1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

Rivaling the Porsche 911 and Volkswagen Beetle for one of the longest production runs, the Alfa Romeo Spider went through a host of changes (as did the 911 and Beetle) over its nearly 30 years in production; from the classic and simple "Graduate" Duetto until the last of the run in 1993, the Spider was a classic pillar of Italian design, an underscore to the notion that Italian roadsters were front engine, rear drive cars with a manual gearbox - something that would disappear from Alfa Romeos until the 8C very recently. Of all of the Spiders, I like the original Duettos and the last of the run Spider Veloces the best. Sure, the body cladding isn't as clean as the original design, but the car looked updated and really showed how good that original design could still look in the 1990s. To me, it was the same way that the 1980s Porsche 911 Carrera channeled the cleaner original design. With modern conveniences like electric windows and air conditioning, the Spider was also updated to make it a more enjoyable car to drive when the weather was less than optimal. The Veloce was the top of the line model, with leather seating, a cloth top and 15" alloy wheels. This is one of the lower mile examples we've seen; I love the white over tan leather as a classic Alfa combination, and recent maintenance means there should be less for the new owner to do except drop the top and enjoy some classic Italian roadster smiles with a touch of modernity.

1969 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750

Though not the most prolific version of the 105/115 series coupes, the 1750 GTV shared the basic tenants that united the many versions; light weigh, great styling, and a super drivetrain. An instant classic, they managed to be as memorable as the Guiliettas they replaced, and certainly made the following chapter all the more difficult for the Alfetta. Today's example is beautiful if somewhat untraditional Vivid Verde, sporting a older restoration but also a heat transplant:

Beautiful restoration about 10 years ago returning this Bertone-bodied coupe back to its factory original green - "Vivid Verde." Parts were re-plated as necessary. All weather stripping was replaced, all glass is original. Interior was completely redone in beautiful black leather that looks - and smells - phenomenal. New carpets, new headliner, new dash board, rebuilt instruments all make the interior better than new. Note that the odometer was reset to zero when the car was rebuilt, original miles are unknown. Seatbelts are Schroth competition-style 4-point belts (http://www.schrothracing.com/competition), original belts Klippan belt are included and can be easily installed if preferred. Center console is custom made to emulate the earlier GTA-style and covered in leather as well. Transmission was rebuilt with new synchros and lightened gears by Merrit (http://www.speedquest.com/my/gearlightning/index.html) and shifts quickly and perfectly. Engine is a 2 liter motor from a 1989 Alfa Spider including the excellent Bosch fuel injection. The battery was relocated to the trunk both to accommodate the FI system and better weight distribution. The custom cold-air air intake box is made of polished stainless and covers a K&N filter. The original 1750 motor is included with the sale as well as the original dash, wheels, hub caps, springs etc. New exhaust system with GTA end pipe was installed at that time as well. Koni adjustable shocks and Performance springs all around. Radiator was rebuilt. Brakes have been changed to a single brake booster arrangement. Car is pictured with "daily" floor mats that protect the perfect carpet, show-condition floor mats with the Alfa logo are included. Windshield washer pump is not installed but it is included.

This is a ten-year-old restoration and the car has a few minor imperfections, but it has been garage kept and very well cared for. It shows very, vey well. There are few minor scratches on the rims and the windshield. There is a small crack in the paint next to the driver's door handle as shown in the photos. It has been shown at Concorso Italiano in Monterey for many years. It starts instantly, runs excellent, drives like only a well-sorted Alfa can. Steering is precise and brakes are excellent. Tires will need replacing soon.

Personally, I'm a fan of the build; I like the updated engine package in the classically designed coupe. I did a very similar swap in my Audi GT, updating the engine for a more headache-free running condition. It worked while simultaneously making the car a better performer; my guess is this package is quite similar. Value has been a little flat on these GTVs over the past few years, but still a top condition 1969 would set you back around $50,000. This car loses some of that value with the older restoration and heart swap, but I'd estimate at $28,000 to $32,000 this car would be well bought.

1966 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider

A few weeks back, I looked at a 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider, one of the prettier and more Ferrari-like designs to come out of Milan. Decidedly un-Ferrari-like is the price of these vintage Alfas, which despite their elegant Touring-designed coachwork don't generally come within even a tenth of the value of most of the mid 1960s Ferrari crowd these days. For that money, you're decidedly getting one of the better looking and lesser known Italian roadsters ever produced. Today, there is a near mirror-copy of the earlier 1963 model for sale on Ebay; this time, it's a 1966 but nearly everything else is the same!

As Alfa's all-new flagship line, the 2600 marked the end of the Italian company's long-standing tradition of producing four-cylinder cars. Offered as a Spider, four-door Berlina, or a two-door Sprint, the 2600 was available to customers in three very distinctive body styles. The all-alloy 2.6 liter inline six-cylinder engine, like its predecessors, made use of dual-overhead camshafts. Less than 2,300 2600 Spiders were ever produced.

Presented here is a highly coveted late production example featuring 5spd manual transmission and disc brakes all around. As driver's quality Spider, this car displays older cosmetics, with recently serviced mechanicals making it the perfect candidate for spirited driving.

Exhibiting a nice patina throughout with typical blemishing and imperfections on the paint (pictured), it appears this 2600 remains largely correct in Red paintwork over a Black cabin and convertible top. The majority of brightwork and all side-glass are untouched as is the dash and several underlying components. The car's numbers-matching alloy 2.6 liter twin-cam, with its freshly rebuilt triple Solex carbs is incredibly well mannered and very responsive. A recent complete tune-up also addressed new rubbers, cooling and intake hoses, clamps, spark plugs, fluids, clutch and brake master + slave cylinders, brake lines and rebuilt calipers, battery, ignition components and more. Its broad torque band and the 2600's inherently balanced characteristics easily tackle the most challenging roads.

Great for tours, rallies and continued use as-is, the Spider is accompanied by a vintage 2600 Shop Manual, 2600 Tech manual, servicing receipts and catalog.

While condition on this car looks close to the earlier example, pricing is significantly less at $30,000 less than the earlier car. For that money, you also get a few less miles than the earlier example. While this car exhibits more patina than the 1963, personally I'd accept that for the hefty discount and to be comfortable taking it for a drive. After all, what use is the car if you can get out and enjoy it? This is a lovely car and a neat (and affordable) alternative to the Ferrari crowd!

Just because it's a rare Italian car that's fun to drive doesn't mean that it has to break the budget; the Alfa Romeo GTV has long been one of the best options if you want a good looking, great handling and practical (well, by Italian standards) GT car. Capable of carrying four in comfort, the Alfa Romeo GT is a good looking GT that has always reminded me a little of a Italian combination of the Audi GT and Volkswagen GTi - that may sound unflattering, but park a GTV and Audi GT together and you'll recognize a lot of the same lines; add in hatchback practicality and you've got quite the combination. While most people are interested in that memorable, throaty and sonorous GTV6, I like the simplicity of the earlier 4-cylinder models:

1976 ALFA ROMEO GTV COUPE

This car is shockingly clean, and lovely in unusual to see white. I love the Alfa decal on the hood, the cutout "GTV" which was later replaced by plastic, even the lack of the typical chrome badges on the rear is great to me. This is certainly one of the best GTVs I've seen recently; the seller must think so, too, since the asking price is just over double the current top condition value for a GTV. Hagerty pegs condition 1 cars just below $12,000 - while this car is certainly one of the best out there, I struggle to see how it's worth double that amount. At $25,000, there are a few other cars I'd select first, but it's lovely to see!

1978 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Giardiniera

It's interesting how some cars come about. Most are designed by committee, others are the result of a lone group of engineers working in their spare time to create something special for enthusiasts. Others, like this Alfa Romeo Alfasud, came about by government policy. The "sud" suffix is Italian for south, the region of Italy where Alfa Romeo and partner Finmeccanica manufactured the vehicle. With a flat four engine and styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, this was one of Alfa Romeo's most successful models, with over one million examples sold including the later Sprint versions. Rarely seen in the US, this Giardiniera version gives users a bit more space with a square back. Having undergone a complete restoration, this could arguably be the best, if not only, Alfasud Giardiniera on these shores.

My first new car ever was a 1972 Alfasud 1.2 in grigio (grey) with rosso (red) Skai (Vinyl) interior. I loved it. Unfortunately my then-girlfriend destroyed it on the German Autobahn a couple of years later. Ever since, I wanted another one and moving to the USA in 1985 did not make it any easier. To complicate it even more, this time I wanted a Giardiniera, a Wagon, and it could not be red or white. After searching for many years, I succeeded and found this wagon in 2003 in Northern Italy. My friend in Germany, who owns a well known restoration shop, Klassik Garage in Bad Saulgau picked it up for me and took it to his shop for a careful evaluation.

Being an Alfa Romeo it had to have some rust and even though it was in fantastic shape for an Alfasud it did have some. Thank goodness, the rear hatch was in excellent shape, but the Sud needed fenders, rocker panels and rear quarters. By then we decided to do a COMPLETE restoration. Let me give you the details:

Body:
Stripped down to bare metal, installed OEM front fenders, remanufactured rear quarter panels and welded body panels where necessary. Complete repaint outside, partially inside and underneath in factory color "bruno cilento".

Engine:
There were a few 1.5 liter Boxer engines in the USA and before Alfa Romeo left the US market in 1995 they were converted from solid lifters to hydraulic lifters. I could never find out why these engines were here. I found my engine advertised on the Alfa Romeo BB in Florida. A gentleman wanted to use it in an ultra light plane, but never finished the installation, because unfortunately he passed away.

We shipped it to Germany, changed the timing belts, water pump, spark plugs and installed it. Right now it has about 600 miles. It has two Dellorto carburetors. Since they don't have a choke, it's very temperamental when cold. It has been sitting for a while in my storage and I noticed that the carburetors are not completely synchronized at less than half throttle. Once you open up completely, they are perfect and the car "goes like stink." The sound is perfect too. A new muffler was installed and it has very nice dual tailpipes.

Transmission:
We found a brand new Alfasud TI 5 speed on display at a German traffic school, bought it and installed it. Unfortunately it lasted only 20 kilometers and disintegrated after that. Luckily there was an Alfa specialist close by who had a good used TI 5 speed in stock and this one was installed. It shifts perfectly without any grinding or noises.

Interior:
We located a new, correct Series 2 dashboard and installed it. The seats were in tan Vinyl, which I really disliked. An Italian upholstery shop had some OEM Alfa Romeo cloth in orange and black, which was used in GTVs and Montreals. We had it shipped and the seats were re-upholstered in orange/black which really compliments the color "bruno cilento" perfectly.

The door panels were also covered in black Vinyl and orange cloth, but they were already warped when I got the car. I am enclosing a set of "better" door panels. The roof liner is original and in good shape. The car has the original rubber floor, which shows some wear especially on the passenger side. It also has a set of period correct Italian rubber floor mats.

After a six year restoration the car was shipped from Bremerhaven to Port Hueneme and imported with all the paperwork into the USA. Since it's a 1978 no EPA or DOT conversions were required. We displayed it at the Concorso Italiano in Monterey 2011 and a lot of people complimented the car. It is the only Alfasud Giardiniera in the USA and very few are left in the rest of the world. I am certain that this is one of the best ones in existence.

It has a 1978 Washington YOM (year of manufacture) plate which does not need renewal ever. Since it is over 25 years old, it's also smog exempt.

You don't see many Alfasuds around these days, even in Europe. Many examples fell victim to rust, leaving them in a state beyond repair. A quick scan of some classifieds in Europe reveal some clean, low mileage Alfasuds for sale between the $5,000 to $10,000 USD mark. A car like this is a hard one to value stateside, but there are certainly a few rabid Alfa fans out there who may drive up the bids.

These 1980s Alfas are not the simplest vehicles to maintain, but if you're handy with a wrench and have the time to invest or know a good specialist and are willing to invest the money, they can be a unique practical classic, for those needing a bit more space than a sports car. Those considering a Milano in good condition can expect to pay in the range of $4,500 to $7,000 these days, representing a lot of Italian flair for not much cash.

1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Touring

The past few years have witnessed many of the popular convertibles and roadsters from the 1960s on an upwards pricing spiral. Where once you could perhaps consider classic Porsche cabriolet ownership, for most mortals the idea of forking over well in excess of $100,000 for a clean original 911 and close to $150,000 or more for a 356 is just over the top. W113 Mercedes-Benz SLs, also once a solid value that could be had for well under $50,000, have also pushed upwards so that now you're looking at $60,000 plus for a clean, restored example. 1963 ALFA ROMEO 2600 SPIDER

KURT TANNER RESTORATIONS offers for sale, here on Ebay, for your consideration an exceptionally nice 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider with coachwork by Touring. There were only 2255 examples of these elegant Grand Tourers produced worldwide. This vehicle offered here has a completely original rustfree and accident-free body (amazingly!), and was a California-delivered car from new. It was cosmetically restored approximately 6 years ago and is still presenting extremely well.
Details of the restoration include complete removal of all items such as chromework, glass, interior trim, rubber, etc. The vehicle then underwent a stripdown of the entire underchassis and exterior body panels by shot-blasting, followed by full show-quality bodywork and paint to very high standards. All the body panels display exceptional fit and finish to the car's main body, with beautiful shut lines as original.
The undercarriage was re-undercoated back to original specifications. All chromework/ stainless was replated/ polished and re-installed with new rubber, along with a new windshield and door glass. The complete interior was retrimmed in black. Original style rubber floormats were fitted to the car's interior as well as the trunk with the correct Touring logos. A new, quality, black cloth top was fitted. The steering wheel, dashboard, and instruments all appear in very nice original condition.
The car's mechanicals are in fine fettle. The engine starts easily from cold. Once warmed up and driving along the road, oil pressure registers 55psi at 2500 RPM. There are no unusual noises and the car revs well, with a smooth and quiet exhaust note. It is fitted with the original and rebuilt set of triple Solex sidedraft carburetors. The steering, suspension, and brakes all behave properly. The gearbox shifts very well with no noticeable wear on any of the syncros. The driveline appears to have been detailed during it's restoration as well. It is a very nice car going along the road at speed, effortlessly and quietly cruising in 5th gear...
This vehicle for sale here offers a relatively affordable entry into 60's Italian motoring in an open sportscar. It is presented in the quintessential Alfa Romeo colors, and it's low production ensures that it will be a sound investment in the years to come. For anyone that's undertaken a full restoration on a car of this generation, unless you had some devote connection to an unrestored car this is the way to do it - buy one that's done. At $99,000, this car is priced right at the top of the current valuation curve for a condition 1 car, and it should be. It's gorgeous, showing the impressively crisp and yet flowing lines that Carrozzeria Touring created. Squint a bit, and you've got yourself a Ferrari, and frankly most non-enthusiasts (and some poorly informed enthusiasts) would probably think this was a Ferrari at first sight. It's that pretty, and considering where some of the other classic models of the era have gone in pricing, it's a downright deal. It may seem expensive now, but I'd expect we'll see this car's value go up 50-100% over the next decade if the trends continue. They're a rare, very pretty, great sounding Italian roadster, and this one is fully restored and in near perfect condition - could you ask for anything more?

When you think of the quintessential Italian roadster, more than likely one car comes to mind: the Alfa Romeo Spider. Fortunately, there four generations of the 105/115 Series Spider to choose from that span four decades. There must have been something in the air in 1967, because it seems that the whole world changed overnight. It was everywhere; in music, theater, social mores, political unrest, technology and, of course, automobiles. The height of the muscle car era was in swing and the Summer of Love was soon to start. Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo introduced its spectacular Duetto Spider and it was noticed by everyone who followed automobile design.
The car features a sharp, razor-like nose, glass-covered headlights, a classic scallop running down the side and a boat-like taper at the rear. It looked sleek, sexy and Italian in every way. Interiors were pure sports car, but luxurious enough to keep the driver comfortable during longer trips. Instrumentation was excellent and the overall feel of the car superb. Driving it was pure fun due to its nimbleness and ease of control.

Duettos are some of the most valuable of the 105/115 Series Spiders, and this example is no exception. The aftermarket alloy wheels may not be to everyone's taste, but I've seen Minilite style rims on Spiders before and I find the look to be rather fetching. The asking price here is right on the money, considering good Duettos are now reaching well into the $30,000 territory. At this price, you'll be getting not only a style icon but a classic that you can use without guilt.

1985 Alfa Romeo 6 2.5 Turbo Diesel

Mention Alfa Romeo and turbodiesel next to each other and you could be forgiven for thinking this was an odd marriage. Or a marriage that never even existed at all. Before their recent JTD models, Alfa dabbled with oil burners back in the 1980s with their large saloon, the Alfa 6. Not sold in the US market, this sedan was based on a stretched Alfetta platform and offered a VM built five cylinder turbodiesel engine. It wasn’t a barnstormer, but brought Alfa into the game at a time when ever increasing petrol prices were putting the squeeze on European consumers. Want to have something no one else does stateside? This is a 1985 model. eBay will not accept a European VIN for anything newer than 1980.

I love and collect cars; mainly Mercedes Benz and Audis, but I always had a weak spot for unique Alfa Romeos. The Alfa Sei (6) was Alfa Romeo's flagship luxury car, built between 1979 and 1985. Until 1982 only with a carburated 2.5 liter V6 and from 1983 until 1985 as the face-lifted 2nd series with a carburated 2.0 or fuel-injected 2.5 liter V6. Additionally Alfa Romeo built 2730 Alfa 6s with the VM Inline 5 cylinder Turbodiesel with 107 hp and 205 Nm torque @ 2400 rpm. They only came equipped with a 5 speed transmission. Mine has VIN 3699. After that only 31 more TDs were built plus a couple of limited editions with the light blue leather interior.

Alfa Romeo had a few 1979 models certified for the USA, but gave up the plan of importing them. Only very few Alfa 6s were privately imported and as far as I know there is no other Turbodiesel in the country. I had my eye on an Alfa 6 for many years and finally in 2005 while vacationing in Germany I saw this one advertised in Rome, Italy. I had to act fast and with the help of my German friend we had it shipped up to his shop in Southern Germany. It stayed there for a couple of years, received a complete maintenance with new tires and a couple of panels had to be painted because the paint had faded.

Eventually it was shipped to the USA and titled on a collector plate in Washington State. Since it is a Diesel and smog exempt in most, if not all states, it can even be registered in California. Odometer has only 5 digits and shows 05215 kilometers. Judging from the condition and tightness of the car it could be 105215 kilometers. That's also what the previous Italian owner told us. I do not have any paperwork to proof it.

The mostly original paint is still very shiny with a few touched up areas mainly on the trunk. Living most of its life in Rome, Italy it has a few small dings and the rear bumper is pushed in a bit. The interior is very clean without rips or stains. There is very little surface rust forming on a inside rocker panel and around the rear window which is visible on two of the pictures. It has not gotten any worse since 2005 even though the car was sitting outside in Germany. There is absolutely no rust underneath the car.

Even after sitting for a few weeks the car starts effortlessly on the first try. The transmission shifts without any grinding and the clutch is firm and not slipping. The brakes are good without any pulsating. Tires have approx. 4.000 kilometers. The car has a very firm and stable ride and can easily keep up with the 85 mph traffic on LA's freeways.

All lights and instruments work fine. Even the clock shows the proper time. It takes the tachometer a few minutes of driving before it starts working. The two front power windows work fine, the left rear is very slow and I never could get the right rear to work. The power antenna goes up and down properly but the old stereo does not want to play anymore.

The A/C was charged with R12 4 years ago and still blows ice cold, but because the cabin fan quit, cold air only comes in while the car is driving and the vents are open. I will include a spare fan and that should solve this problem. We took the car to the Concorso Italiano in Monterey in 2010 and had a blast driving it up there. The fuel mileage was about 33mpg. We did not have any problems with the car on this and many more trips.

Lots of people looked at our car and very seasoned Alfisti told us that they never saw one before. Even the Alfa Romeo museum in Arese does not have a Turbodiesel in their collection. Parts can be found in Europe, mainly in Italy. The VM engine was also used in Jeeps, Landrovers and Chrysler Minivans in Europe. I will include a repair manual in German. The car has a clean transferable WA title and a WA collector plate.

Even in Europe, the 6 is a rare Alfa. I've never seen one on my travels there. Most buyers of the marque tend to lean towards the sportier offerings and bypass the luxury sedans, especially one with a diesel engine. But, imagine the looks at the next Alfa meet when you turn up in this thing. If the Peugeot 505 or Saab 9000 seem a bit too common, your car has arrived.

What is the price of celebrity? Always an interesting question when it comes to collector vehicles. By now we’ve either seen or read the reviews of “The Wolf of Wall Street,” a take by famed director Martin Scorsese on the fast times of the world of high finance in the 1980s. "Trying to Fix" means "if parts are immediately available" (these are all minor, relatively inexpensive repairs/parts fortunately). Basically, 99% of the car is mint....the above 1% are simple fixes, general wear-and-tear stuff for New York City year 'round, garaged cars.

If this were any normal Series 3 Spider, we’d be looking at a $10,000 to $15,000 car here, given the condition. Is star power worth more than double in this case, then? That’s debatable, given this isn’t the first time this car has appeared in an online auction. It certainly would be interesting to see where this would go with no reserve. Given this car appeared in a movie regarding the investment world, maybe it's worth taking a risk over the normal value for a slice of movie history?
