Reader Classified: 1989 Fiat Uno Turbo

Have an Italian car that you'd like to share with the readers?  Email us graham@blythbros.com to arrange your reader classified posting!

Today's reader classified posting comes from reader Simon, in Alberta, Canada.  Good luck finding another Uno Turbo in Canada, let alone North America.  We love the OMP steering wheel and would have to imagine that an Ansa would sound great on the turbo 4.  That said, we happen to enjoy our Canadian Stebro exhaust on our 1988 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde.

We have to admit, we are very tempted to not only buy this thing, but to then go so far as to move to the Calgary area and flog it in the Canadian Rockies just a bit to the west.  Turbo aspiration + elevation = elation.  The only thing in our way is our serious obsession with the  Fiat Ritmo Abarth 105 TC.  We imagine that the seller will miss his Uno, but a careful glance at the four-post lift in the garage has us convinced that he'll cope with the departure just fine.

Thank you to Simon for posting your car in the reader classifieds!

CICFS Classifieds: 1956 Fiat 1100 Viotti Fuoriserie

Interested in listing your car on the CICFS front page as a classified?  Email us at graham@blythbros.com.

Today's CICFS Classified listing comes to use from Sponsored Seller Automobile Tricolore.

This 1957 Giardinetta Viotti “Sleeping” is basically a smaller, Italian equivalent of the Chevy Nomad two door station wagon format.
When new, the model had quite successful sales among baby-boomers, as it was the ideal car for the big families.  However, it was not a cheap car; it had few refinement which set this car on a higher level than the stock Fiat 1100 on which it is based.

The car was totally restored, starting with extreme attention to detail on the metalwork as well as paint.  The interior was restored, overhauling the mechanical bits while maintaining the original style.
Ample photographs document the entirety of the work.

1975 Fiat 128 Coupé SL

With the weather today hovering in the mid-seventies Fahrenheit, we've chosen a mid-seventies Fiat to share today.  Interestingly, the 128 served as the first mainstream application of Dante Giacosa's front transverse FWD layout - a layout that Fiat had fine-tuned in its Autobianchi subsidiary before introducing into the more mainstream Fiat brand.  That basic architecture would later make its way into the middle of the Fiat X-1/9.

Those interested in a more pure sporting experience will surely prefer the Fiat 124 Sport Coupé.  On paper, the twin cam mill and the RWD layout come across with more sincere sporting intentions.  But, as seen in the X-1/9 and in 128 sedan race cars, the SOHC powertrain has bonafide credibility on the track.

We can't tell whether this example originally had the 1100cc or the 1300cc engine, as the S and SL models came with a choice of either, but the owner mentions that a 1500cc engine from a Bertone is present.  If the buyer is interested in originality, a suitable 1100cc or 1300cc engine shouldn't prove difficult to source.  The seller reports a recent paint job in the original yellow, and claims that all electronics are in operating condition.

Many of these 128 coupes perished to rust, we'd have to imagine, so the rare California car such as this one is always worth consideration.  We continue to believe that SOHC Fiat engines are dead-simple to work on, so if the car is mostly devoid of rust and has most of its trim?  We'd recommend taking a closer look at purchasing.  With sporting touches such as the 14" Cromodora wheels, 1500cc engine swap, and Abarth valve cover and strut tower brace, not to mention the yellow pain, this car puts off a very fun vibe.

1987 Yugo GV

We offer today's Yugo GV write-up as consolation to readers who had to suffer through last Friday's Countach post.  We kid.  A more in-depth review of the Yugo's history is slated for later in the year, but for now, we will cover the basics.  The Yugo GV was an American market variant of the Zastava Yugo 45, itself a version of the Fiat 127, built under license by former Yugoslavian firearm and military implement manufacturer Zastava.

US models originally offered a 1100cc engine, later upgraded to a 1300cc.  Our modest experience with Fiat X-1/9s has educated us on the fact that the 1300cc X-1/9 actually benefits from a swap to the Yugo 1300cc head - the smaller combustion chamber raises the compression.  How about that?  To make your Fiat faster, tap into the Yugo parts bin.  Makes sense.

We would probably just import a Fiat 127, but for those in the US looking for a readily available 127 substitute, this example should suffice.  The reported condition is as good as it gets.  Everything works, no rust, new tires - perfect for a driver or a collector piece.  A Yugo collector piece.

Watch out for the timing belt - these things have interference engines, unlike contemporary VWs.  The performance benefits are worth it as long as you stay on top of the maintenance.  And if you lapse?  Well, Fiat 1300 parts are abundant and available from quite a few suppliers.  These engines are easy to repair and very easy to modify.  You know where our minds are - somebody buy this and build a hot 1300 for it.  You can always swap the original engine back in when you're done with it!

1988 Polsky Fiat 126P

We had to polish up on some Polish history before sharing this rare Fiat - rare in North America, that is.  Outside of North America?  The Bambino, as it was nicknamed in Germany, sold in quantities exceeding 4.5 million, 3.3 million of which were the Polsky Fiat 126P model, produced under license in Poland by FSM.  A rarity it is not.

The 126P was communist Poland's Trabant, so to speak.  Or, it was to Poland as the Fiat 600 was to Italy in the 1950s.  Both vehicles provided mobility to families suffering or recovering from the ill-effects of authoritarian regimes.

Imagine yourself flying around town in this adorable little Fiat. The Fiat 126P or Polski Fiat was designed by Italians, and built behind the iron curtain by the Poles. It's based on the Fiat 500, though, so parts are easy to find, even in the states (I use Mr Fiat in Atlanta GA).

The car runs really well, and it's a blast to drive. It's light, so it's surprisingly quick, and top speed is around 70, so it'll keep up on public roads. It takes a while to start it, as the fuel drains back when it sits. But once it kicks, it starts agreeably, and idles great. Gears shift nicely... they are cable operated, so the feel is a little sloshy, but they are responsive. Brakes are good, the car stops in a nice straight line. Everything works in the car - wipers, lights, etc. with the exception of the turn signals, but I have a new flasher for it, and I expect to have that working soon.

I put a new carburetor, alternator, and fuel pump in the car. I also cleaned the centrifugal oil filter, which is harder than it sounds, and you'll thank me for doing it! The previous owner had an aftermarket radio, which he removed, and the wiring is still there. The front seats could stand to be recovered, as they don't really match the look of the car. Tires are good, brakes are good. Glass is good.

The underside of this car is in really great shape; there is almost no rust whatsoever. The paint work is presentable, though tired from the years. There are some dents and dings and scratches. There is a bubble in the paint on the edge of the hood. I don't think it's serious. I keep an eye on it and it has not grown or gotten any worse. There are some waves in the doors. The drivers side door has been hit and the hinge was welded back in place. There's a hole about 1/2" diameter in the bumper, like someone mounted something there.

The odometer is of course in metric. And I would guess that the 67,000 km is original, just based on the condition of the carpets and interior... it doesn't have enough wear to make me think it's gone around once.

THE VIN ON THIS CAR IS SUF126A0009358578 - eBay doesn't accept a non-standard VIN on cars after 1981 so I used the VIN for my daily driver. No you can't have a GMC Acadia. It's my wife's 🙂
I have the original polish plates, registration sticker and registration card, showing the last owner in Poland before it was imported. I could get you in touch with the man I bought it from, who bought it from that person in Poland, so you would have the complete history of the car back to Poland.
I also have some extra parts that will go with the car - two used carbs, engine gasket set, fan belt, replacement right-hand mirror, etc.

With so many units produced over the vehicle's lifetime, it would stand to reason that only the best would make it to the US these days.  This example supports that theory.  The seller claims that all equipment is in working condition, but notes some cosmetic shortcomings.  The paint is tired, and the seats could use some reconditioning.  As for bodywork, some rust is noted, and there was some damage to the driver's side door, but nothing reported by the seller sounds any alarms here.

We like this unique opportunity to own a vehicle that, while likely to evoke some serious nostalgia, would be viewed as a ridiculous purchase among the Polish who lived with them.  The grass is always greener on the other side, we suppose.

1987 Bertone X-1/9 Corsa

In a humorous contrast from last week's Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale, we bring you today another mid-engine sports car, but in Corsa guise.  This Bertone X-1/9 appears to be little more than a dealership option package consisting of some upgraded bodywork, but its side skirts clearly announce its racing intentions.

All joking aside, the CORSA graphics have a great 80's typeface and aesthetic, and the bodywork itself is interesting enough without venturing into the region of tastelessness.  Magnesium wheels shown here also pull their own weight in the styling department.  Add in the rarity factor, and this is an appealing prospect.

NOTE: eBay does not have a category for the BERTONE make of car. I had to use the old FIAT designation even though Fiat left the U.S. in 1982 and Bertone took over manufacture and production of the X-1/9 model after that. The car is a BERTONE X-1/9 not a FIAT. It is titled as a BERTONE X-1/9 and no FIAT markings are on the car. Also note that this is the CORSA model which was a dealer option and pretty rare at that. Car is currently registered, insured and on the road but garage kept.

1987 Bertone X-1/9 Corsa

 Need to get fog lights for front clip but directionals work fine
 Hi Beams not currently working

The owner notes that some degree of restoration has taken place, though that work will need to continued into the vehicle's next ownership phase.  Overall, the needs listed do not seem too daunting, and as many of our readers are aware, it's not exceedingly difficult to find online technical assistance and parts for these X-1/9s.

Provided that the rust repair work checks out, this could be the basis of a very clean and rare X-1/9.  And, if the tidy engine bay is any indication, we would imagine that the bodywork was done with a similar level of care.  For some, the street-bound Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale just doesn't do it.  In their case, hopefully this Bertone X-1/9 Corsa can make the heart race.

2017 FIAT Spider

Though it's assembled in Japan, the latest FIAT Spider is as close as many of us will get to buying a new Italian sports car, Alfa 4C notwithstanding.  Final assembly takes place in Mazda's Hiroshima assembly plant, while Termoli, Italy is the origin of the 1.4L MultiAir powerplant  The exterior is convincingly Italian, if a bit overwrought.

Reviews are mixed on FIAT's alterations to the Miata formula.  For one, critics generally favor the Mazda powertrain to the torquier FIAT unit.  On the suspension side, the FIAT reportedly corners with less body roll, which is great for transient response, but can rob ultimate grip, which plays a large part in driver confidence in a small sports car.  Further, while the Miata saw an upgraded transmission with its latest redesign, the FIAT is stuck with the old Miata gearbox - never an outright bad thing, but inferior in this case.  But, we haven't driven the new Spider yet, so we'll reserve judgement for our first test drive.

Keeping in tradition with the intent of a sports car, this base "Classico" model is low on frills.  Nice touches, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather shift boot maintain a respectable level of appointment inside the cabin.  The base model wheels are arguably the prettiest on offer, and do complement the retro feel of the design with a more traditional aspect ratio tire.  If tan cloth were available, we would have selected it, but currently only black cloth is available on the Classico models.

Would we put our money into a new Spider?  Well, we haven't had the chance to test drive one yet, so we don't know how well it would stack up to a Miata for us.  We test drove the new Miata in spring of 2016 and were rather impressed with the old school sports car feel, not to mention the proper sporty exhaust note.  As far as appearance goes, we'd probably vote in favor of the Miata as well.  That said, we do prefer to drive an Italian car when available, so our solution would be to buy a Miata and slap some Alfa emblems and Spider badges on - best of both worlds!

1980 Fiat X1/9

Fiat has been back with us here in the US for a few years now, first with their retro 500 and now with a larger 500L thrown in the product mix. We'll see a crossover this Spring, called the 500X, but one type of car is glaringly missing. A sports car. Specifically, something with an open roof. If you'll remember, the Fiat 124 Spider and Fiat X1/9 were the last two Fiats sold in the US before the 500's return in 2012. Toward the end, those two sporting vehicles were sold under the Pininfarina and Bertone badge, respectively. While the 124 Spider was a traditional roadster with a front engine/rear drive chassis, the X1/9, like the one we see here for sale from our reader John, was a decidedly more forward looking sports car, with a targa roof and mid engine. There are still a few out there kicking around in the classifieds, but few come more clean or rust-free.

Looking for an mid-engine Italian sports roadster that doesn't cost more than your house?

This is my 1980 Fiat X1/9 "Abarth" Targa roadster with 84,859 original miles. This car was styled and designed by Bertone in Italy, and for that reason it is often called a "Baby Ferrari" or "Baby Lamborghini".

This are fast, fun, great-handling cars that are becoming much more rare and collectible in recent years. The styling has become classic and these cars are simple to work on and easy to find parts.

This car is a 1.5L with the lift-off targa top which stows in the front trunk. It is a 5-speed manual transmission and it has had an excellent stereo system installed with a JVC head unit, Polk Audio speakers and a 600-watt SPL amplifier.

This car is particularly unique because it is completely RUST-FREE. It is clean and rust-free in every corner and every crevice. This body is solid in every possible place you can look. It is amazing actually.

The interior of the car has been reupholstered and recarpeted with new materials and it looks excellent. This job cost about $1000 and it looks beautiful.

This Fiat runs and drives perfectly. The suspension is all-new and the car handles amazingly well. The engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, etc are working properly with no known issues.

This is probably the cleanest, best-condition X1/9 you will find for sale anywhere. It isn't perfect, there are some minor areas of clearcoat peeling and a few nicks/scratches.

I have a stack of service receipts as well as a repair manual and factory service manual that go with the car.

This car is kept inside my heated warehouse in Willoughby. Email me or call/text me at 440-339-4341 to see the car.

The color on this X1/9 is certainly eye popping but it fits with the period and playful nature of this car. Considering the mileage and condition, the price is about on the mark with where the X1/9 market is currently. You would certainly have a difficult time finding a better deal on a piece of Bertone sculpture to park amongst your collection.

1970 Fiat 500L

While wandering around the city the other weekend with friends, one of them spotted something in the parking lot and turned to me, exclaiming “what’s that?!?” Parked amongst a sea of gray SUVs and rather ho-hum sedans was this little red compact, more specifically, a Fiat Cinquecento. This was the car that helped put Italy on wheels and is still a rather common sight on various streets throughout the Old World, but over on US shores, they are few and far between. This 1970 500L for sale in New York has been restored and is the perfect runabout for an urban dweller who seeks economy but wants a bit of flair to go along with it.

Small classics and microcars have gained big in the market over the last few years. Find a good Cinquecento and be prepared to spend a decent amount. Prices are averaging around $20,000 for a 500L in good running order. A restored example like this may bring closer to $25,000, however, more information on where the restoration was undertaken and an actual mileage figure would be nice.

1972 Fiat 130 Coupe

Fiat's rebirth in the United States with the 500 models and a partnership with Chrysler is a bit of a sad turn of events for the legendary company in my mind. True, it's great to see them back on U.S. shores, but when one considers some of the legendary Fiats that we've seen over their storied history, it's hard to get on board with the somewhat trendy but hardly classic new 500 and awful but strangely popular 500L. They've gone from a company tied to some of the most respected names in the automobile industry to making appliances for the masses. Where does an enthusiast turn for solace? One of my favorite Fiats has to be the handsome Pininfarina designed 130 Coupe:

It's hard to believe that the air conditioning works on this car considering some of the older Italian car's notoriety for nothing working at all. Yet, here is a pristine, claimed original condition 130 Coupe. It's just so pretty, so advanced for the time it looks like it could have been made a decade later. The 5-speed and solid color combination make this a particularly nice option. Asking price is a bit more than a fully optioned 500, but really, which would you rather have?
