The Alfa Romeo 164 lacks racing history. It isn't a sports car. It has considerable Swedish provenance. And yet, if we were to recommend a single Alfa Romeo model to someone seeking to experience the Alfa Romeo brand, it would be the 164 - the 164S in particular.
Competence in curves, great gear ratios in the 5-speed manual gearbox, and a fat power band that is rewarding no matter where the tach needle is pointed all combine for a sports sedan with undeniable Alfa Romeo DNA. The styling is of an era, but above all, it is intentional and deliberate like a true Alfa Romeo.

The 164 S features a higher compression V6 than the base models, delivering slightly more power without resorting to dual overhead camshafts. The benefit here is in both ease and cost of engine service, since the S model lacks the coil-on-plug ignition of the later 24V models, and has a simpler timing belt system. This particular model shows a very clean engine bay, and while the 164 is know for its excellent rust-proofing, a California car such as this example should be very clean underneath.
Between the red paint, the sport model exterior add-ons, and the unfamiliar (to most) manufacturer, this 164 S is sure to draw plenty of comments at the gas pump. It's quick enough to dust almost an (stock) Alfa Romeo to come before it, and it's a joy to drive. If you're looking to experience the Alfa Romeo brand, and don't need the wind in your hair or an older classic in the garage, this 164S is a great point of entry.
