The Alfa Romeo Spider was getting long in the tooth even before the Mazda Miata crashed the scene in 1989. While the Miata offered a glimpse into the world of 1990s automotive styling, the Series 3 Spider was moored to its mid-60s origins, with little more than bumpers, taillights, and minor bodywork to distinguish it from earlier models. Little surprise, then, that the Miata glided right past the Spider and replaced it in North America.
Today's example comes from the makers of Corsa steel wheels, another fitting ode to the past. In the past 15 years, the clean look of a well-proportioned steel wheel has become just as acceptable to many enthusiasts as the alloy wheels that were offered as upgrades from the factory. A good example of this is the use of Volkswagen Corrado steelies on many MK1 and MK2 Volkswagens. Corsa seems to have decided that this trend will stick around, and offer what seem to be thoughtfully sized steel wheels for a number of cool enthusiast cars. We have no affiliation with the brand whatsoever, but thought that the anochronistic steel wheels fit the throwback Spider theme pretty well.

The Spider seems to be in fairly presentable condition, with just some minor paint fading noted by the seller. The refreshed suspension will be great for ride quality and steering feel, though we wonder how stiff the sport suspension will make the ride. Alfas tend to be pretty softly sprung from the factory, so we find that the sport suspensions firm them up to what feels like a very reasonable level of stiffness. Certain trim items on the later Spiders could be difficult to source, but we have a feeling that keeping this on the road is as simple as a quick call to Centerline every year to stock up on maintenance items.
It's heartening to see how well Spider owners usually take car of their cars. A classic weekend car, Spiders normally see a level of attention that is rare to find in the leagues of sports sedans and hot hatches out there. And for that reason, so many of them are still on the road and unleashed onto the road during the weekend during warmer months - or in California, all year long. You'll need to spend some money to hang with a Miata on the track, but for weekend errands, a Spider would be tough to beat.
