult.

Likely forgotten over the years, these Panda 4x4s, Sisley editions especially, have picked up momentum in the past five years or so. As such, the market is in no shortage of opportunists trying to make a quick buck off of the newfound interest. Low-effort photos seem to be the norm, as far as we can tell. So, buying from afar will require a communicative seller who is willing to provide detailed service information and ample photographs. This example has potential, and how appealing it ends up being is now dependent on how far the seller is willing to go in creating buyer confidence.

1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale

We're going to take a quick moment to present a view that we believe to be our own: The Alfa Romeo Milano/75 sort of reminds us of a sedan version of the Lancia Delta. It's not too clean a comparison, but imagine the Milano without a truck and you start to see it. Now, where the two cars do bear resemblance is in their power outputs; the Milano Verde's Busso V6 produces the same 183hp as the 1987 to 1989 Delta HF Integrale 8V's 2.0L turbocharged engine.

This car, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on where you stand on modifying rare cars, contains the improved 16V engine from a later 1987-1991 Delta HF Integrale 16V. Maybe someone can explain to us the logic of swapping out a turbo engine for another turbo engine in order to increase power by 15hp. Sure, the powerband is probably better, response might be sharper, but there are simpler and more easily-reversed tactics for increasing the power level of a turbocharged engine.

One byproduct of the inflated pricing on these cars is that replacement parts should be somewhat easier to come by. It's a tough balance, as an enthusiast of older cars - better to have cheap and plentiful examples, and spend multiples of their values in repair parts? Or is it perhaps more palatable to have cheap and plentiful repair parts, spending more on the original vehicle itself? Who knows, maybe both are expensive on these Integrale 16Vs.

We are total fans of the general styling of these Delta HF Integrales. From the boxed fender flares, to the dual round headlights, to the slanted rear hatch with upturned spoiler, to the phonedial wheels, to the unique door handles, the cars just get detail after detail right. $38k will buy you 200hp of red Ferrari, but you're stuck with a Mondial or a washed-up 308 at that point. With the Delta Integrale, you get the rarity factor, the Italian persona, the racing history, and the bright paint, and you get room for companions and some luggage.

Package Deal: 2 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTVs

We've seen some odd listings this week. First, there was the Fiat 500 Jolly conversion service listed as a 2015 Fiat 500. Now, we have people casually listing a parts car right alongside their runner on eBay. We see that a bit on Craigslist, where it's pretty normal, but it just seems off on eBay.

And, what a pair we have here. See, the cars both require new rear ends. So the parts car doesn't really solve the problems on the running car. The main listing, the silver example, has a salvage title, having seen some damage to its rear end. The damages were clearly not professionally repaired, which has led to its deteriorated condition seen in photos today. The maroon parts car, on the other hand, was never repaired, having experienced very similar damages.

Fortunately for prospective buyers, the parts car seems to have been refreshed within 10k miles of its demise. The seller doesn't state the nature of the engine work, but it was likely rebuilt, if we had to guess. The clutch and exhaust were also replaced at that time.

So, we have two cars' worth of GTV driveline and not a single body worth swapping them into - simply, that is. The silver car could be brought back to health with some involved bodywork, as could the maroon car, theoretically. Either way, we don't see the numbers adding up to the seller's asking price, for us at least. Maybe someone out there with some home body repair skills will take on these two ailing GTVs. We certainly hope that they both don't become parts cars.

2002 Maserati Spyder GT

Back to the roadster theme from the beginning of the week - look what we've found! This Maserati Spyder is a rare GT model, meaning that it has a traditional 6-speed manual. We'll gladly assert that this is the best of the quick Italian roadsters for under $100k. So, that doesn't include the Alfas and Fiats, but for top-down driving, and lots of it, we're in the Maserati Spyder GT camp.

Only 574 of the Spyder GT model left the Maserati plant in Modena. The Tipo M138 Maseratis were engineered and produced in Modena, rather than the Maserati founding place of Bologna, due to Ferrari's control of its former rival. This resulted in the development of the powerful F 136 R variant of the engine later found in the Ferrari F430. The Maserati variant was designed with much different breathing paths to encourage low-end torque and driveability throughout the rev range, and came up short to the Ferrari variant by almost 100hp.

The F 136 engine, especially in the Maseratis, is known for relatively painless ownership. Fluids should be changed often for the sake of preservation, but aside from the expense of fluid changes, these engines do not have any serious problem areas. The suspension components will likely be tired at this age, and do often require the replacement of entire suspension linkages as opposed to individual bushings. And, the heater core must be addressed, as most tend to fail due to age (and an improperly designed coolant bypass loop resulting in high pressure through the heater core during warmup).

The Spyder doesn't review particularly well, but we suspect that the writers of the auto magazines don't frequent websites dedicated to the sale of Italian cars. For those who can enjoy a Ferrari-derived and Ferrari-built V8 engine, a Graziano Trasmissioni 6-speed manual, and a simple Giugiaro body, the Spyder GT is more than sufficient.

Save an Alfa: GTV-6 Edition

“When you see me on the block, homie you don’t know me,” the seller of this GTV-6 pronounces from his front valence, but we do know that he finds a certain “Kady” and “Hari” to be important, based on his windshield decal.  What else do we know?  Let’s parse through the photos included in this vague Craigslist ad description to find some information.

First, the car has been aerodynamically altered – bumpers were removed, presumably to reduce drag on the racetrack, and a single plane spoiler has been engineered to decrease lift  while maintaining a palatable level of drag.  Surprisingly, the side mirrors were spared during the optimization process, most likely for a proper view of the trailing field on the racetrack.  The interior is above average for a tan leather interior, based on what we’ve seen.  Though the rear muffler is from a faster and more furious era, don’t be too quick to write it off, at least sonically speaking.  Busso V6s are nearly impervious to the fart can – just hide it under the rear bumper to convey at least a modicum of taste.

Mechanically speaking, we rely on the seller’s description.  A hot dog 164S 3.0L V6, rated at 200hp new, supplants the original 2.5L V6.  In all seriousness, 3.0L GTV-6s are encouraged.  No word on the last engine service, but as we’ve made clear in prior Busso V6 write-ups, the front end engine service is very reasonable to complete either in your home garage or in the trust of an Alfa mechanic.  Around $1,000 or a Saturday – your choice.  The transaxle, likely the original unit with an open diff, is claimed to shift without synchro grind on second gear.  If true, remember to pause in neutral between shifts if you buy the car; patient shifting goes a long way in preserving shift quality.

Clearly this is not a car for a non-mechanical type, or someone looking for a no-excuses car for this spring.  But, for the value shopper, we believe that unreported rust would be the only way to weaken the business for this offering.  Swap the Verde wheels tea tray, bumpers, body cladding, and rear hatch sans spoiler from the parts car onto the 3.0L car, take the car into the shop for some economical but respectable paint, and work out the smaller items like brakes and suspension after you get the car back onto the street.  Sell those fat Borbet wheels to recoup some cost, and make a determination on the parts car.  If you have room, keep it around; otherwise, a weekend and a 6-8 large plastic totes will shrink it down to size.

1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT

Introduced to the North American market in 1975, the Alfetta ushered in an era of torsion bar front suspensions, DeDion rear suspension, and a rear transaxle with inboard disc brakes.  On paper, it improves on the classic GTV formula, but a quick look at the market shows a clear bias for the earlier 105/115 series over the later 116 transaxle cars.  As a result, finding a presentable, let alone rust-free Alfetta coupe is an evermore difficult prospect.

This bumperless example in Connecticut claims to be in rust-free condition, owing no doubt in part to its Texas provenance.  Though rumors abound as to the exact source of systemic rust on the Alfetta models, it is absolutely recommend that any potential sellers do a thorough check for lurking rust before any commitments to this particular car are made.  Especially vulnerable are the wheel arches, cowl area, rear hatch, and jack points.  If the claimed rust-free condition turns out to be the truth, then the uncombed interior might be easier to overlook.

Some technical notes: the engine appears to have supported an A/C system at one point, owing to the stud-plug on the passenger side of the cylinder head.  Also, a rebuilt engine could be a solid advantage, but we would contact the seller for details - who rebuilt it, and what parts were sourced for the build?  And, we can't vouch for the specific brand of piston or headers that the seller reports as installed on this particular car, but both should promote a sporty character in line with the car - just don't expect to surprise anyone at a stoplight.

Very few Alfetta coupes remain on the road, and as such, the prices for clean cars have climbed out of the song and a dance category.  Fortunately for potential buyers, parts car prices remain reasonable.  We say make a competitive offer, source some Euro bumpers, recover the front seats, and drop in an ANSA rear muffler and enjoy a sorted Italian sports coupe for around $5,000.

1989 Lancia Delta HF Integrale

There are few cars that combine so many of my favorite things quite like the Lancia Delta Integrale. Born to race, the Delta successfully combined elements of the E30 M3, Golf GTi and Audi Quattro to create its own legacy. The box flares, all wheel drive and turbocharged engine made nearly the perfect hot hatch. Though the Golf Rallye is sought after by the Volkswagen faithful, the reality is that the Delta Integrale was a better car - better proportioned, faster, and significantly more successful where it was intended to race - the World Rally Championship. The Integrale picked up where the legendary Quattro had started and swept to victory in nearly all of the races that it entered. As a result of its successes on the WRC circuit, the many different roadgoing versions of the Delta Integrale were very much welcomed by enthusiasts on the road:

The result is a stylish, luxurious yet utterly practical five door hatchback with impeccable road manners, but capable of a blistering 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration in just 6.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 133 mph (214 km/h).

At the heart of the 8-valve HF Integrale is a 2-litre 4-cylinder fuel injected twin cam engine, fitted with contra-rotating balancing shafts. This version incorporated the following improvements over the HF 4WD: New valves, valve seats and water pump, larger water and oil radiators, more powerful cooling fan and bigger air cleaner. A larger capacity Garrett T3 turbocharger with improved air flow and bigger inter-cooler to aid volumetric efficiency, together with revised settings for the electronic injection/ignition control unit and a knock sensor, boost power output to 185 bhp (DIN) (136 kW) at 5300 rpm and maximum torque of 31 m·kgf (304 N·m, 224 lbf·ft) at 3500 rpm.

For me, while the Quattro is a desirable car and I do love my Audi very much, the Lancia has always been an object of desire for me. It flies a bit lower on the radar than some of the other Group A entrants, and being newer many of the examples are still affordable; though with the E30 M3 bringing homologated race cars of this generation up in value it remains to be seen how long these classic Italian super-hot hatches will stay affordable. My suggestion is to grab one while you can!
