We've always found diesel engines to be a great way to desecrate the Alfa Romeo experience. Take away the music, the power, and the high-strung tension of moving the needle up to redline, and you've subdued the spirit of an Alfa.

But, a 164 is not a typical Alfa in the way that it moves down the road. It has a large footprint, a considerable curb weight, and FWD, for one thing. And though the 164 screams with the 24V Busso, it does have a Germanic heftiness to it - a solid feeling that would benefit from the drama-free torque of a diesel powertrain. We think the 164 driver would especially enjoy the diesel on the autobahn, where low engine speed at high vehicle speeds makes for a calmer experience.

The car comes from the private collection of a former Alfa dealer in the Netherlands, Rinsma in Berlikum. He always carefully maintained his vehicles. Real enthusiast car lover and only 2 previous owners. Clean inside and out with all history and service books. It had been in storage for 9 years until we acquired it. First of all and most variable is the US port of entry, second is the purchase price of the vehicle(because some fees are based on the price) and third is the available ship and the port it will leave from. Ballpark will be between $2000 and $3000.
Good news is we will always work with the buyer to find him the best deal. For example, we recently sold a car to a buyer in Seattle, but Tacoma is one of the most expensive US ports. We offered him an alternative to Benicia in the bay area, all in this saved him $1200! He got a plane ticket for $150 and drove the car home on less than 2 tanks of gas....

A vehicle that is still registered to drive in the Netherlands is going to be in safe, drivable shape, given the stridency of their testing standards. Rust isn't tolerated, nor are leaks and loose suspension joints. So, the mechanical condition is likely nearly perfect on this example. We like the way it looks in the photographs too - nicely preserved. The VM Motori, once ubiquitous in Europe, will be more difficult to source parts for in the US, but with international shipping and online vendors, it shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

The price on this thing is the big appeal. Tack on $1,500 or so to get it imported and it's still a solid deal. Forget the high mileage - it has a durable diesel powertrain and a galvanized body. Get this thing on a boat and prepare yourself to enjoy those plush cloth seats!
