1982 Fiat El Sabry 850

If the Fiat 850 is the Italian Volkswagen Beetle, then the Fiat El Sabry is the Italian Meyers Manx Dune Buggy. We are not entirely sure if El Sabry is a name claimed by any particular language, but our best guess is that it's a Spanish-Hebrew hybrid that translates to The Cactus. Dunes and cacti do overlap in a desert ecosystem, and the El Sabry, like the Dune Buggy, looks like it would be at home thrumming down sandy desert washboard.

Starting with the Fiat 850 chassis, suspension, and engine, G.A.M.C. Baldi created a fiberglass open-top four-seater. Over the years, only 80 of theses creations made it into production. Just like in the 850, power comes from an 843cc overhead valve 4-cylinder engine, likely producing 34hp. 850s were available in 34hp Normale tune, as well as in 37hp Super tune, so it's possible that some El Sabry's were specced with the 37hp engine.

How difficult are these to make street legal in the US? Seems like a very nice alternative to the relatively common Dune Buggy. The only downside might be having to explain to everyone at the gas station that it's Fiat-based, not VW-based.

Aside from the irreplaceable fiberglass bodywork, these beach cars shouldn't be terrible to keep in service. And, any damage to the fiberglass is theoretically quite simple to repair, if you know what you're doing. We like the idea of a rare, modernized Fiat Jolly at a fraction of the price. Someone import this orange specimen to Southern California where it belongs.

1970 Fiat 500 L Ragtop

Today's Fiat cinquecento ragtop serves to cleanse our collective palettes after yesterday's modern Fiat 500 Jolly conversion. Also, these photos - this is how you photograph a car for a for-sale listing! Great lighting, thoughtful framing, and the prudent inclusion of all of the views that a buyer might want to see in order to assess the car from afar. Well done, seller.

The 500 L model, introduced in 1967, is distinguishable from its 500 D fore-bearer by its front-hinged doors. Slightly less endearing, the door update no doubt aided in convenience. While this car lacks the tubular bumper extensions that distinguish an L from an F, the modernized interior, with its trapezoidal update to the formerly round binnacle gives away its status as an L. Chrome trim on the drip rails live up to the Lusso designation.

Up for sale is a real nice 1970 Fiat 500 ragtop in orange with black top. Many hours and money has been invested in this nice sport Italian car. This is a true collector’s car. Orange is actually a rare color to own. Very few made

One of the world’s finest attractive micro cars!

This car drives exceptionally well, you can take it to the car shows & for weekend cruises.Definitely gets a lot of attention & questions at the cars and coffee. The Fiat is powered by it’s 500cc engine, air cooled. It moves pretty quick! It has a 4 speed manual transmission. Engine Bay is well detailed. Has a nice exhaust that sounds really nice. Mechanically the car is sound! See the video.

The car did receive a restoration. The Body is straight as an arrow. All doors, trunk, hood are all aligned like they should. It has always been garage kept and well taken care. All the exterior chromes, trim, latches, bumperettes are in great shape. Underneath the floor pans are in great shape!

The Interior is splendid and contrast well to the exterior paint, black Italian upholstery has been fitted, and tastefully done, and overall condition looks new. Black roll-up top!

This car seems to be neatly restored. While we are generally impressed with the work, we will point out an abundance of silver spray pain on the engine components. We'd prefer to see some plated bolts instead of what seems to be paint sprayed over the bolt heads. This is not to say that the car isn't in great shape - the condition of this car, if as good is it's claimed to be, is rather remarkable at this price point.

We must say that, despite our limited knowledge of the Italian language, a certain word comes to mind: Arancino. Usually affiliated with arancini, the small, orange fried rice balls enjoyed in Sicily, the little orange moniker fits this little guy well. We hope you enjoy this great example of a Fiat 500 L in a rare color.

Fiat 500 Jolly Conversion

This was too good not to feature. It's not even really a car for sale on the new/used market, so much as it is a service offered by Jolly Car. Simply put, they convert the modern Fiat 500, introduced in 2007, into their updated interpretation of the original Fiat 500 Jolly. We would post more information from their website instead of reposting their advertisement from Car and Classic, but the website isn't all that informative.

Original Fiat 500 Jolly's, with the canvas canopy, doorless bodies, and wicker seats, are the domain of boat owners and those with oceanside villas. Even today, they average $50k for what amounts to a golf cart with excellent road manners. In this sense, especially in light of the inflated price of the modern version, nothing has changed!

The spiaggine

The spiaggine is an open styled car, intended primarily for use in summer months, often at tourist resorts. It is distinguished from other types of cars by the fact it has no doors, no roof, has a removable awning in place of the roof.. The interiors are made of water-resistant materials.

The birth of “spiaggina” type vehicles was immediately after the war by the initiative of some Italian coachbuilders who transformed mass production utility cars in order to make them suitable to the needs of wealthy clients, to suit their needs during the holiday period at seaside resorts.

The changes were made by request of the buyer varied and generally included the removal of the roof and replacing it with a tarp awning made of cotton, the installation of cloth or wicker seats and elimination of side and rear seats for better access.

The name "spiaggine" comes from one of the first cars of this type, the Savio spiaggine of 1958, built from a base Fiat 500 and designed by Mario Boano. This car, although it was built in only two copies, became famous around the world for being photographed with its owners, Gianni Agnelli and Aristotle Onassis. What probably contributed to the emergence of the term "spiaggine", the reference to the folding chair used in Italy at beach-side resort, since at the time of their presentation journalists likened this type of car to "beach furniture".

Since the second half of the 1950’s, several models of spiaggine were built in small series from the main Italian coachbuilders until the early nineties, including the body Moretti Turin that after the success of the 127 and 126 midimaxi created the only spiaggine wheel drive : the Moretti Panda Rock, produced up to December 1989.

With the final closure of all builders who worked and altered production Fiat chassis, the term "spiaggine" fell by the wayside because of the safety rules and regulations in Europe. But these cars are always admired by many fans and make record quotes from records in all auctions worldwide.

old Fiat 500 Jolly Ghia

The Ghia 500 Jolly is a spiaggine built by Ghia bodywork, 1957-1974.

Made on the mechanics of the Fiat 500 and later on the basis Autobianchi Giardiniera, was among the first projects of Sergio Sartorelli, just come to the technical direction of the Ghia, after the departure of Giovanni Savonuzzi.

The car was very expensive and was a cult object, scope and bought by many VIP’s like Aristotle Onassis, Yul Brynner, Enrico Berlinguer and Silvio Berlusconi, to be put on their yachts or for 'use as a "golf cart" as well as a way to get around their estates. Among the most famous owners also the artist and Ligurian painter Mario Berrino.

They were sold in the United States between 1958 and 1966 and in Italy and Europe until 1974.

The vehicles included protections on the sides and the windshield, as cover had simply an awning of protection for the sun (instead of a more classical hood) resting on a body of chrome pipes, the doors were totally absent and replaced by simple chains. The colors were available: pink, coral, white, pale yellow and sky blue. The mechanics had been the original Fiat with the classic air-cooled twin.

Gang, we can't tell you how to spend your money. We feature many cars that we could see spending our own money on. We don't foresee a future in which we are of the state of mind to buy a nearly $100k golf cart. If we do, though, you can bet that it will be in this lovely okra yellow color!

1975 G.A.M.C. Baldi Frog

Let's face it: the Fiat 500 is a bit large and unwieldy. Tough to sneak down city streets. Cumbersome. A hassle to park. While the basic components for a proper city car are present, Fiat missed the mark on convenient city driving.

Enter G.A.M.C. Baldi, coachbuilder of the Frog. Lopping 20 inches off of the standard Fiat 500 chassis and providing their own body, they have managed to realize what Fiat failed to accomplish. The resulting city car puts even a modern Smart ForTwo to shame in outside dimensions. Engine options ranged from 125cc to 595cc, this example being outfitted with the goldilocks 499cc Fiat unit. A 4-speed manual shifter sprouts from the floor - no antediluvian column shifting is required in the Frog.

The sellers of this Frog claim that the car has been restored. The engine bay, interior, and paint all seem to be in great condition. We wouldn't seat the mechanical condition too much, as the fundamental components and rebuild parts are all available just as they would be for a Fiat 500.

So, for those who already have a 500, but require something more modest for trips into town, we recommend the Frog. Where it lacks in style, it delivers in convenience. The 499cc Fiat power plant and 4-speed manual should make for some entertaining transportation in the lighter Frog body too. Hop to it.

2015 Fiat Ducato Clone

Here is something that we don't featured everyday: a Ram ProMaster van badge-engineered into a Fiat Ducato shop van. Following in the footsteps of Daimler and their Sprinter vans, FCA saw fit to bring the Fiat commercial van lineup to North America to meet the increased demand for the tall, European-style vans. In the North American market these vans were marketed under the Ram brand, but little differentiates the Ram vans from their Fiat cousins found in Europe.

What really solidifies the European credibility of this particular Ram ProMaster is the diesel engine. Branded EcoDiesel in North America, the Iveco unit produces a respectable 155hp and 300lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, this engine was only available in North America for a few short years, as diesels have fallen out of favor with North America, for a number of reasons.

This is 2015 Ram Promaster 2500 EcoDiesel and as many of you already know, it is really Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxter and Citroen Jumper in disguise. This model ( diesel ) more so as the engine and transmission in this configuration are available on Euro market, just as it is.

Also it is very hard to find stateside at this point, not many Diesel's around.
I have purchased this van with intention to make it a "shop" van, but plans have changed and van has to go. Van was purchased from insurance company, it has had minimal damage in the rear right corner, and to the rear axle ( dead axle this is FWD van ). We have replaced everything and no expense spared. All brand new stuff, except for rear axle, but that is just a solid piece of metal, so we got a used assembly from recycler. Wheels are new as well. Literally brand new assemblies with new rims and new tpms's. I have also installed brand new trailer hitch and factory wiring ( 4 and 7 plug ) and if needed, brake controller installation would be breeze, all is there.

As you can see in the pictures, van has been re-badged back to Fiat, I also have original grill with Abarth emblem. There is a set of Abarth stickers made for this van, and installed.
So, this van was one owner prior to me, sold new in Rhode Island at the end of 2015, to electrical contractor. Original cost was just under $49000. It was sold and maintained by Chrysler dealer. Current oil service is still good, for another 2-3000 miles, but I have full set of filters ( oil, fuel, air, cabin ) and oil to go with it. We purchased the van couple months ago, repaired the damage, had it inspected ( salvage inspection ), 4 wheel alignment was done, stickers removed, van was cleaned in and out. There is a partition behind the seats, I had it removed, but I still have it.

Van is ready to go, and ready to be registered, all paperwork is in order and buyer can count on 20 day temporary tag for the trip, if needed.

I have personally driven this van 4-5000 miles, just to make sure all is good.

We will provide, free, clear and transferable SALVAGE Rhode Island title WITH NEW HAMPSHIRE SALVAGE INSPECTION SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED.

What you see in the pictures is what you get, nothing more and nothing less.
Instead of writing long disclosures, common sense is expected, you win you own, and expected to pay. Swift transaction is essential, certified funds of course within 2-3 days.

AS IS sale. We will assist in any possible way.

Port of NJ / NY is about $400 delivery. We can help with shipping as well.

Aside from the Fiat Badges, Fiat front grille, and the Abarth decals, not much sets this van apart from the Ram on which it's based. For Italian car owners with the need for a shop van, that should be plenty. We must warn potential buyers that this example has a salvage title, although the seller reports that the minor damage was all repaired with proper attention to detail. Caveat Emptor applies, but we don't think that it's a dealbreaker - if the price reflects the damage, that is.

Italian car owners aren't always the most rational bunch. We ourselves are inexplicably drawn to this van, if only for the Abarth decals and Fiat badges. Is that so wrong? After all, it was surely engineered by Fiat in their Italian tech center. The badges are just a correction to reveal the truth behind the vans origins!

2016 Fiat 500e

Supposedly costing Sergio Marchionne's FCA $14,000 with each transaction, the Fiat 500e was FCA's concession to California, who required the sale of an electric car from all automakers wishing to sell in the state. As new, the 500e was priced at nearly $44,000, before tax incentives. Even taking the incentives into account, it would be surprising if any owners broke even, financially.

As with most modern Fiat models, keen buyers should look toward the used market, where deals abound. Our personal 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth was quite the deal at less than $9,000 for a fully-optioned sub-40k mile car with some warranty left on it. Similar deals can be found on these 500e's. At close to $10k, the 84k range from the 24 kWh battery pack starts to make more sense for those with reasonable commutes.

The car will reportedly charge to full battery in 4 hours when using 240V charging, though 120V charging requires a full day to top off the battery from empty. And, with the 111hp electric motor, drivers might not see the full 84 miles of range, as lead-footing it will surely reduce potential range. Acceleration numbers from the magazines are healthy enough, but the 88mph top speed might not cut it for some of you readers.

We like the light blue paint, and the eSport wheels on this example. The updated gauge cluster and infotainment system are welcome upgrades from our personal Abarth too. Will we trade our Abarth for one of these? That depends on a number of factors, but we won't count out the possibility. If we do, we'll find one just like this one, but with a moonroof!

2017 Fiat 500 Abarth

Today's post is another reader request, and makes a great follow-up to yesterday's Fiat 500L.  Our friend, the G-MAN, is fretting the end of his lease and needs to find his next daily driver in the coming months.  He's currently in an Italian-American product, the Dodge Challenger - would a 500 Abarth improve on that?

Our experience with the 500 Abarth has been largely positive.  Space hasn't been a concern for our two-person, two-dachshund household, and the rear seats are surprisingly comfortable for shuttling additional friends around town.  We even made a junkyard run in the runt yesterday, stuffing a large Mercedes-Benz 400E front sway bar in the rear seat area with some 72" brake lines that we were returning to the parts store.  Rear seats deletes are popular on the Abarths, but with the rear seats folded down, we don't see the need.

As far as reliability goes, our only complaint has been a leaky transmission seal, replaced under warranty.  We are nearing 60,000 miles with no further issues to speak of.  The trim and interior are generally holding up well, too.  We've heard that our experience might not be representative, which is why we are recommending this new model with a full warranty.

Unfortunately for Fiat, these cars were sold new for $5-10k more than what we think most folks were willing to pay for them.  We didn't become interested until the low-mileage used examples were a tick or two below $10,000, ourselves.  We think that this new model from last year is a smart way to get into the seat of fun daily driver - the discount off of MSRP is substantial, but the full balance of the warranty remains.  Good luck, G-MAN!

2014 Fiat 500L Trekking

No, we haven't been hacked!  We're wading into the controversial surf of tall wagons - in this case, a model with history rooted in the most polarizing tall wagon of them all: the Tipo 186 Multipla I.  Now, we are open to automotive designers challenging the status quo, especially when it comes to vehicle packaging.  In this area, the Multipla did not disappoint.  The way it reimagined the fundamental proportions of a 6-seater passenger is still very off-putting to many, but we prefer the risky design to the vanilla compact crossover SUVs clogging today's roads.

The 500L came onto the scene in 2012, replacing not on the Multipla, but also the Fiat Idea, as the 500L was offered in both 5 and 7-seater configurations.  While the design in less pioneering when it comes to proportions, the shape is by no means universally accepted, and the round headlights, especially in North American markets, win the car no favors.  We, on the other hand, are welcoming of the creative design and relieved to see some effort and risk from the Fiat design group.

The 1.4L turbocharged powertrain comes courtesy of the Fiat 500 Abarth, albeit without the raspy exhaust note.  Along the way, it picks up a 6-speed manual - an option we wish that our personal 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth had included.  The engine is boosted relatively aggressively, so do not expect modern levels of throttle response, but once on boil, the power is plenty acceptable.  We find the quality of interior trim assembly to be relatively lacking on our North American Fiat 500, but the Serbian-assembled 500L might benefit from better suppliers in that area.

When it comes down to it, we think that this 500L makes a great case as a tall wagon, with its spunky engine and manual transmission.  The panoramic moonroof and tall glass would make for a bright and airy cabin, and the interior room would be appreciated on long hauls.  FCA has infotainment down pretty well, although this vehicle was developed before Apple CarPlay, so temper your expectations somewhat.  We are fans of the green exterior and the unusual shape too.  We can see ourselves adding a low-mileage example such as this one to our fleet in the coming years, if only as a 'shop runner'.

1971 Fiat 500 – square headlights

We interrupt our scheduled Alfa Romeo sports sedan content to share this rare beauty/beast.  We are not, admittedly, experts of the Fiat 500, despite owning a modern Fiat 500 Abarth.  In our limited google-searching, we are absolutely unable to come up with a factory explanation for the quad front  headlight Fiat 500.  Looks to be custom work, but the seller describes it as special edition limited production.  If someone can vouch for that, we'd be happy to hear more.

We did some additional research, and it would seem that the car was either swapped from a 499cc up to the 595cc engine from a later car, or that the seller is optimistic.  We can't tell from looking at the engine.

As far as cheap 500s go, this is one of the better ones that we've seen.  Sure looks like a driver, at least once the fueling issue is solved.  We would even venture to say that the underside doesn't look especially rusty.  But, who know what lurks beneath the paint.  the interior is surprisingly complete, and stands to really clean up.

Look, under $3,000 is relatively short cash for a classic 500 these days.  The headlights - factory or otherwise - are a hoot, as is the Italianate branding down the center of the car.   This could be a great opportunity to buy an odd little 500 with a hot engine!

The Lada 1200 (VAZ 2101) is an Italian car much in the same way that the Ford Fiesta is a German car.  In need of a durable people’s car to handle harsh Soviet roads, Russian officials tested the best of the west and found the Fiat 124 (Car of the year, 1967!) to be the most suitable choice.  A deal was struck between the Soviets and Italians that resulted in a modified version of the 124 being engineered for the Soviet market.  To produce it, Fiat would design and construct a massive new factory along the Volga River in the newly created city of Tolyatti.  The new factory - the largest in Europe at the time - would go on to produce the facelifted version of the Soviet-Italian-mashup and contribute to the over 18 million vehicles sold (third only to the Volkswagen Beetle and Ford Model T) between the two generations'  40 year lifespan.  This facelifted version retained the same underlying mechanicals and updated the styling to the now-iconic square headlamp look. The Soviets also gave back to the Italian auto industry ,supplying, as part of the deal, tons of recycled steel. As the legend goes, many Italian cars of the 70s and 80s were constructed using this poor-quality Russian steel….it is left as an exercise to the reader to conclude the long-term effects this had on corrosion resistance.

The Fiat 124 and its Soviet clone are nearly identical.  Small visual cues like the bumper overriders, headlight bezels, and hubcaps distinguish the communist copy from its western original.  Major changes included a massive rear axle, massive drum brakes, and thicker steel. The pushrod engine of the 124 was scrapped in favor of a more modern Fiat-engineered overhead camshaft unit, supposedly originally intended for a small Fiat off-roader that never saw the light of day.

While the little Lada became the butt (Hehe, butt - Ed.) of jokes and cheap transport this side of the iron curtain, in its time it was considered top-of-the-line transportation affordable by most anyone.  This example comes in classic white with a red leather interior, and only 75k miles on the clock. At just $12,500, this classic Italian masterpiece by way of Russia is comparable to the German-American Fiesta in both its price and  its multicultural origins.  Too bad Ford never offered a bright red interior on the Fiesta!
